Powerful handheld vacuum but some limitations
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I currently own a Dyson upright and also a Dyson canister vac, along with the Dyson hairdryer. So I'm definitely a fan of Dyson. I was excited to try out one of their handheld cordless vacs to see how they stacked up. The quality of the machine and it's packaging does not disappoint. It feels solid and everything snaps together easily and securely. Setup was easy and took about 5 minutes to un-box everything, peel labels and put it together. I have used this machine several times and it does a great job with bare floors and low pile carpets. It's terrific for stairs and getting up in the corners by the ceiling. I haven't had the chance yet but I imagine this would be perfect for cleaning out the car. The brush head turns by the force of the suction, so it's not powered. The issue there is that you can't turn it off to do hardwood floors. Unlike my canister Dyson that has an air diverter switch to stop the brush from spinning, this one spins non-stop. Dyson makes an attachment that has a brush specifically for hardwoods but like most Dyson products, it's not cheap. For those with thick, plush carpeting, this will not work well on those types of carpet. I tested it and the brush head would stop spinning immediately when it hit the thick carpet. The other limitation I found is in battery life. With the battery fully charged, I was able to get about 8 minutes of cleaning on average before it died. This was on the Max Suction setting. The regular setting got me about 15 minutes on average. So it's really built for spot cleaning or easier cleaning of the stairs and bathrooms where it might be tough to get a big vacuum, not cleaning the whole house. You're not going to replace your household vacuum with this but it is a typical Dyson, meaning it's high quality with lots of power. If you are looking for something that is simple and easy to use, that you can grab quickly if there's a mess or use to clean the car and furniture, this is perfect. So it does have value as a supplement to your household vacuum and I would recommend it to others. I give it one star off because of the inability to stop the brush head from spinning, but otherwise it's a great handheld.

You do have to pull upwards on the red latch, sometimes sharply when you first get the machine. The cord free machines are made from polycarbonate ABS - the same material used in riot shields and crash helmets. They are tough, so we subject them to hours of testing, including drop and impact tests. The battery only lasts about 8 minutes when using high power. Not enough time to vacuum one room. Also, the large cleaning head brush stops spinning so frequently, that I get frustrated and switch to my good, old Oreck plug-in. I purchased this vacuum based on reviews and the convenience of cord free. I've been underwhelmed to say the least. If I could exchange this for a different brand, believe me I would. I spent too much money for this to be a piece of crap! Signed, Disappointed Dyson Owner.

The Dyson V8 Animal features two suction modes; MAX and standard. Please keep in mind that the V8 offers plenty of suction on normal power to effectively clean your floors because of the motorized brush bar. MAX power is really only needed for tough cleaning jobs, including larger debris. If you're noticing that the brush bar stops spinning while vacuuming carpeting or area rugs, that can be due to the sensor inside of the brush motor, which is designed to stop the brush from spinning if too much tension is felt on the motor.

I am pleased to hear you are satisfied with the performance and quality. The Dyson range of cordless vacuum cleaners has a battery-enhancing trigger. Battery power is only on when the trigger is pushed – this means that the battery is only used for cleaning, and is not wasted when moving from room to room, or moving around obstacles.
Also, as advertised, the Dyson V8 gets 7 minutes in MAX mode for tougher jobs. 25 minutes in standard mode with the motorized cleaner head attached and 30 minutes with the soft roller cleanerhead or mini motorized tool attached. 40 minutes for any other tool. Worked great until it didn’t…

Not good for rugs

I can confirm that due to the suction of this machine, as well as the floor tool providing an airtight seal between the floor underneath, you may find items like unfixed, smaller rugs difficult to vacuum with some of our machines. The brush bar is also designed to stop spinning if the bristles sense your flooring as an obstruction. The brush bar motor will stop, to prevent the motor from overheating. Sure, it fits in many spaces but it doesn’t mean it can clean these spaces. Battery is quickly dying, the charging storage base is a small fight to engage properly and the suction is nowhere near my lesser priced Miele Not even close

I knew Dyson wouldn't disappoint, I have been using thier vacuum for a long time. All the different attachments that come included is always a plus. Your able to have to modes for the power which will help save the battery. I was so excited to use it, just note when you first unbox it, it is recommended to fully charge before use which took a few hours. The included wall mount is a nice addition allowing you to store your Dyson away nice and compact. Another plus is it's not a heavy vacuum it's easy to maneuver. In true Dyson fashion all the attachments are easily able to attach and detach. Emptying the canister with out having to touch it another Dyson plus. I recommend this as a quick clean up vacuum only because the canister isn't big like on the regular vacuum's. Always happy with Dyson performance.

We chose a light-touch trigger over an on/off switch to ensure that battery life is never wasted by letting the machine run when it's not in active use.

"Animal" Variant can't pick up cat food bare floor

Terrible for a 400 dollar vacuum. I understand I'd have a better experience with the fluffy tool on bare floors but an additional 150 dollars when I had a Hoover Lynx for 120 dollars that performed better is ridiculous.

Battery power is only used when the trigger is pushed – it is not wasted when moving from room to room, or moving around obstacles. All of our cordless units do come switched on to MAX mode out of the box, otherwise, when not set to MAX mode, a full charge gives 40 minutes of fade free power or 30 minutes when using the motorized floor tool.
