Useless capture card and support, disappointed
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After doing way too much research into capture cards, I settled on this one, and after visiting a couple best buys I finally managed to grab one in stock. My excitement pretty quickly turned to disappointment when I tried to set it up though - despite using USB and HDMI cables and ports that were all compliant / correct protocol to fully work with the 4K X and my connected devices, I couldn't get a video signal through to either my display or my capture software. I tried connecting different devices, different displays, different cables, checking for firmware and software updates, disconnecting other USB devices to check for conflicts, disabling HDCP settings on all devices, changing EDID settings in the 4K capture software for the card to match the display; no matter what I tried nothing would get any sort of video signal to come out of this thing. I do IT support for a living so I'm not uncomfortable with this sort of troubleshooting, but after trying every suggestion I could find for this issue online I eventually turned to Elgato support. Elgato support was what really sealed the deal on this disappointing experience. The first representative I talked to had me generate a support log zip file and email it to them, promising he'd respond the next morning with next steps. When I hadn't heard from him by the afternoon I called their support again, and this time the rep I talked to told me that their capture cards aren't designed to capture a PC (despite the elgato website advertising the 4K X as working for Windows PC capture) and that there's no point in using one since I can just capture gameplay via software in OBS. I tried to explain the purpose of using an external capture card on PC, namely avoiding the performance hit that running capture software takes, and this elgato rep tried to tell me that "actually the PC takes more of a performance hit when you're using a capture card, because it has to process the capture card too". After hearing this I didn't even try to correct him or point out that he was contradicting their advertising, I just gave up - elgato delivers, for a premium price, non-functional devices and support that doesn't understand fundamental basics of how their tech works. I'm returning this thing first chance I get.

Posted .Hey there! For the best performance and minimal input lag, make sure to use the HDMI passthrough (HDMI Out). That way, you’ll get a direct signal with no noticeable latency.

Good product for new purchase, but not as upgrade.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It takes a pretty powerful computer to get the most out of this product. It might be worth it if you don't already have the version with the card that plugs into the motherboard, but I didn't notice any increased efficiency, which is what I was looking for.

Not good for dual PC streaming
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It was capable of projecting 4k, but the FPS dropped to below 30 frames. Did not work as intended. The earlier Elgato HD60 works better at 1080p60fps

Posted .Thank you for the feedback, Colin. The 4K X supports capture up to 4K144 via HDMI 2.1 and is built for high-performance dual PC setups — FPS dropping below 30 at 4K is not expected behavior. In a dual PC streaming configuration, the streaming PC needs to meet the full system requirements, including a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port and a capable CPU and GPU to handle the 4K encode in real time. A USB 3.2 Gen 1 connection, for example, will limit capture resolution and frame rate. Our support team at help.elgato.com can review your streaming PC specs and help identify what's causing the bottleneck — there's a good chance this is something that can be resolved.

Don’t buy this one
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Junk. I bought this thing so I could record PS5 gaming on my computer. This is the last thing that this device wants to do. Not wanting to get beat, I tried everything I could think of and reached out to their tech support who has been useless til this point. Obviously I’m outside of warranty with a nonfunctional device. BOTTOM LINE: get the $30 one on Amazon. Literally plug and play. I love it.

Posted .Sorry to hear it’s not working correctly. 4K X includes a two-year warranty with Elgato, and we can look into replacing it if needed. Please reach out to us at elgato.com/help.
