    Bad design for pet hair

Purchased 11.29.21. It is now 3.22.22 and I can no longer use this machine. This is the 3rd Dyson vacuum I've had since 2006. Until this unit, I would've highly recommended anything from this brand. First one lasted 10 years. Bought another, the top-of-the-line Animal Ball in 2016. It still works fine, it's just heavy. I have two floors in my home so I bought this lighter "animal" version during Black Friday so I could use it on my bottom level, and dedicate the heavy one to the top floor. I have one long haired dog, one short haired cat. A couple of months into using this unit there started to be a smell of burnt hair. I kept checking the rollers, trying to find the source, but they'd be completely cleaned off and still creating the smell. I finally found a youtube video explaining where to disassemble the head unit to get to the problem and sure enough, there is a gap on the side of the rollers that allows hair to enter and collect underneath them and underneath the rotating pegs that turn them. By the time it smells burnt, the damage is done and there's no coming back. I cleaned everything out really well again but the plastic was starting to melt under the pegs, creating a slightly larger and more "snaggy" space for hair to collect even more easily. I emailed dyson about the problem and they sent me an entirely new head assembly under warranty. I've had that new assembly for approximately 6 weeks. I clean the rollers constantly (at least 2x per use!!) to try to prevent any further issue, but unfortunately, unless you unscrew everything every single time you use it, you just can't get it all cleaned out from UNDER THE ROLLERS. Two days ago, the burnt hair smell was there again and I've got the same exact issue. There is no way to repair this long term... it's BAD DESIGN. Unfortunately, thus far my attempts to get a resolution from Dyson have netted nothing. I can't get my money back and I can't even get them to provide a credit toward the heavier upgraded model, since I know that one works for us. I'm beyond disappointed. This is completely ridiculous. If you have pets, don't buy this one. You won't be able to use it.

Hi there, this is David with Dyson. I'm happy to hear how much you've enjoyed all of your previous Dyson machines. We certainly appreciate this being your third Dyson vacuum. However, I'm sorry to hear of the trouble you've experienced with your Dyson Ball Animal upright machine. It would be worth noting that regular routine maintenance of the cleaner head is highly recommended, especially with pets, to help ensure optimal performance from your unit. We'd also recommend removing the brush bar when cleaning the cleaner head, to ensure there is no buildup forming in between the parts of the head which would not otherwise be visible from the outside. It's worth noting that physically taking the cleaner head apart past removing the brush bars is not recommended, as this can void your guarantee. We would definitely be keen to learn more about your experience, and provide you with support, as what you're describing is certainly not the experience we expect you to have as a Dyson owner. Please consider emailing us directly at [email protected].

      Best wishes,

      David

I have had nothing but problems with this vacuum. I bought it because it is a Dyson, after the first year it was clogging and burning. Next the one roller stopped working. We are constantly taking it apart and fixing it! Such an expensive product with little runway.

Effortless Clean with Lots of Features!

I own one of the Dyson Digital Slim models, which I've used for a year and love it. I have a small home, and it's hard to get through all the furniture and toys we have in our living areas. I was worried that the full-sized Animal would just be too big to use effectively. I was wrong! Not only does the "ball" design make it easy to glide in and out of the small spaces that need vacuumed regularly in our home, the vacuum itself doesn't take up much more space than the slim model, both in use and in storage. The suction power is unbelievable, and the large canister size means I can do the whole house (dust from our farm and pet hair and all) without having to dump it until finished. While I prefer cordless models as a rule, this vacuum has a very long cord that can reach across my small home without having to unplug and find a new outlet. Wrapping it up isn't much of a chore, as the cord holder actually accommodates such a long cord (unlike other vacuums.) This vacuum is rather loud, especially with the brush motor engaged. Because it takes just one pass to get the job done, however, I really don't mind. This model came with lots of accessories, some of which I'm not sure how I will use. Assembling it was kind of tricky, as it only comes with picture instructions, and I'm not very good at visualizing things. One other feature that could be good -- or bad -- is that there is no step button to push to lay the vacuum down to use (as opposed to leaving it upright to use the attachments). You simply pull back and use the vacuum's own weight to engage it into the recline position. Might be more difficult for an older person to do. Also, you have to pick it up to move it, instead of just pulling back and rolling it on the back two wheels like other more traditional models. This may be tricky for someone who can't carry things, even with the vacuum being rather light. I think this easily trumps the other vacuums we've used over the years. I already know that Dyson has an excellent customer service team, great warranty, and will help you out with any of your questions (learned from other vacuums I own from them), so this is a good value when you consider craftsmanship and support. I'd pay more to get a great company that stands behind their products. I did receive the Dyson - Ball Animal Bagless Upright Vacuum in exchange for my review. All opinions though are my own.

Pros: Best suction of any vacuum we have ever used. Good turning radius and maneuverability. HEPA filter and easy waste-bin dumping Long durable cord and lots of attachments Carpet and wood/tile floor mode Cons: Heavy - battery option is much lighter but wouldn't be enough for us Upright positioning is hard to force into position Expensive (even on sale) Cleaning the canister slightly difficult because of some angles Overall: Would buy again if on Sale or go with HEPA option of cheaper vacuum.

The cylinder comes off all the time particularly when putting the cleaner in the upright position or in the down position the dirty splits on the floor. It seems the latch isn't strong enough to stay locked in place. now the clear plastic piece on the bottom of the cylinder has a hair line crack. I don't have the box anymore is it too late to return this to a store? Is there a solution? Sick of cleaning dirt up from the cylinder coming off and spilling on the floor. Is there a particular way to lock the cylinder in place?

    Must Have Cleaning Tool

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

With four young children and a black lab/golden retriever mix pup, we know messes at our house. If I don't vacuum every couple of days, tiny hair balls start following us around the house. Walking on crumbs is going to happen regardless. I wasn't sure what to except when I opened the box of the Dyson Ball Animal Bagless Upright Vacuum, but I was kind of hoping for a miracle. Not that it would vacuum on it's own, although that would be amazing, but that it would actually pick up the dirt and dog hair easily. Impressed with how easy it was to assemble out of the box, I plugged it in and held my breath as I went for the stairs. I did have to figure out exactly which tool to use, but the suction was strong and it's so light I was easily able to carrying it up the stairs as I went. Even my children have been excited to help clean up! It easily goes between carpets and hardwood floors. If you're in the market for a vacuum and have carpet, hardwoods, hairy pets, children, or just want an awesome vacuum, the Dyson - Ball Animal Bagless Upright Vacuum is for you. I did receive the Dyson - Ball Animal Bagless Upright Vacuum in exchange for my review. All opinions though are my own.

    These Just Keep Getting Better

If you have a good amount of carpet in your home, and especially if you have pets, this Dyson Ball Animal is indispensable. My husband and I have dust allergies so this vacuum helps us breath easy. The amount of dirt it catches, even if we don’t wear shoes in the house AND vacuum regularly, is crazy! You do have to assemble the Dyson Ball Animal but it literally takes only two minutes (I actually timed it). Previous to this, we had an older canister version. We loved it but this updated upright has much stronger suction and is easier to store in a small space. The accessories are so handy and the pet brush does wonders on our dog’s bed. The Dyson Ball Animal glides smoothly across carpet and it’s easy to maneuver around furniture. There is a feature to turn off the rotating brush for vacuuming on hard floors such as wood and laminate. The only thing that would make this vacuum more perfect is a retractable cord (the main feature I miss from my canister one)! Disclosure: I received a product for review. All opinions are my own.

    An Amazing Vacuum

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am still in awe of how amazing this vacuum is. This vacuum cleans up everything our family leaves behind from dirt to hair. When I first did a quick pass in what I thought was a clean living room and kitchen, I was shocked to see how much microscopic dirt it picked up. The new attachments are wonderful for our stairs and cleaning our ceiling fans. I no longer have to break my back lugging a vacuum cleaning up and down the stairs as the nozzle will stretch the entire length of our carpeted stairs. The new Animal is a bit larger than our old Standard Dyson which makes it harder to bring up and down stairs, that would be my only negative that I would say about it. Luckily we own two Dyson Vacuums and that won't be a problem for us any longer. Having had a Dyson in the past I know that the durability of this brand can not be beat and that it is worth every cent. While I was sent a Dyson in exchange for my review, all opinions are 100% mine.

First of all I want to thank Dyson for creating a wonderful product that is durable and can keep up with my household. I recently welcomed a cute little furball into the mix and my goodness how he acts like a little tot. He gets into E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G! I came home from work one day and there was paper and fuzz all over the bedroom floor. No idea where he got this from. I was amazed at how much this Dyson Ball was able to hold and suck up from the carpet. Not only did it pick up all the paper, but it cleaned and pulled dirt that was stuck in the carpet from my other vacuum before. I am a Dyson believer and cannot wait to see what future messes I can clean up with it :)

    2nd Dyson I bought in 8 years

I have gone through many vacuums over the years. Here is the honest truth. I bought my Dyson DC41 in 2012, still working good however it’s held together now with zip ties. The plastic broke on the canister and hoses, the only thing it works for now is the floors as the hoses have come apart over the years. I have two dogs and a cat and my wife vacuums every day. This Dyson is still working excellent even after 8 years of daily use. I Baugh a Oreck vacuum, works okay, I hate the bags and the smell and doesn’t even compare to how nice the Dyson makes your carpet look after vacuuming, did I mention how expensive the bags are. So I decided to buy another Dyson, same model as the DC41 Anmial but now is just called Dyson Anmial. This is the best vacuum I have ever used, plus Dyson did some updates and this new one is a must better design. I love how easy it is to clean and your will never get any foul smells from the Dyson. I wish I never bought the Oreck, and bought this Dyson on sale for 249, excellent price. Thank you BestBuy

I finally decided to buy the Dyson Animal when it was offered as a Best Buy Deal of the day & I'm so happy I did. Ironically it rained the night before I received it, after taking my dog out I had to vacuum with my old vacuum so I didn't plan the before & after test. Was amazed at how much the Dyson picked up, particularly since there was no traffic on the carpet after the night before. It is heavier than I'd anticipated but its so easy to push around it feels like way less of a workout than my old vacuum. Will say (no matter what a Dyson rep might dispute lol) when emptying the canister just pushing the button is not sufficient, I always must reach in to get the hair. I do not let it get overfull, clumped hair just doesn't fall out. This isn't an issue for me as I'm happy to see how much it gets & also in the canister instead of the rollers on the bottom of the machine. Overall very pleased with the unit, came with more attachments than I realized, makes vacuuming a breeze & certainly can't beat the price I got it for.

Ive had a Dyson for 10 years and it was time for a new one. I grabbed an amazing sale for a new animal hair cleanup model. The suction is amazing. Ita a powerful machine. The surprise here was that you needed to put the pieces of the vacuum together. Its pretty heavy but as far as vacuum cleaners go, they are among tbe top of the line. The vacuum normally sells for $499 but i grabbed it for $299 aa Dyson is ready to introduce a brand new model. As ling as this Dyson continues to do sn amazing job,i dont need a newer model with a much higher price point. I am happy with my ourchase

I have owned Hoover and Sharks and this is my first Dyson. What I love - the suction is noticeably different so much that my carpet feels warm after it leaves a spot. I love going from carpet to hard wood to laminate with no issues. Also the cord is super long which is great. The spinning attachment for cleaning couches etc. is amazing. Also It’s so easy to remove the brush to remove hair wrapped around the bristles. Now what I think needs improvement- first the cord needs to be retractable, second the hose itself is very stiff which is challenging to use when attaching tools for use. Last the mechanism that is in place that locks the vacuum in an upright position or allows it to reckon to vacuuming position is annoying. It unlocks easily And frustrates me when moving the vacuum. Other than that I love it and would buy it again knowing all of this.

Best Vacuum Out There - Minus a Few Kinks

This vacuum has the strongest suction power in all my years of using other brands like Bissell, DirtDevil, and Eureka! This monster deep cleans pretty much every carpet fiber and the external tools are awesome. The vacuum works so that when it is upright, the suction is redirected to the detachable pipe. The ball technology is very smooth but the transition from going upright to vacuuming is not easy and makes loud, scratchy sounds, which is disappointing in a vacuum this expensive. Also, a cord rewind would have been a nice added touch. Nevertheless, this vacuum works fabulously and gets the job done better than most others. Oh, and this one actually doesn't lose suction power, unlike those other brands who make false claims. (My new Eureka vacuum died after one month of usage and my DirtDevil vacuum lost suction in 6 months).

Great vacuum - I know right. Who thinks of a vacuum like that. I didn't until I get this one. I did not care about vacuum as long as it was working. Well mine broke so I had to get a new and this makes the other one I had seem like it never worked. This really pulls up a lot of animal hair that I thought I was getting with my other one. I did think these were just hype but it lives up to the hype and then some. Super easy to use and it gives you all the tools you need and super long cord. Was thinking that the big housing was going to be difficult to maneuver, it not at all.

My Dyson satisfaction is rapidly declining

This is my 3rd Dyson. I loved, loved, loved the first Dyson. Figured I would never get a different brand. 4 years ago I was moving and my machine had just started not turning off. I had to unplug, in order to turn off. I thought new house, new vacumn, it had given me 7+ years of service. I bought a Dyson, without roller ball, for my new home. It was harder to use and I decided I would go back to the roller ball when this one stopped working correctly. It performed ok, but I did think it was harder to handle. At 3 and a half years the hose broke. The way you need to hold the hose, bent, when using attachments caused the hose to crack open. I duct taped it so I could continue to use. I decided to get a new ball vacumn. I purchased this one and am totally disappointed. It is nothing like the first one I had. The canister that collects the dirt and animal hair, is impossible to empty without sticking my hand up into the hair to pull it out. Disgusting. When I use the tool to vacumn the tile floor in the kitchen, it is not designed properly. It goes in every direction except the one you want it to go. I can tell the hose will be splitting gut like the last one, as the awkward way you need to hold it to vacumn. The actual suction is great and the floor gets clean. It is just to difficult to use. For the price of a dyson, you expect quality. Not the case anymore.

Hi Susan, this is Krystal with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on the Dyson Ball Animal Upright. I am pleased to hear that you are satisfied with how well the suction is. The Dyson Ball series is one of our top performing uprights.

I am sorry to hear of the difficulty with maneuvering the machine. The vacuum's key components have been engineered to fit inside the ball itself. This gives the machine a streamlined profile, allowing access to tight spaces and lowering its center of gravity to make it lighter in the hand.

As for the canister, it is recommended to empty the canister before the debris goes over the MAX line indicated on the canister. If not, it can cause a build up of debris along the top. In the event this occurs, the canister can be separated from the cyclone for easier cleaning.

We would value the opportunity to address any questions or concerns you have and want to ensure your machine is running as intended. Please contact us at [email protected], include your name and contact information, and we will be glad to assist. We look forward to hearing from you.
