||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I only have had the computer for 8 days and it has been very disappointing. It hangs on trying to do more than one task. start up time it's like minutes not seconds.. The laptop i was trying to upgrade from works faster than this one..

Not reliable
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After about two months, this model Envy gave a "System Fan is not operating correctly upon startup" and the fan would pulse loudly, leading to a shutdown. This was from working off a desk and not off my lap or with anything constricting the airflow. Best Buy Nampa changed it out directly for another PC of the same model. Negative on the PC but props to Nampa, ID Best Buy.

Your potential desktop replacement!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When it comes to vendors asking me to write a review -- especially for laptops that boast the kind of specifications such as what the HP Envy 17 provides -- one of the first questions I ask is whether it could conceivably be a desktop replacement. In this case, that answer is a resounding "yes!" Let me define what I mean by a "desktop-replacement." If I were to attach a monitor to it, would I get the same performance from the device as I would a full-fledged desktop computer? Once again, the answer is "yes." What makes the HP Envy 17 desktop-worthy? Besides the fact that it has an actual DVD drive integrated (something that's been slimmed out of most laptops lately), it also carries both USB and USB Type-C ports, an HDMI port, a full RJ-45 port (it expands upon plugging an Ethernet cable into it), integrated gigabit Ethernet, a multi-format SD card reader, and 802.11ac (2x2) /Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and dedicated NVIDIA GeForce graphics. But this is only the half of it. While I could go on about the screen (it's certainly crisp, clear and wide), the test unit I received came with a 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive. Since size almost never equates to speed, and I downright despise those laptops that give me plenty of hard drive space but take five minutes to fully boot up, something that I didn't know that came with the HP Envy 17 was a component that Intel calls Optane memory. While I always encourage folks to go find things out on their own, the long story short is that Intel has finally beaten the "slowness" gap for conventional (non-SSD) hard drives by solving a fundamental problem. With exceedingly fast processors and RAM in abundance, it has always been the case that hard drives were the slow spot. After all, data has to get from hard drive to CPU and then to memory, and the "highways" that provide the access sometimes slow down more than a major-city Interstate at the height of rush hour. Intel has decided to take some SSD RAM (essentially) and put 16GB (for one solution) between the hard drive and the CPU. Then, these components are tuned such that maybe 25% of the operating system's most-used activities "act" like an SSD. Again, it's a perception issue and may not work for every situation, but so far, on this test unit, I can see almost no difference between 1 TB/16GB Optane and a purely SSD-based system operating on its own. This feature alone not only makes me say this is a "desktop replacement" laptop, but I'll definitely be looking for this singular feature in future laptops. HP continues to ramp their game with sleek, modern and incredibly capable laptops. You will not go wrong with the HP Envy 17.

Not Quite Perfect, But Beautiful
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've spent my time playing with the HP ENVY 17" laptop and I can say that its a beautiful product. HP likes to present the Envy-line as top of the line competitors to Apple and is putting the effort in to design them in a way that feels premium and it shows. When it comes time to actually do something on this laptop though there are a few issues that come out, especially compared to the current offerings from the competition (Dell, Lenovo, Asus). Word of warning, and no judgement against this particular laptop but in general -- if you're going to get a 17" laptop be aware you're not really getting a go anywhere productivity machine but more of a desktop that can be picked up and brought to any room in your house that you want to work in. Its big, too big for most shoulder bags backpacks or hand bags and its heavy, like as much as a couple thick textbooks and I wouldn't want to block any more than a couple blocks with it on my back. What you get for that size and weight is an epic viewing experience on the FHD screen that, when put up to your face like a laptop does, feels massive. Its unfortunate that they didn't cram a UHD screen into the same spot given that 4k has become my default resolution for monitors in the last 18 months and is even present on my other personal laptop. The graphics card is OK, its going to struggle with some of the latest games, as I saw screen hiccups and rendering issues when playing a couple new titles on it that I didn't on my Radeon-driven desktop. Probably the biggest sin of this laptop is only equiping 12GB of RAM, sodlered (according to datasheet, I didn't look) in. Every other machine I have for work or play has at least 16GB, and if your running Windows 10 with any multi-tasking you really need it all. I tried to screencast Forza and the HP just couldn't take it which is a shame, because as I said -- it looks beautiful, and having that screen real-estate in your lap is such a big oppurtunity. The last point that I'd like to make is I'm not sure why companies continue to put DVD drives in laptops -- I haven't put a DVD in a laptop for at least 4 years. I'd love to be able to watch a blu-ray on my laptop but haven't found the right computer for it. Ultimately, this looks great and has some pretty sweet specs (besides the RAM) and will be a great laptop for use around the house.

Poor quality buttons
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This computers buttons are very hard to see unless you are directly on top of it! The brighter the room the more glare silver produces . Even the screen produces sufficient glare making it annoying to use in different lighting conditions! Very pleasant surprise
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I usually buy laptops that are geared for gamers. I'm not a gamer but always liked the higher end specs as my desktop replacement. I thought that getting a laptop for less money and with lesser specs would feel like a downgrade. To my surprise, this laptop feels like an upgrade in every way. This computer is thinner and sturdier feeling than the other large screen laptops I have owned. The power supply is much more compact and lighter than any of my past laptops. The Cortana guided setup was the fastest and easiest initial computer setup I have ever done. Transferring files on a thumb drive I found that the USB SS ports are actually very fast. Every batch I transferred via thumb drive stayed above 100 mbs for the entire transfer. The touch pad is a cut above my current laptops touchpad. The fans are much quieter than the last few laptops I have owned and seem to turn on less often and stay on for shorter periods. I can make it through my typical day without the power adapter being plugged in. I haven’t owned a touch screen laptop before and am still getting used to it. At this point using touch on a vertical screen is still kind of awkward. A minor annoyance is the way that the screen hinges. The bottom of the screen, when open, lifts the back of the computer up a bit which is nice when sitting on a desk but when I sit with it in my lap the bottom edge of the screen and corners can be a bit uncomfortable. So far, I’ve found this to be a much nicer laptop than the less than two year similar one that it replaces at about 1/3 less in price. I have found nothing not to like about this laptop!

Nice laptop, big on size and good on perf
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having not used a large-screen laptop for years, this came as a pleasant, albeit BIG surprise. Make no mistake, this is a big laptop with some heft to it and with a big keyboard [+10-key] and big screen [1920x1080 rez]. As is today's norm, KB is backlit, feels good and trackpad of a good size [though I use a mouse on laptops as it is handier]. Builtr-in DVD drive, a nice touch. +1 Build: Feels solid. Seems to be a combo of aluminum and painted plastic; nice looking machine. Top hinges in such a way that the rear of the laptop is lifted as the top is opened. +1 Performance is fine. 8th gen i7 w a good RAM allocation and plenty of storage. The Optane cache for the 1TB HD works well; my desktop PC has this drive combo and, though not as fast as an SSD drive, is a fine-performing compromise. +1 Battery life: Average, in my experience. Nothing extraordinary in either direction. +0 It is not far off the mark to think of this as a desktop replacement first, laptop second; this could be a desktop replacement that needs lots of space depending upon how you set it up. Plenty of ports for connectivity although it appears no dock is available [a personal preference]. Built-in wireless and BT work well; I consistently got great speeds on my wireless network . Never having used a touchscreen with a PC of my own I had time to try it out and find that I'm neither here nor there on the function - handy on occasion, wouldn't miss it if it wasn't a feature. YMMV, of course. This is not meant as a dig but this is a great average laptop for average activities. Not a gaming rig nor does it pretend to be. For travel, there are better choices. But as a desktop replacement, it has the necessary features to make it suitable [again, with the exception of a dock]. If my review seems somewhat neutral, it's because nothing here jumps out at me as a stand-out feature; this is not bad as the overall package seems well thought-out and realized. +1 My completely random, unscientific score is: +4

Rough start, but great ever since!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this several days ago as an Open Box item from the local Best Buy store, and got a great deal $200 cheaper than new, and in excellent condition). It was stated to be Geek Squad tested and certified, so I had a bit more comfort level with buying it than I normally would have with an open box computer. When I got it home, I immediately started setup, but the first load of the Windows setup program hung, the dot circle stopped spinning, and it just sat there saying “just a few more minutes” for about 30 minutes, at which point I powered it off. Upon powering it back on, it went right through that point, and went through the Cortana setup, which went fairly quickly. I created my account, logged in, and started removing bloatware (McAfee was the first thing to go). It worked, but was a bit sluggish, so I rebooted, and that’s when the problems started... it kept hanging when loading Windows (black screen with my cursor the only thing available). I finally got into Task Manager and saw that the HDD was at 100%, and it took a long time to get Windows to load, but it didn’t work right. While waiting, I contacted HP support, and was surprised to get someone fairly quickly (i.e., within 20 minutes) By the time I started talking to her, Windows started to operate at a more normalized level, but I continued with support, who remoted in, kicked off several Windows Updates and HP Driver updates, and then ran optimization after the subsequent reboots. All told, I spent about an hour and a half on the phone, and I was ready to return this laptop, believing it to be faulty. As soon as she was done, the laptop ran perfectly! I was skeptical, so I worked with it for about another hour and a half, including installing software, rebooting, creating accounts for my family, etc, but never again experienced an issue. The next day, I ran the full suite of diagnostics (motherboard, hard drive, memory, etc), which took about 4 hours to complete, but it passed everything completely. It has now been about 4 days of pretty heavy usage, and it is fast in every way, never has even a slight stutter, and works better than I could have ever dreamed! It was enough to turn what would have been a 1 Star review into a 5 Star review, but I am docking a star for all of the headaches I had to work through to get to this point. I have heard a lot about new laptops having a lot of issues with Windows 10 until everything is updated, which baffles me, but I saw it first hand. I mentioned this to a coworker, and they said that they are having the same issues with a new HP laptop he had bought, and he was going to try to do the same thing (update everything, and see if it improves). This is something that can really affect sales and reviews of a laptop like this, and something that I feel Geek Squad should have gone through during their testing/certification. Had Best Buy been open still when these issues began, I’m sure I would have taken it right back, but I’m glad I stuck with it, and now I have exactly what I wanted in a laptop! It’s a beautiful screen, high-quality feel, and excellent performance! If you get one, and have issues, work through them before tossing it back in the box to take it back, as I can only praise the laptop at this point!

A Beast!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is massive. Not only has it got a 17 I no Darren but, it packs an mx150 graphics card, 12 gb of RAM, a 1 TB, AND a Blu Ray drive. Yes this laptop has a disk drive, something most laptops have ditched these days. Because of all of this hardware, this is a thick and have laptop. And because of the way the hinge works and the weight, it's honestly pretty uncomfortable to use in your lap. The back edge really digs into your legs. But, it works great on a deal! The 8th gen i7, 12 gb RAM, and MX150 graphics card have been able to push all the stuff I've thrown at it, granted it's mostly spreadsheets, email, YouTube, browsing, etc. I haven't noticed any slow down. But, I wouldn't expect this graphics card to be able to play games on ultra hi def if you plan to game on it. It's definitely on the lower end of graphics cards. The screen is bright and cross. It's really the best part about this laptop. I've never owned a laptop this big and I really don't want to use one with a smaller screen ever again. The keyboard toes well and the backlight stays on as long as you want which isn't the case on some laptops. Battery life is about as advertised, I haven't had any trouble getting through the day with it. There are a ton of ports, USB, USB C, HDMI, you name it, you'll have them all here. My only other complaint about this laptop is the finger print reader. It's in a word document in the side of the laptop and honestly doesn't work well. I've never got it to work on the first try and most of the time it doesn't work at all. Overall, it's a great laptop for people that want a huge screen if you can compromise with a not so great experience in the lap.

Beautiful and very well design Powerhouse
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.HP- Envy 17M, Great Built, & Beautiful Design is like having a portable desktop. This machine is a power house, it has all type of ports; HDMI, 3xUSB3, 1xUSBC, Ethernet, SD Card slot, and it also has a DVD-RW Drive. Not only has all the ports you ever wanted but the sound system is made by Bang & Olufsen. Graphics is powered by Nvidia GeForce which is good but not the best for hard core gamers. Wireless connectivity it has Bluetooth and wireless Lan which support (b/g /n/AC). The heart of this machine is an Intel 8thGen i7 processor with 1TB of hard drive, and 12GB DDR4 SDRAM. The screen is massive 17inch 1080p LED touch screen, which is great for media playback, the only bad thing is the glare. I was surprise how slim this thing was with all the stuff that carries inside including that DVD-RW drive. This machine was meant for media and productivity specially because it has a full size backlit keyboard with numeric pad. I am not the writer type person I used 3 to 4 fingers to type, I assume a lot of you will love the keys feedback as they are soft and well-spaced. That being said this is not for everyone as of course is 17 inch, not as easy to carry around, and is also weight about 5lbs. One thing you have to take into account is that, once this is on your lap it will feel very light for a 17 inch and it also very quiet. The battery life is really impressive, after installing software and playing media it lasted little over 7hrs. The built in HD camera, and the fast and responsive finger print reader makes a good option to use the Windows Hello. I was not impressed with the sound despite it has a Bang & Olufsen speakers, also the track pad had few missed here and there. Another thing I was disappointed was, if adding a disc drive to the unit why not a Blu-ray drive instead, DVD is almost obsolete. Overall If you like big screen laptop with touch screen, use physical media and don’t want to break the bank don’t look any further, this machine for the price it has plenty to offer. Pros: • Great built beautiful design. • Touch Screen • Connectivity Ports • Full Backlit keyboard with numeric pad. • Quiet fans. • Fast processing. • Battery life. Cons: • Display glare. • No Blu-Ray instead of DVD • Sound system

Well Built Machine
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This HP laptop is an extremely well built machine. It feels very sturdy and is definitely one of HP's better models. It's loaded with features and overall just feels like a machine that is built to last. It is fast and not bloated with software.
