I purchased this laptop for a Program Manager who uses technical drawings in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. I would not recommend this laptop for these purposes. Even turned to the highest setting, the screen brightness is still too dark and a strain to focus on image details.

A Great Choice for a Work Computer Upgrade

This is my second HP laptop, and I am still very satisfied with the brand. I was looking for a laptop that was powerful, yet portable. The 17-inch screen makes it easy on the aging eyes and great for viewing multiple documents and windows simultaneously. It is simple to connect additional monitors with the HDMI output. Weighing less than 6.5 pounds, it’s easy to transport between work and home and when traveling via plane or train. While at the office, the Gigabit Ethernet LAN port allows it to plug into the wired network and while on the road, the Wireless-AC router bumps up speed nearly 3x faster than Wireless-N. The setup was effortless with the assistance of Cortana. The most challenging part was finding the fingerprint reader on the setup instructions sheet. The little blue circles with the numbers were next to impossible to read. But what a great feature! Plus, there is the PIN option for extra security. The computer automatically connected to my Bluetooth HP printer and other computers on my network to move over files. In less than 30 minutes, I was able to get working and be productive. What I thought interesting was the wording “get near SSD performance”, which means this laptop is not SSD. It still performs fast though. The drop-hinge design is bizarre at first glance, but you quickly understand the advantage with the improved keyboard angle for typing while keeping the fan unblocked and allowing for better air circulation. If you decide to replace your outdated laptop, the HP Envy 17.3 will be a great workhorse. Reasons to upgrade: Touchscreen (once you get used to it, it’s hard to go back) Great resolution (1920x1080) 8th Gen Intel core i7-855OU mobile processor 16GB of RAM 12GB system memory for multitasking 1TB hard drive for file storage space Built-in media reader for simple photo transfer Tons of ports (Headphone/microphone combo jack, 3 USB, 3 USB 3.0 Type A, 2 USB Type A Charging, 1 USB 3.1 Type C, 1 USB Type C Charging Ports, 1 HDMI Outputs A full size, backlit keyboard DVD writer (perfect for watching movies when traveling on the HD Widescreen LED while listening to the Bang & Olufsen Audio speakers for awesome sound) The opportunity to get some deals on software, printers, accessories for your brand-new laptop

The HP Envy is wonderful. My first impression, was WOW this is super heavy, but I quickly dismissed that after opening up this beautiful laptop and putting it to work. Cortana greeted me immediately and guided me through the setup procedures which made the easy process even easier. The display is beautiful as well and I love that it's touch-screen. It's not something I've found I need to use often, although I'm sure that'll increase as I get used to it but it is pretty cool. I did have to sign something recently and it was incredibly easy to just sign on screen. I loved that! This laptop is super speedy for everything from surfing the internet to checking email, creating spreadsheets, organizing pictures, creating documents and anything else I've thrown at it. One frustration I have is the fingerprint scanner doesn't work well. Very rarely does it actually work, but it's easy enough to enter a PIN or password to enter the laptop anyway, so it's not a huge impact to my experience. Overall, I'm impressed with this laptop and it's design and am enjoying my laptop experience.

Overall this laptop should do everything you need it too. It looks nice and is fast for a laptop once setup. Only one small accessory is needed, the included dedicated charger. For a bigger laptop it’s not heavy for it’s class. The processor is fast and has hyper-threading turning the 4 physical cores into 8 logical processes. 12GB of memory is plenty for most applications. The screen is a standard 1080p and looks nice. The finger print reader makes it easy and quick to log on. Boot up time to Windows 10 is decent. Removing bloatware was not hard (and nothing reinstalled itself), and there was not a lot of it. The installed HP programs are not intrusive and worked well. Battery life is pretty long, with movies or games it lasts for hours. It states up to 9 hours and depending on what you’re doing it seems it could do it. Being a full-sized laptop and not a 2-in-1 or tablet has advantages. A much larger screen, a CD/DVD drive if you need one, a built in ethernet port, multiple USB connections and better sound. The microphone system does well too. Note, the USB C can only charge other devices and not charge the laptops battery per the manual. A nice full-size backlit keyboard and a large touchpad. The camera on top of the screen was average, good for Skype etc. Like many smaller devices the screen is touch and works great. When you open the screen, it pushes up the back slightly to angle the keyboard a bit and lets air circulate under the laptop. The laptop got warm, but never hot, even under full loads. Make sure to set the computer to use the Nvidia card when it can. I played some less demanding games and they looked great and played smoothly. I was able to connect another 1080p monitor by HDMI with no issues. In terms of speed, the Optane 16GB drive can help. Loading programs and updating the laptop was painfully slow with a spinning HDD when SSD’s or M.2 are showing up in many devices. The HDD was usually the bottleneck whenever the laptop bogged down. A 1GB download and install from the internet or local server would wait for the HDD to catch up. The Windows 1803 update really made the HDD work; the update took almost 2 hours to complete with the HDD working at 100% most of the time while the CPU was not working hard. Upgrading to Windows 10 Pro was also heavy on the HDD. However, once software is downloaded or installed, the Optane memory can really shine. As the Optane cache figures out what you use most and caches it, the loading becomes lighting fast. After loading some large Excel/word/adobe files I kept opening and closing them. Each time the load times got faster, it was the same as an SSD in the end. But, you only have 13.4 GB or Optane memory to play with (16GB before formatting). It should be more than enough for most uses, it’s way more than HDD caches. The Optane is a separate drive in the laptop that can be turn off if wanted. But, if you exceed it or have new programs or files, you're stuck with slow HDD load times. Overall, it’s a good laptop and for most uses should load up your programs and surf the web with no problems. Most people will probably never worry about the HDD speed, and the Optane drive helps speed up programs. You’ll notice processes speed up the more you use them. This will be great for taking places when a tablet isn’t up to the job. Would I replace my desktop with it? No. Laptops have a place and this one fills the role well.

The color of the key IDs hardly contrasts with the color of of the keys. The comma ID is tiny and indistinguishable from the period and apostrophe. You have to squint to use the keyboard.

BE SURE YOU CAN RESTORE YOUR BACKUP

All computers are prone to catastrophic failure, so it is prudent to backup your data on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it appears that this computer is not compatible with professional-grade backup software like Acronis that provides an emergency boot disk (Linux or Windows) as it does not see the hard drive. Additionally, you cannot create a secure partition on the drive. I believe the problems are related to a poor design and the use of the Intel Optane memory solution. Also check on the reduced memory limitations on this machine. I recommend looking elsewhere.

    Great Laptop

This is a really nice laptop. It's fast and has plenty of RAM. The 1TB hard drive might be small for the younger people who download everything but it work's for me. This is an upgrade from an older 17 inch HP that I own so it's nice to have the speedier network and the i7 chip. I do have issues with it reading my finger but it works well enough 90% of the time. The speaker system is nice for a laptop. The only con I have is it is just as heavy as my older 17 inch HP. Not really a con for me as I'm used to it but thought it might have been lighter. I think anyone buying it will enjoy it.

This is one heavy duty laptop. Not one you want to lug around everywhere unless you have Popeye arms. But it is one sweet piece of equipment. Super fast and with the 17 inch screen, this thing is a monster!! A huge 1 TB harddrive will let me do a lot of my photo editing on it without having to worry about space from the RAW files for quite some time. It looks very high quality and even tilts up at a little bit of an angle when open. This is key!! It not only looks better, it allows some air to cycle underneath it while it’s sitting on the desk. The touch screen is very resposive. Lighted keyboard that can be turned off to save power. It seems they went the extra mile with all these little things. I’m very pleased First turn on and setup to being online took about 10 minutes. Set up went easy and Cortana walks you through all of it. I downloaded Chrome, synced all my favorites and was good to go. My Microsoft account even synced my PC wallpaper to it. It automatically detected both my wireless printers and installed them both flawlessly. Man technology is nice these days Ran Novabench on it and got a score of 1510 on it and that’s mainly due to the integrated NVIDIA MX150 video card. It really got some great frame rates on the graphics test. Not many laptops come with built in CD/DVD players any more but this one sure does. So it will be nice to be able to watch movies on actual disc or listen to the occasional CD on it. I do still prefer CDs to mp3s and the Bang and Olufsen speakers sound fantastic on this. I do still wish this was a bit lighter. I think it weighs more than a Toughbook I had years ago. But overall, this is a killer laptop that can’t be recommended enough.
