Aesthetically, this thing is pretty nice! Though I must say the shaft of the vacuum has a strange texture/feel to me. For me, it's like dragging nails down a chalkboard; yes, I did get goosebumps when I picked it up to attach it to the motor. I let it charge about 24 hours, as that's when I got to interact with it after unboxing. It's not too loud on High suck and on Max suck it gets louder and breezier and grabs the rug more. I vacuum 'my rooms' -- and know what it took with my Kenmore canister & takes with my Shark upright. It seemed like I had to keep going over the same spot to get the cat litter that gets tracked out onto the carpet, then I'd go back & get some more, which made me less than thrilled. Like I mentioned, kicking it to Max suck made it grab the carpet even more - seemingly getting more out and I wasn't sure how it was doing until I lifted the latch, dropped the bucket and saw the disaster that went into the trash! Jeeeze, how I was living in this filth?! I found that my trigger finger was getting a bit tired and found myself looking for a lock for the trigger - which isn't there. After roughly 10 minutes of use (and feeling somewhat accomplished for 2300 on a Tuesday night) and plopping it into the charger, showed it was down to 1 blue light. I guess 15-minute stretches is all both your finger & the vac can handle. Now, I went to see where I could mount the dock - and before I did, I noticed that the stairs attachment & the Mini Soft Dusting Brush (with the bristles) are not able to be cleanly hooked onto the dock as they protrude backward towards the wall too much - FYI. The crevice tool & combination tool are what you'd hook in. The dock is slick don't get me wrong, and the that you hook the existing adapter into the dock to charge the vac (and there is no give), is slick. All that being said, the price tag is likely too high for my personal consideration; I was given this to review. $150-200 less and I'd consider pitching it to friends and family, otherwise, if they're asking and willing to fork over the green, I'll recommend it -- given my personal caveats, of course.

The Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum is our second Dyson stick vacuum purchase and we can't say enough positive things about it. It is lightweight, easy to maneuver, has very strong suction, power, and is easy to take directly to the trash and empty the debris bin. Here is when you can easily see the smallest of particles removed from carpet and floors. I can't imagine maintaining our home in pristine condition. We use a cleaning service now only every 3 weeks versus every 2 weeks as in the past, and so it pays for itself.

    The ideal vacuum

Even though it is small and light, this vacuum is really powerful and versatile enough to take the place of a full-sized upright, if you don't mind dumping it often. And you will dump it often. It pulls up more dirt than you'd expect, and it has a pretty small capacity. This thing really picks up pet hair. I'm surprised by how much it can pull out of a rug, and the upholstery attachment actually pulls dog hair from my microfiber couch. There's two settings, normal and MAX. The normal setting works great in general. When you switch it to MAX, it can pick up big messes, like a pile of sawdust. It felt pretty foreign when I was first putting it together, but with patience and following the illustrations in the instructions, I was able to assemble it and use it right away. Well, they do recommend charging it before the first use, and it needs it. It took a little practice to get used to the amount of force needed to eject the dust collector, but now it's really simple. Like I said, it doesn't have much capacity, and since it's so effective, you'll be dumping it very often. One weird thing. The connector for the charging cable is on the back surface of the handle. The air in my house is really dry this time of year, so I get minor shocks when my skin contacts the charging port on the vacuum. Otherwise, it's a great vacuum. It can replace my other upright, since I think its convenience is worth having to dump it often.

Hello Natasha, this is Kelly with Dyson. We're sorry that you've found the V8 Animal to be so disappointing, in your use. We know that battery run time is a very important aspect of performance for our owners, so we developed a trigger that helps maximize the amount of time you can clean on one charge. We chose a light-touch trigger over an on/off switch to ensure that battery life is never wasted by letting the machine run when it's not in active use.

Your vacuum will come with standard and Max power modes. In Max power run time will be up to 7 minutes, and in standard power, you can expect run times of up to 30-40 minutes depending on which tool or attachments you are using. Having a shorter run time does sound unusual, and we'd value the opportunity to go over your machine with you.

Hello Melissa, this is Kelly with Dyson. We're sorry to hear that you've been so unhappy with your Dyson V8 Animal. Your vacuum will come with standard and Max power modes. Our cordless models also have a run-time enhancing light touch trigger which ensures battery power is only used when the trigger is pushed. The total run time will be up to 40 minutes. In Max power run time will be up to 7 minutes, and in standard power, you can expect run times of up to 30-40 minutes depending on which tool or attachments you are using.

The Dyson V8 Animal features a direct-drive cleaner head, with gentle carbon fiber bristles safe for any flooring type, but powerful enough to pick up debris from both bare floors and carpets. While the machine will offer less run time in MAX power mode, most households find standard power sufficient for everyday messes. Dyson Animal variants come equipped with a mini motorized head which is designed to pick up pet hair from furniture and stairs. You can also use this tool with the machine in MAX power for optimum pick-up, if you find that standard power is leaving pet hair behind.

I put it together in 5 minutes or less, charged it and couldn't wait to try it out. I have a Dyson cordless motorhead, you know the fuschia and silver one and that is a great vacuum. I did have a couple issues with it though that the V8 has remedied. Dust balls would get wound up in the filter and the sliding release was difficult to maneuver and then I had to reach my fingers up and grab the dirt to remove it. The filter has been improved! Now I just pull the lever up and the filter rises and the bottom opens dumping the dirt. Anything stuck can be easily removed. The motor is now bigger and somewhat heavier which makes it more powerful for better sucking action. The motorized head is also bigger but still very easy to maneuver. The charge lasts longer (not a whole lot, but longer is better so I can get more done on a charge) AND it is now so much QUIETER! I like the the gray and blue color and mine came with enough attachments to get the job done. Easy to maneuver, great suction, and pretty too. It's a workhorse.

If you are reading this, you might be wondering if this vacuum is worth it. I do the same thing, and for a large purchase, I do even more research. Knowing this, I'll give you the info you will want to know, to make an informed decision. Dyson products are not cheap junky products. Dyson makes the best of the best, and they are the products others try to emulate, and fail. The differences between this and the V6 Animal, are many. And I think they are significant enough to warrant spending the extra money. The most important features of this are (1) a long battery run time, (2) a much more thorough and effective cleaning of the dust cup and dust screen when emptying the dirt/dust, (3) a larger motor with more suction, (4) a hepa filter, (5) the motorized attachments. This is worth the money, and I work vacuums really hard, with a big hairy dog that sheds all day and all night. It has plenty of run time to do a decent cleaning without worrying about running out of battery. The motorized floor attachment and the motorized smaller upholstery tool keeps getting up hair and dirt, but without getting hair wrapped around the attachment. It is some kind of a carbon fiber material - this is great, not always removing hair from the roller in the attachment. But, if you do have to clean it, it is easy. Dyson has made significant improvements to this model, vs. the V6 animal unit. It has a 2 way dust brush, crevice tool, powered floor tool, powered upholstery tool, and a long run battery. The HEPA filter means alot if you own dogs or cats, to prevent dust and dander from making its way back into the air. A big wish for this would be a headlight, so you can see what you are missing when you are vacuuming. Other than that, I can say that there is really nothing I'd change or hope for that isn't already built into this model. Do note this takes 5 hours to charge, at the most, but also runs alot longer than the V6 animal - worth it to be able to keep cleaning and frankly no issue because you will have been able to clean so well you won't need it again for awhile, thus the 5 hours is no biggie. As with any Dyson product, it comes well packaged and boxed, and the unit provides a very nice user experience; not a single technical issue and no problems that I can see with this. I don't expect there will be any, but if there are, it does have a 2 year warranty. Thanks Dyson, for a well engineered product, I'm hoping this lasts as long as I think it will, based on my initial observations.

Caring for new wood and tile floors in my newly renovated home was my goal in ordering it. I had never spent this much money on a vacuum sweeper. This vacuum has very, very poor suction. Emptying the very small dirt collection receptacle is extremely cumbersome, if not nearly impossible. I am going to return it to the store after buying it online for our new home. It is completely unsatisfactory in performance and mechanics.

Hello Rose, this is Kelly with Dyson. I'm sorry to hear of the very unusual problem you've experienced with the release mechanism on your Dyson V8 Animal. I'm happy to inform you that Dyson V8 Animal features a hygienic dirt ejector, which drives out dirt and debris in one action. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4ylPsW9e8k

The bin of your V8 Animal will have a MAX fill line to indicate when it is full and time to empty. We generally will recommend emptying your bin by at least the top MAX line that the bin has. I'm also happy to inform you that the clear portion of your bin may be removed for optional maintenance, if desired.

I understand that you have initiated the return for your unit, however we would value the opportunity to learn more about your experience. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected]. We look forward to your correspondence.

I loved it! It was lightweight, worked great & fit under my furniture too, which was a nice added bonus. The extra features were fantastic too, like the washable filter, swivel head & being able to change it around for floors, stairs & walls. The roller was easy to clean as well. However, something went wrong with the charging port so I had to take it in for a warranty exchange. I opted for a corded vacuum because I wasn't a fan of the short run time all cordless models have, but I would have been happy to take another home if they had it in stock!

I live in an apartment of about 750 sq ft, and use this as my primary vacuum. It is perfect for it! I can let it charge in a closet so it is out of the way, and I don't have to worry about uncovering outlets from behind furniture to get to the entire place. The listed specs for the battery charging and use time appear to be accurate. The max power setting is good for about 7-10 minutes, which is all I need for my small place. The fact that it is cordless also means that I can vacuum out my car without issue, despite being parked in a parking garage without any outlets. I haven't had occasion to test the extended use setting. As for the suction power, I am using this to replace a Roomba (pet edition as well), and am very pleased that I can go over the same space as the Roomba just did, and get more dust and such out of the carpet. The attachments are also very nice, and everything clicks into place very easily. This vacuum really does seem to be well designed. Hopefully it'll last!
