Runs out sooo fast!

I it comes in an 212 XL pack that's better but I usually don't print in color so I get the standard 212 and XL for the black only. My blue and pink were empty so the printer refused to print. Not even in black and white. I replaced the two empty colors then reset the ink then it showed the yellow empty but it had not been used. What's wrong here?
