Really love this vacuum. So much easier to do daily cleaning with a small child running around making messes. 4 stars only because I wish it came with more storage for the many parts. Ended up purchasing a wall unit to hold all of the additional extensions it comes with.

Bought the Dyson animal v8 with the extended battery life. Let it charge overnight before first use. The battery lasts for 5 minutes, if that. Have contacted Dyson twice regarding the dead battery ( dead because the box sat on the shelf at Best Buy for a couple years per Dyson tech support). They promised to ship a replacement and it’s been two weeks since. Best Buy needs to backup the products they sell and should have already replaced the batt on Dyson’s behalf.

The V8 is advertised to get 7 minutes in MAX mode for tougher jobs. 25 minutes in standard mode with the motorized cleaner head attached and 30 minutes with the soft roller cleanerhead or mini motorized tool attached. 40 minutes for any other tool.

The way everyone talks about Dyson, I was expecting this thing to really impress me. My old Shark vacuum actually picks up more dirt and hair left on the area rugs. To my dismay the wife will end up keeping it because it's really light.

The Dyson v8 animal is a step up from the v6 model with some slight upgrades. This vacuum is a must for anyone who owns pets or even a business that may deal with pet grooming. Lets figure out if this is the right set up for your everyday needs. First off this is a stick style set up which also comes with a few attachments and easily breaks down for those hard to reach places and for ease of cleaning. Right out of the box comes everything you need to get your set up going. This product is designed to mount to the wall and comes equipped with only one battery pack. 5 hours of charge time is recommend before you start and Dyson claims about 45 minutes of run time. At first that's kinda of a hefty charge time for such a short amount of run time but Dyson claims that's adequate time for an average size house. On a personal level i own a 3500 sq. ft. house and i can honestly say the amount of time was more then enough and i never ran into any real issues. The main reason this is adequate is due to the fact that you have a pistol grip handle with a trigger on/off button so no constant run time, and you also are given a MAX button on top of the vacuum head for those stubborn pet hairs or deeply rooted food particles. Believe me when i say there is definitely a huge difference in suction power when you hit the MAX button. Not only does the sound increase but it will actually lift the carpet up so caution is necessary for those more expensive carpeted floors. I want to talk about something technical for a minute. The Dyson uses a direct drive set up for the head which is a feature that allows quality and suction power. So what does this mean exactly? Well on my cheaper vacuum cleaners that i own they are belt driven. Basically what this means is over time the belt will wear down and start to become loose similar to a Tee shirt that gets pulled on. What happens is as the belt becomes loose tension is lost and therefore suction power is lost with it. This means you can no longer dive deep into the carpet to grab debris that has rested deep in the base. Dyson eliminates this by using a direct drive set up. Basically all you need to know is there is no belt drive because it uses geared teeth meshing with other geared teeth similar to the cogs of a clock. Anyways what this means is your suction power should stay constant through the life of the vacuum spelling quality and power for years to come. I have two long hair dogs and the vacuum had no issue pulling up dog hair. But i wanted to really see was how this would stand up against a stress test. I have a friend who owns a dog grooming place so i spent the day there and allowed them to use the vacuum with all the attachments given to see how well it would perform and how long before the vacuum would die. First off the the attachments helped break down the vacuum and make it smaller and more portable to make it a lot easier to clean the dog kennels. One thing i noticed right away is how easily it cleans on hard surfaces. Not once did i need to use the MAX button. I did start to notice some minor set backs, although nothing too off putting i did notice the bag would need quite a bit of emptying, since it is portable it does not offer much in the place of waste storage. Now this is a bag-less set up so it was not much of a big deal. Simple hold the canister over the trash, release the trap door and bam your all ready to go. It emptied all the dog hair quite easily without me having to stick my hand in there and pull out any excess hair that did not empty out. Another thing i noticed was that by the end of the day the brushes were beginning to get some of the longer dog hair stuck on the brushes. Now this is designed for animals so it was a minimal amount, but luckily Dyson kept this in mind and allowed for a very easily removable brush head so you can wash it out. Simply turn the side slotted screw and the head comes out for ease of cleaning. Also one thing i forgot to mention but is pretty much a given is that since this is meant for animal hair the vacuum does come equipped with a hepa filter helping to eliminate those pet and dander allergies. Over all the vacuum held up better then i expected and battery life didn't run out till almost closing time which was a 10 hour day. 45 minutes of run time did not seem to be as big of an issue as i was expecting. All in all this is a truly impressive cordless stick style vacuum that can be used from everyday household cleaning all the way down to vacuuming out your personal vehicle from any dirt or hair you have acquired. At the end of the day the only few complaints i have is the small waste storage and 45 min run time. However this is not enough to take away from its awesome performance and mobility. If you do not own any pets then i would suggest maybe going with the v6 series but if you own at least one long haired animal then this is a must. You are going to want suction power that will last for years to come. pros: -Light weight -MAX power suction -Cordless rechargeable wall mount -Direct drive head technology -Breaks down for better mobility and hard to reach places -Easy to remove brush head -Designed with pets in mind Cons: -45 minute run time -Small waste container -Initial 5 hour charge time for first use

the good: • suction - fantastic suction for a handheld, rivaling some full sized vacuums I would imagine (probably not quite a full sized dyson, but certainly some entry to mid priced options) • accessories - abundance of accessories to match your needs, either as a handheld (small / short wand or smaller roller brush) or as a pseudo full size (long tube, wider roller brush) • weight - at 6lbs, very light and easy to move around. • noise - has 2 suction modes, a high and a low. at low mode (still enough suction for most jobs) it is very quiet. even at high mode it’s not quite as loud as my old hand held, with significantly more suction. • easy to clean - the suction assembly pulls upward and the base flap pops open, making for easy cleaning. a turn of the little blue knob on top of the suction assembly pulls the filter out. • long battery life - rated at 30-40 minutes, plenty of time for a handheld (small to medium jobs). for larger homes / areas, a full sized model will still likely be the vacuuming foundation, but this is still a great addition either for convenience or for those spots that are tough to get with a corded vaccuum • hanging wall charger - easy to mount (screws and anchors included) and wall charger fits into the hanger the bad: • flap on bottom - until you get used to it, the bottom flap opening can inadvertently dump a bit of debris out of your intended drop zone, i.e. beside the trash instead of in it. pulling up on the little red flap pulls the entire suction assembly upward, and at the top of the pull, the bottom flap pops open. long story short, clean this vacuum directly over the trash can. • no trigger lock - a lock to set the trigger on would’ve been a nice touch. while i didn’t find this to be an issue personally(it is a relatively light press of the trigger that activates the vacuum), my wife didn’t care for it. miscellaneous: • when used as a handheld, this vacuum is very powerful and capable. when used with the full sized attachments, maybe just slightly less, but still serviceable in my opinion. still plenty of suction for cleaning medium sized areas quite well. the weight distribution (all in the upper part as opposed to on the floor, as in typical full sized vacuums) takes some getting used to. • capacity - not exactly small, but for those who maybe have larger dogs with long hair or something similar, they may find that the bin fills up pretty quickly because of the suction power. overall: not exactly a replacement for a full sized vacuum, certainly for a deeper cleaning of the worst messes, but none the less, a very good hand held with tons of suction that can convincingly substitute for a full sized vacuum for most jobs. my one complaint with it personally would be the price point, but then this particular brand has always been a bit on the steep side.

Hello Nick, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for your review. I'm happy to hear that in your use thus far, you've been so pleased with how flexible and easy to use the Dyson V8 Animal Cord-Free vacuum is. We speak to our owners frequently and they tell us that cordless vacuums have changed the way they clean. We hear they clean more often, but in shorter bursts, spending less than 20 minutes per clean. Dyson V8 Animal features two suction modes; MAX and standard. Please keep in mind that the V8 offers plenty of suction on normal power to effectively clean your floors because of the motorized brush bar. MAX power is really only needed for tough cleaning jobs. Also, while many do use Dyson cordless machines as their main vacuum at home, if you prefer a longer run time, we’d recommend one of our compact uprights or canister models.

We would value the opportunity to assist with your machine, to help ensure your Dyson is working properly. Please feel free to contact us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Prior to using this Dyson, I had very little experience using a cordless vacuum. While my prior use had been "good," I had some concerns that, one, it would not be powerful enough and two, the cordless design/battery would further be a limitation. After some use, I can say my concerns were unwarranted and I was pleased not only with its performance, but also (nearly) everything Dyson brought to the table. First off, as with other Dyson products, the packaging is superb. Yes, it is only packaging, but even with something as straightforward as this, you can see the time, effort and thought put into every aspect of the product. This attention to detail carries through as one moves on to the product itself. Included in the packaging are the Dyson V8 Animal itself (with battery), a 6' charging power cord, a power cord docking station (which allows one to hang the vacuum while it is charging), a 28 1/2-inch extension tube, 1 large and 1 small self-powered floor sweeper brushes, a crevice tool, 2 non powered brushes and a user's manual. Once everything is out of the packaging, getting everything together was quite easy. The included manual, was clear, yet concise, with numerous pictures to aid in not only putting the unit together, but also for future maintenance. It should be noted, before first use, it is suggested to charge the unit/battery for a full 5 hours. Before moving on to the vacuum itself, I feel I must touch on the docking station. It is optional, in that you can just use the plug to charge the unit, but, for me at least, that was not the optimal solution. I liked the idea of having a dedicated location where the unit can stay, charge, hold everything and just, well, be. My problem, well, and another small one I will touch on shortly, was where to mount it? Again, perhaps this was just my experience, but I did not want it "out," to be seen, and I just do not have a lot of space. Finding a location, in general, and then one within range of the cord that needs to be plugged in was certainly a challenge for me. That said, I did find a space, and I do like the dock, very much, for the reasons I stated earlier, BUT, it seems it was not designed to hold all the provided attachments. So close to being a perfect solution, just to fall short in such a way is a bit of fail for me. If all the attachments just fit, or if some other way was provided to organize all the attachments, it would have been perfect. Again, the dock is great, just not the perfection I have come to know and expect from Dyson. As fir the vacuum, as I said earlier, since it was a cordless unit, I had my concerns about suction as well as battery performance. These are the "standard" issues within this class, of course, but the other side of these concerns are the benefits of portability and convenience. Not only did this unit easily handle my concerns, but it also did the same on the benefits side of things. It has a battery, so battery life must be discussed. I found it not to be a concern. It is advertised as a 45-minute life (when using the non-motorized attachments), and I found that to be accurate. This is for the "low" of the two power settings (the other being MAX or "high.") I did not find the need to use the "high" setting in my use, other than to see how it performed. More on that later. As with anything requiring a battery, if you plan, and keep it charged when you will need it, it should not be an issue. Again, I have a smaller space, this was my use case, but I had zero trouble getting all my vacuuming done within the limits of the battery. It was not even a thought. Lastly, it has fade-free power throughout use, that is, the unit just goes full power until the battery dies, then it is done. There is no drop off in the power of the unit as the battery depletes. I found that to be a nice feature, and honestly, something I did not even think about beforehand. Finally, how is it to use? How is the performance? It is the most portable and convenient vacuum I have ever used. No cable to manage, no outlet to be tied to, small, light, easy to maneuver on all surfaces, multiple attachments for various tasks (that are very easy to put on and take off) and all the power you need to get the clean results you are looking for. It hits all the marks. It is built well and "feels good" in the hand. I can't say how it will hold up over time, but the two-year warranty gives some piece of mind. The vacuum powers via a "soft touch" trigger grip that cuts off upon release to save the battery, and while I did not have any issues, I feel a "lock" for the button should have been provided. A small gripe, I know, but it is a frustrating omission. Once powered, it had enough suction to tackle all my surfaces, even picking up more dust and dirt from what I thought were already "clean" areas. Throughout all of my use, I didn't have to use the "high" setting, which provides more suction, but I turned it on (by flipping a simple switch) several times to test it out. I can see it helping if you have trouble spots that require more attention. Honestly, the only issue I had with suction was perhaps too much when trying to vacuum some smaller area rugs. The Dyson would "grab" it, if you know what I mean, and I had to hold it down to finish vacuuming it. Perhaps an adjustment option for height would handle this issue, but again, honestly, most "good" vacuums would suffer this same fate, so it is not a negative, just something to think about. Emptying and cleaning the canister was a simple task and the same can be said for cleaning the HEPA filtration system (which is a very nice feature). There are two filters which Dyson states should be cleaned once a month for optimal performance. Ultimately, I am quite pleased with nearly every aspect of the Dyson. It does the job, does it well and looks good doing it. In my experience, I found it worth its cost, and while I do not have the advantage at this point of seeing how it will hold up over time, I feel confident it will still be worth it down the road. I have no problem recommending this Dyson vacuum.
