If you are looking for a laptop with a large screen, good battery life, multiple connectivity options and a fast performance, this laptop might be the one for you. Here is the review of key areas based on my personal observations. Storage. This laptop features the Intel Optane drive which here comes with the combination of the 1 TB 7,200 rpm disk (HD) mounted as SATA and the 16 GB SSD mounted as PCIe. I was initially concerned about the speed of this arrangement. I have another laptop from a different manufacturer which happens to have the same chip and the same amount of RAM memory (12 GB with 2,400 speed), where I replaced the original 1 TB SATA HD with a 1 TB SSD also SATA. I wanted to see how both compare, my older laptop with the SSD and this HP with the Optane drive. I started up each laptop and compared the boot times, doing this several times. The HP was only slightly behind my other laptop by maybe a second or two. Quite impressive in my book. I also launched the same applications on both and did not notice any noticeable difference in speed. My conclusion is that the Optane drive does really work as advertised, it is fast and can save you money by not requiring the SSD drive. Power and battery life. The battery is a 3-cell 52.5-WHr Li-ion unit. Laptop comes with the 65 Watts charger but it also is compatible with the 90 Watts HP Smart Adapter charger if you want to get it separately for even faster charging. The 65 Watts charger takes less than 2 hours to get the HP fully charged with about 30 to 40 minutes to get it charged to 50%. That assumes the unit is on and is being used while charging. I do believe they advertise it as having up to 9 hours of battery life but in my testing using continuously either web browsing or YouTube videos the average duration was about 6 to 7 hours. The power setting was set to 70% towards max performance with the screen brightness set to full. I do like the fact that the power button is above the keyboard, not on the side of the laptop like many other units as if I grab my laptop to move with the power button on the top I will not accidently shut if off like it did happen with my other laptop. Keyboard. Everyone has a different preference if it comes to the key travel depth, this keyboard has a decent amount of travel, feels comfortable to me. The keyboard can be lit, with only two positions, on or off. What I do like about the function keys is that in order to use any of the features (say for example to lower the sound, mute it or change the brightness of the screen) I do not have to simultaneously hit the FN key. Just hitting the specific function key will do. The touchpad works very well, responds well to gestures. Ports. On the left you get the following: the internet cable connector RJ45 if you cannot connect (or prefer not to) to the wireless network. Two USB 3.1 Generation 1 (which is a new term for USB 3.0 and offers speed up to 5Gbps). Neither one of these two is a charging type. Next you have the HDMI. Then the USB 3.1 Type C, which is the charging type. Next comes the headphone jack followed by the Kensington security slot and ending up with the SD card reader. On the right you get the power cable connector, another USB 3.1 Generation 1, though this one is charging. Next the DVD drive and the fingerprint reader, which due to its location is a sliding type, you need to slide your finger. Personally I would prefer a full fingerprint reader located somewhere next to the keyboard, but I found this side fingerprint reader working relatively well for me. Other components. The sound quality is quite decent for a laptop in this price range. I tried to listen using the full volume and did not have any concerns about how it sounded. Screen is very responsive to the touch, the screen brightness (which can be adjusted either by Windows settings or directly via the function keys on the keyboard) is great comparing to other laptops in our household. Camera is capable of taking pictures up to 1,280x720 and shooting 720p 30 fps video. The quality is decent, might get somewhat grainy in a darker room, works well in full light. When the camera is on, the light appears next to the actual camera so you know when it is on. Laptop is Windows Ink friendly but does not come with the stylus included. Finally the wireless connection does work very well for me, no issues with getting disconnected at all, getting the ping value and the download and upload connection speeds comparable with my iPad Pro, well above 150 Mbps (while being good 30 feet from the router). Overall conclusion. In my opinion this HP 17M-BW0013DX offers a great value for someone looking a fully featured laptop with a large screen (without the need for the 2 in 1 feature), offering a great multitude of access ports (more than many other competitors), very strong battery life for its size, quick charging, speedy system due to the Optane drive and the 8th generation I7-8550U chip with 12 GB RAM memory. It can be secured on location by the Kensington security cable preventing theft if you need to leave it in the office. The DVD drive offers extra flexibility if it comes to moving files. Well built, sturdy, with modern components, it looks like a safe bet if you in the market for a 17 inch laptop. I am happy with it.

I have HP for over 10 years for personal and work and never had a problem. Actually my old laptops are still running somewhere with my daughters no problem. With this one, just a week before the "factory guaranty" expires, the fan stops working properly and since then, the PC is very SLOW! works like in waves, making a huge problem to work remotely besides annoying. After this, I start getting a lot of offers "guaranty extension" from HP, raising a a red flag and making me think about the "programmed obsolescence". I called but since no guaranty, it means a few hundred dollars to fix it. I am not sure if it is bad luck, or whatever. I guess I should get a new one... but this time, will not be HP.
