Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. We're sorry to learn that you felt like the V8 Cordless was lacking in power. Your Dyson V8™ cordless offers two powerful suction modes - regular and MAX. MAX provides a boost of suction for larger debris or more stubborn messes. We understand that you've decided to return your purchase. If there's anything else we can help with, please get in touch with us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Worst vacuum I've ever had. Battery lasts 15 minutes max. Have to speed vacuum to get done before the battery dies because it then has to charge at least a few hours till you can use it again. Never again Dyson, never again cordless. $400 down the drain!

Leaves the competition in their dust, literally!

The Dyson V8 Cord-Free Hand Held Vacuum leaves the competition in their dust, literally! The Dyson V8 Animal Vacuum is in a league of it's own; and is second to none other than itself. I was excited to finally get a chance to see what all the Dyson hype was about, and boy did I see why. The rumors are true; Dyson is a BEAST in the vacuum industry. I actually only needed one day of usage to provide my feedback, but thought it was best to utilize the vacuum to it’s max capacity over a few days before providing feedback. I am a first time buyer and user of any Dyson product. I’ve owned several top-brand vacuums in the past and could not understand why people were willing to pay 10 times as much for the Dyson when (in my opinion at the time) it did what all the other vacuums on the market did/do. I see now that I was only fooling myself. On day one, when I first opened the Dyson V8 Animal Cord-free Vacuum box I came to appreciate the perfectly premium packaging that made good use of the space while still protecting the unit. When I began to take the items out of it’s packaging I noticed that the unit and the attachments did not have any scratches and I believe it is safe to assume the box had been thrown around during delivery, yet the shipping had no affect on my vacuum or the attachments. I also quickly noticed how lite in weight each attachment was. Even the main unit felt lite and easy to grab hold to. I was happy that the unit was shipped with about 20% charging, but I still needed to wait an additional five hours to ensure it was fully changed. However, once the vacuum was fully charged, it took me less than 15 seconds to attach the assessor I wanted to begin with first. I set out to run the battery down to zero as I was concerned about the available cordless power between charges. I didn’t think the 7 (max power/turbo), or the 25-40 minutes (standard power) would be enough for me to complete all of the vacuuming I needed to do. Again, I was wrong. When set to normal power usage, I was able to vacuum all of the rooms in my house, and when I say all the rooms I mean the living room, family room, dinning room, kitchen, two bathrooms, gym/office, and stairs and I still had power remaining. I then thoroughly vacuumed out my car (floor mats and all). It’s great because you can just keep vacuuming without stopping to adjust for height as you can just keep vacuuming over multiple surfaces. It works well on many surfaces (rubber mats in gym, ceramic tile, carpet, hardwood floors, rugs, and car mats. I even used this Beast of a machine (DYSON Hand-held Vacuum) to get in tight crevices on my sliding patio doors and wooden shutters. I was able to reach almost any area and angle in house, which included on the side of the fridge, between the cabinets, on the side of the China drawer, underneath the bed, between and underneath the car seats and behind the toilet and all the house vents. The fully interchangeable attachment accessories add many combinations that allow you to get to just about any area quickly, and with ease. They Dyson V8 is an enemy to spiders and their webs as it sucks them away quickly and doesn’t leave a trace of their existence. Finally, just as I finished my last car floor mat, the vacuum stopped. My car floor mats look like new as if they were detailed. I was able to get a little more than 40 minutes of use as well. At first I wasn’t a fan of using the trigger, but I realized often times I had to stop to move an item or do something else and it was easy to just remove my finger, which stopped the motor, and saved the battery from running when it was not in use. However, nothing is perfect and without flaws or issues. I did find that using the vacuum on turbo makes the unit get hot very quickly. I also found that holding the tripper for long extended periods I would begin to experience some trigger fatigue. Although the battery did last me past the 40-minute claim, I found myself feeling distraught that it can take up to 5 or 6 hours for a full charge. I did discover that old habits die hard. With previous vacuums I had to vacuum an area twice, a practice that I got used to as I would move the vacuum up one area/section and then back across the same area to be sure it was clean. However, this is not necessary with the Dyson V8. I realized that after one stroke, the area was clean. It evens gets dirt and dust you can't see with the common eye. I’d vacuum an area that looked clean but then notice something (dust/dirt/lint) in the canister that collects the dirt. I found that the clever pull and then push design to empty the trash was very convenient and easy to use. This is the perfect vacuum for easy daily use for small and large jobs. Vacuuming no longer feels like a chore that I regret to do. All of the Dyson hype is correct, earned and deserved. The pros clearly outweigh the cons. If you can afford it, it’s a no brainer. The amount of money I spent on the previous four vacuums was in vein, this Dyson is an all-in-one vacuum that will last for years to come. Dyson leaves the competition in their dust, literally! Needless to say, I gave my other vacuums (upright and hand-held) away as I will no longer have use of them now that I have my very on Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum. This is a five-star vacuum!

Powerful handheld vacuum but some limitations

I currently own a Dyson upright and also a Dyson canister vac, along with the Dyson hairdryer. So I'm definitely a fan of Dyson. I was excited to try out one of their handheld cordless vacs to see how they stacked up. The quality of the machine and it's packaging does not disappoint. It feels solid and everything snaps together easily and securely. Setup was easy and took about 5 minutes to un-box everything, peel labels and put it together. I have used this machine several times and it does a great job with bare floors and low pile carpets. It's terrific for stairs and getting up in the corners by the ceiling. I haven't had the chance yet but I imagine this would be perfect for cleaning out the car. The brush head turns by the force of the suction, so it's not powered. The issue there is that you can't turn it off to do hardwood floors. Unlike my canister Dyson that has an air diverter switch to stop the brush from spinning, this one spins non-stop. Dyson makes an attachment that has a brush specifically for hardwoods but like most Dyson products, it's not cheap. For those with thick, plush carpeting, this will not work well on those types of carpet. I tested it and the brush head would stop spinning immediately when it hit the thick carpet. The other limitation I found is in battery life. With the battery fully charged, I was able to get about 8 minutes of cleaning on average before it died. This was on the Max Suction setting. The regular setting got me about 15 minutes on average. So it's really built for spot cleaning or easier cleaning of the stairs and bathrooms where it might be tough to get a big vacuum, not cleaning the whole house. You're not going to replace your household vacuum with this but it is a typical Dyson, meaning it's high quality with lots of power. If you are looking for something that is simple and easy to use, that you can grab quickly if there's a mess or use to clean the car and furniture, this is perfect. So it does have value as a supplement to your household vacuum and I would recommend it to others. I give it one star off because of the inability to stop the brush head from spinning, but otherwise it's a great handheld.

Hi Ralph, this is Kelly with Dyson. We're sorry to hear that after just one week of usage, you have begun to experience a drop in suction from your V8 Animal. This does sound rather unusual, and this isn't the type of performance we would expect to see. A drop of suction can result from a filter that is clogged and needs to be washed - which would be unexpected after one week of use - unless you're vacuuming up a large amount of dust, powder-like substances or pet hair. It sounds like you may have something blocking the pathway of airflow in your machine, which is causing this issue. We would be more than happy to go over your V8 with you, to help make sure it's performing as intended. Please contact us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com and it will be our pleasure to provide troubleshooting assistance.
