    Best thermostat on the market!

Ecobee3 is clearly the best "smart thermostat" on the market today. With it's integrated remote sensors and full range of user-customizable settings, it gives the most flexibility to do exactly what you want it to do. I came very close to pulling the trigger on Nest, but worried about not being able to understand and control what the thermostat was doing, especially reading many other reviews. Ecobee3 is transparent and fully customizable. Pairing with IFTTT allows for the geo-fencing that many users crave, and features are being added continually that improve the functionality of the thermostat. I have a few wish-list features that aren't currently available, but nothing that would knock this down from a 5-star rating. Thanks Ecobee for listening to your users and giving great customer support.

So I recently moved into a new house house in northern Virginia. The house had a new Carrier HVAC but a very old Honeywell Chronotherm III. The HVAC would shut off periodically, not reach the desired temperature and was in general just not working right. After doing some research I found the Ecobee3. Now, I have a 2700 sq ft house with three levels so just because the first floor is at 72 degrees doesn't mean the upstairs is too. We quickly found out that there was a temperature variance of almost FIVE DEGREES. So with that in mind I considered the Nest, Ecobee and a new Honeywell. Taking into consideration my large home I really wanted those remote sensors and let me tell you, I could not be happier. The Ecobee3 looks great on my first floor hallway. It makes my house look much cooler than it really is. I keep the remote sensor in my sons bedroom and he is finally sleeping so soundly and not having anymore nightmares. I can not speak more highly of this product, its looks and its function. All around it is exactly what a thermostat should be. If you have a big home and are considering anything else, stop! Read the user reviews of this product and find out exactly how much better it is than all of its competitors. At first I thought that there was something wrong with my HVAC system and I was going to have the whole thing torn out and replaced. After installing this product I found out my only problem was an outdated thermostat that didn't work right. I can also adjust the temperature from my phone from literally anywhere in the world AND it lets me set high temperature alerts in case my house starts to get too hot for my dog. I saved money on HVAC installation, my electric bill and I saved stress by not worrying about what the temperature will be when I get home because I have the entire thermostat interface available to me on my phone. I can not recommend this product highly enough. If you are on the fence, don't be. You will be happy with the Ecobee.

Did my research and with our active family scedules or who's home when it was nearly impossible for the others to measure up to the Ecobee3 and by adding room sensors for temp and motion and adding it to the Amazon echo and the smart phone app it is truly the beat - and your common person can wire and set it up easily by reading manual and if needed there customer second - with I would have gotten it sooner already save over $100 mth on heating and cooling bill - had it for 3 mths now Love it

    The "Rolls" of thermostats...

I have been using my ecobee 3 (HomeKit compatible) for few months now and I'm still very happy with it. The main reasons why I bought it? Remote Sensors and Connectivity. So far, I think they are the only brand on the market offering Remote Sensors. I leave in a two stories townhouse, with one thermostat in the living room (while my bedrooms are on the first floor) and for years I had the same issues: - During Winter, with the heat naturally going up, my bedrooms are always colder than the rest of the home. This is especially true if I decide to use the chimney in the living room, where the thermostat is located - During Summer, still with the heat naturally going up, my A/C keep cooling the second floor for nothing, as while I'm sleeping, the temperature in my bedroom, being a couple of degrees less, is already comfortable A Remote Sensor solved both issues (I have several sensors around the home: kitchen, living room on the second floor and in both bedrooms on the first floor) but my ecobee allows me to give priority to only one (or more) of these sensors to trigger the A/C during my "Sleep" time. Now I can have 85 degrees in the living room, as long as I have 75 in my bedroom, as setup, my A/C will not be running anymore. And I can make a fire in the evening in winter, still the heat will turn up as soon as the temperature will go below the setup for my bedroom. Add to that: - Presence auto-detection (also active on remote sensors) which automatically switch mode (Away/Home) based on detection of people or not in your home - Geo-fencing (through HomeKit) switching mode when you leave/arrive at your home - Capability to automatically switch from Heat to A/C (very useful in Texas when it can be 50 in the morning and 80 in the afternoon) - Capability to pilot the A/C from your phone Add many other functionalities, and you got the best connected thermostat on the market! I will highly recommend this product!

We bought 2 since we dual zone. The thermostat is great looking, easy to install, easy to set up, and a breeze to use. On top of that, they don't do the yucky data collection and selling that Google Nest likes to do.

I couldn't decide between the ecobee and the nest thermostats. After using the ecobee for a few months I'm glad it was the one we chose. Having the added sensor for a different room is great. Having it use just the bedroom sensor at night allows our cold/hot room stay just right throughout the night. I like that it works with HomeKit but i haven't used the feature a lot it's just as easy to open the app and make changes. It is handy to use voice commands with Siri if you're driving home and want to adjust the temperature before getting home! Overall great purchase.

I absolutely love my Ecobee3. I has revolutionized how my home and family deal with climate control and our HVAC system. Self-install was so very easy, and the customer support team was readily available and very knowledgeable when I needed them. I had it up and running in 30 minutes! The remote sensors are what really puts this system head and shoulders above the competition. Beyond balancing the temperature in my home across all rooms, the ability to prioritize them in different comfort settings means that my wife and I can rest easy at night, knowing that our babies’ rooms are perfectly comfortable and cool! Hands down the best smart thermostat on the market, brought to us by a great and caring company!

I had held off on getting a Gen 2 Nest for a couple years, as it was certainly due up for a refresh. While I waited, I found the ecobee and it was definitely the right thermostat for me for a couple of reasons: 1 - Room sensors. This is the #1 differentiator between the Nest (and any other smart thermostat) and the ecobee. If you're spending upwards of $300 on a thermometer, I assume you have more than 1 room in your house. And often times the thermostat is not in the most important place (its in a hallway or dinning room, etc). If you want to make sure your newborn is comfortable you have to guess to over/under heat based on how their room feels. This should be nothing more than a software update for the Nest, so I don know why they do not add the feature..but even if they do, you can get the ecobee and 3 sensors for the same price as just this new Nest Gen3. 2 - Homekit support. I know this one isn't for everyone, but it certainly was important for me. I use a lot of apple products between my wife and I and, in her case, its the only way she isn't overwhelmed by technology. The beauty is there is nothing, other than again software, that prevents the ecobee from being used by other systems. It has an open API and is integrated with things like IFTTT, etc. So its a bit more "future proof" as you cannot get HomeKit certified unless you meet rigorous security standards. Which brings me to 3... security. If you use HomeKit or not, you know that the hardware and encryption is certified to be extremely extremely secure, who wouldnt want that for all their home automation. Overall, I think that from a cost/features perspective, those looking at the Nest should also look at the ecobee. It was definitely the right decision for me.

Very slick and simple design. I find the Ecobee to be much easier to use then the Nest. Touch screen is the way to go! Installation was a breeze I really was surprised how simple they made this process using the app (i used iphone). Its a very simple step by step, includes pictures, videos, directions, and allows you to take pictures to reference if needed down the road. Everything you need is included in the box, mounting screws, dry wall anchors, and even a large face plate to cover up more of the wall if your old thermostat was larger. Once actually installed, the configuration was also very simple to use and setup. It will ask you what times you are home, work, bed and so on and lets you set the temps. You can also go in and make this even more detailed. I love the ability to change temp on my phone or webpage too. I can adjust the temp if I see I will be running late and not wast energy running if no one is home. The built in sensors also can determine if someone is home or not so it will automatically sense if the home is occupied and run the unit if you are home when you said you wouldn't be and also not run the unit if it detects no one is home. Vacation scheduled is a breeze to setup. The reports/ graphs you get are a great way to view usage, over all temps, and humidity. I look forward to continuing to grow with Ecobee by adding more room sensors and also a HVAC whole home humidifier that I will setup to the Ecobee so that it can run my humidifier when it senses the house s too dry. This thing is great if you been thinking about a smart thermostat I highly recommend you go with an Ecobee.

    Really liking the Ecobee3

We've had this thermostat for nearly a month now and are very happy with it. While the remote sensors are nice, we only have a single heat pump/furnace so it doesn't really benefit us. However, the app and the web interface for the Ecobee3 are very nice and provide a lot of useful functionality when you cannot walk up to unit to make adjustments directly. Additionally, the system promises to report lots of metrics, although many of them will not appear until after the unit has been in use for one year. We looked at the Nest as well, but I preferred this one (a) because it had a real solution for systems that do not have a 'C' wire installed already (and it was surprisingly easy to use) and (b) we like the aesthetics of this better than the Nest. No regrets at this point - we'll see how it works in the long run. Because of the web interface programming this thermostat is much easier than the older thermostat that we had. As an added benefit, a new version of the App has been released that is supposed to provide geofencing capabilities. I'm not sure if this is a feature that my family will take advantage of, but it certainly will be a useful if not critical feature for other people.

I have owned this thermostat for about 2 months now. Needless to say, it has paid itself already. I had a manual thermostat that was making my power bill super high. it was tracking at about 450 bucks. I went out and bought my bee and after a month my power bill was only 220 dollars even though we were still having days of 110+ temperatures, but AC was only running when needed and when someone was here and was also only making the house comfortable where it needed to be not where nobody was at. Super easy to install and set up.

I am a landlord with many properties. I have tried all the other thermostats such as nest and Honeywell. However I have a new favorite The ecobee3 wifi enabled thermostat is an absolutely awesom hvac control device. Simple to install, very user friendly at the thermostat and on the iPhone interface. I used to be sold on nest. However I have a new favorite. The ecobee3 is very easy to use and a much better device for the tenant user interface. ... All I have to say about my Ecobee is "WOW!". I spent months researching the various smart thermostats, and came to the conclusion that none could compare to the Ecobee3. Here are a few reasons why: 1. "Smart": Like other competitors such as the Nest, Honeywell Lyric, Sensi, etc, the Ecobee is about making your home smarter. These thermostats have raised the bar on the level of programming and granular control you have over your home's HVAC system. However, the Ecobee3 raises the bar 2 notches higher. With the integration of remote sensors, a myriad of functionality is unlocked. I'll go more into that later. 2. Smarter than the competition: Even if you're not a crazy tinkerer like I am, the Ecobee's built in functionality allow you to use your room sensors (AFAIK there isn't a limit on how many you can connect) to make your system smarter than the rest. You can set your system up with "follow me", which makes the system adjust the temperature of the room it senses you're currently in. You can adjust it to focus on one specific room (such as a nursery), or you can set it to average the temperatures across all of your sensors. This is what truly sets Ecobee apart from the competition. 3. Even Smarter: Through Homekit/Siri, Amazon Echo, a smart hub implementation, you can integrate voice control and geofencing into your Ecobee. Voice control allows you to check the current status, change mods, change temp (to both specific temps or an increase/decrease of x degrees), etc. Geofencing means that when your phone sees you enter/leave a specific map area, it will adjust your thermostat into either the home or away mode in order to ensure comfort upon arriving home without sacrificing the economics of the smart thermostat. 4. Genius level: With IFTTT, you can make the Ecobee do all sorts of things, such as notifying you about run times, temp spikes, and even occupancy detected by your sensors. Further still, with Android and Tasker, you can make your thermostat do pretty much anything you want. For example, my system is tied to my door and window sensors and will pop up and ask if it should continue running if it shows an open door or window. This serves as both a home security measure AND an energy saving measure, as I probably don't want AC running if I opened the windows on a cool summer evening. This thermostat is my 2nd best home automation purchase (wireless Schlage smart lock is #1), and whether you're just looking for something better than your 5+2 programmable thermostat (like my wife), or a complete home automation geek like me, this will be one of the best purchases you make this year. Buy it now, and get enough remote sensors for all of your important spaces. I have master bedroom, nursery, great room, office, and basement theater covered. I'll be adding sensors for guest room and my other basement family rooms in the near future.

Best Smart Thermostat on the Market

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

NOTE: (This review is for the non-HomeKit-Enabled Ecobee3, which is exactly the same as the HomeKit-Enabled one except for the HomeKit functionality). I really believe this is the best thermostat on the market, for a number of reasons. 1) This is the biggie: External sensors! You can place multiple external sensors around the house so that the Ecobee3 (E3) knows that the temperature is in different parts of the house. Now, the E3 doesn't do zoning, meaning it can't selectively heat/cool different parts of the house, but it can *average* the temperature across multiple sensors to try to "even out" comfort across your home, instead of only "caring" about the temperature where the thermostat is. Now, these little external sensors ALSO have another feature: occupancy detection! Which brings me to the next feature: 2) "Follow Me": So, since the E3 knows both the temperature in other parts of the house AND if someone is present, it can dynamically "care" about the temperature only in rooms that have recently seen occupancy! So, if you enter a room and start moving around, the E3 begins to "care" about the temp on that sensor and includes that sensor in the "average" temp of the house. And if a sensor hasn't seen movement in a while, it will stop caring about that sensor's temp. This is the "Follow Me" feature. (PS - This feature is disabled for the "Sleep" comfort profile because no one will be moving around the house while they're sleeping) 3) "Smart Home/Away": This feature also uses the occupancy detection feature of the sensors (and E3 itself). If the E3 and all of the sensors haven't seen occupancy in a few hours, the E3 can assume no one is home and enter "Away" mode even when the E3's schedule is telling it you should be home (like after work, or in the morning, etc). So if you unexpectedly leave and it's not part of your usual schedule, the E3 can adapt. The reverse is also true: If the E3 or sensors sees a bunch of occupancy happening when you're supposed to be in "Away" mode, it'll switch back to "Home" mode. (PS - This feature is disabled for the "Sleep" comfort profile because no one will be moving around the house while they're sleeping) 3) "Care" About Different Sensors Per-Comfort-Profile: Why would you care what temperature it is in your living room when you're sleeping upstairs at night? Answer: You don't! So the E3 lets you set which external sensors to "care" about depending on what comfort profile is being used. For instance, at night I tell the E3 to only "care" about the temperature in our 3 bedrooms and to ignore the rest of the house/sensors. So it's always the temp I want for sleeping at night. 4) Accessory/Humidifier control: The E3 can run an accessory piece of equipment, like a dehumidifier, humidifier, or whole house ventilator. I have mine hooked up to my humidifier (whole-house one on the side of the furnace ductwork). So the E3 uses the humidistat inside of it instead of the "dumb dial" humidistat near your furnace to decide when to turn on the humidifier during heating season. Now, one awesome thing about letting the E3 control your humidifier is that you can do "frost control" functionality WITHOUT an external temp sensor sticking out of the side of your house! Frost control is where the humidifier doesn't run as often when it's *really* cold outside, as some houses get frost on the inside of windows/window frames when the humidity is at a "normal" level. More modern humidifiers allow you drill a small hole in the side of your house and stick a little temp probe out the hole. This means the thermostat can automatically "dial back" the humidity when it's super-cold so you don't get window frost. BUT, because the E3 is internet-connected, it KNOWS the temp outside without a temp probe! So you don't have to install a temp probe and get the same benefit of frost reduction. Awesome! 5) Super-Granular Control: This thing has so many controls for minor things, it's awesome (although default settings work just fine if you want to plug-and-play). Partial list I can think of off the top of my head: --Control minimum rest period between A/C cycles (to protect A/C compressor from damage) --Control minimum outdoor temp that A/C will run at (to protect A/C compressor from damage) --Allow A/C to "overcool" house by a degree or two to reduce excess humidity (adjustable) --Set amount of time blower fan will run after A/C turns off (to clear ducts of cold air) --Set a minimum amount of time the blower fan will run each hour (to circulate air in the home if the A/C or heat hasn't run recently) --A ton of other things I can't remember 6) Amazing Web Reports: On the Ecobee website, you can see a huge plethora of reports related to your energy use. --You can see a timeline graph of when heat/cooling/humidifier/blower were running along with the "calculated" indoor temp, outdoor temp, etc so you can see the activity for the previous day. --You can see a "heating/cooling hours vs outdoor temp" graph (per day) so you can see the effect of the outdoor temp on how much you run heat/cool. --You can download a spreadsheet of data with 5-minute granularity (up to a month at a time) that shows the status of EVERYTHING: blower/heat/cool/humidifier on/off, temperature of each sensor, occupancy of each sensor, outdoor temp, outdoor humidity, indoor temp, indoor humidity, etc. I easily used this data to determine exactly how much electricity I used on HVAC last month (blower+A/C compressor+A/C compressor fan run times * amps * voltage = watt hours). Anyway, this thing absolutely blows my mind. Nerd paradise, yet would work fine with ZERO configuration. Oh, AND it has an IFTTT (If This, Then That) channel so you can make the E3 change temperature profiles, home/away/etc profiles, via IFTTT triggers.

    "Big Data" for your house!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Note: I have the original, non-Home Kit enabled version, however this review applies to both types. Other reviewers have done a great job already, so I'll just mention the feature that I enjoy the most: raw data download. From the ecobee website, you can log in and download all the historical data for your thermostat. To my knowledge, this feature is unique to the ecobee3. For any custom date range I can get a huge .csv file showing the temperature and occupancy for each of my sensors, indoor and outdoor humidity, HVAC system mode and on-time and staging information, fan speed, and wind speed. All of this is 5 minute increments. Temperature is reported in tenths of a degree. What is amazing about this is how open it is. This is "Big Data" for your house! Most people who just want a "set and forget" thermostat don't care (and the ecobee3 works fine for that too!), but some of us really want to dig into the thermal energy characteristics of our homes. Ecobee's open access to raw data could enable many new possibilities for deeply understanding our energy usage. Here are some of my ideas: 1. Accurate modeling of a home's thermal energy characteristics. 2. Accurate estimation of the return on investment of specific proposed insulation improvements. 3. Differentiation between energy loss through thermal conduction (insulation) vs. convection (air gaps, drafts). 4. Quantification of home energy efficiency, possibly adding resale value to the home. Just to be clear, none of these have been implemented or are available currently in any way, these are just some ideas I've had for things that could be done with the raw data that ecobee3 provides.
