“No Ink Cartridges” called to me….

Epson - EcoTank ET-2800 >> “No Ink Cartridges” called to me…. Pardon me but the first few paragraphs ramble on about my experiences and consumer concerns I have had with the high cost of ink cartridges over the past few decades… and I am hoping the Eco-Tank concept will finally put an end to the never-ending story of “the ink costs more than the printer” that seems to keep coming up when using a new printer. Not sure how many printers I have used since my first 24-pin Epson printer from back in the 80’s, but it has been more than a few. As “wet ink” printing came along to replace the ribbons on the pin printers, it was nice to have the quality of printing improve, but doggone those ink cartridges were always a sore spot. Obvious to most consumers is the fact that a teeny tank of INK probably doesn’t cost much to manufacture, so I sure felt taken-advantage-of whenever I plunked down the high cost of replacement cartridges. Believe me I tried the “hypodermic” method of getting off-brand ink and injecting it into ink cartridges, as well as the “guaranteed compatible” and refillable ink cartridges – and some of that worked and some didn’t but it was still a hassle to replace the printer ink. In the past few years, manufacturers seem to have added more and more “smart chips” and “code plates” to their ink cartridges to make it more and more difficult for consumers to have an open-market choice for replacement ink cartridges, and some will constantly pop up “nag screens” to remind you that you have deprived the manufacture of their after-market profits and suggest that if you don’t use the manufacturer’s OEM cartridges, creepy things “may” happen to your printer. Excuse me but I’m “old school” and still believe “If I buy it, I OWN it, and can do whatever I want with the device that I OWN!” …. OK let’s move on… I’ll bet I am not the only one that tried to “stretch out” an ink cartridge and get just a few more copies printed before going to the office supply store to pay for a new cartridge(s) and ended up on Sunday afternoon running out of BK/C/M/Y (take your pick) ink for an important print job that had to be turned in on Monday morning. Sometimes it just seemed easier to get a brand-new printer “on sale” for about the same price as a set of replacement BK/C/M/Y ink cartridges… what’s up with that? SMH… At the moment, I have another printer on the “monthly subscription plan” and that has worked out OK as far as not having to pay a lot at one time for a cartridge or full pack of ink cartridges, but some months I print a lot (like at least 50 and maybe more like 100) and some I do not, so keeping up with what plan I have and switching plans to save a few dollars is still kind of a hassle, and I feel like I am spending more for less sometimes if I don’t plan several months ahead to predict my printing needs and move around to the monthly plan that meets my needs. How do I know how many recipes my wife will print and how many school reports my son will print and how many student handouts I will be printing the month after next? No way. The plan I am on now makes it easy to “upgrade” the monthly plan (surprise) but doggone it is not so much fun when you try to “downgrade” the plan after a busy month. Like most folks, I usually settle for “more than I need” to be sure I don’t run out of copies, and there you go again I get the feeling that I’m spending more for less. To be fair it still beats having to run out to the local office supply store on a Sunday afternoon to buy an (expensive) ink cartridge, so excuse me I don’t want to sound like a Karen about it and just trying to share my own experience as a consumer. OK with all that said >> I have been seeing ads for Epson “Eco-Tank” printers for quite a while but just now decided to have a look and see if it was worthy of all the buzz. Since ink cartridges are my main issue, let me start with that. The Epson Eco-Tank printer comes with LOTS OF INK in BIG bottles that empty into separate BK/C/M/Y TANKS on the printer >> like filling up your gas tank >> and there are nice little WINDOWS so you can see how much BK/C/M/Y ink you have. OK that pretty much had me sold at that point EXCEPT I wnated to go online and see how much it would cost to buy more ink… So, sticking with Epson Official Ink – a BIG bottle of ink in any particular color costs about HALF of the price of a little bitty ink cartridge on other types of printers, and I would guess there is 3 to 4 times the ink in the Epson BK/C/M/Y bottles than in an ink cartridge. There you go that looks like a deal to me and the most “bang for the buck” for keeping the ink flowing that I have seen so far. Problem solved, mostly. PRINTER SETUP – easy peasy >> I really have to admit that I am used to going “step by step” in the unbelievably small print found on all the “quick setup guides” for new devices, and I got out my magnifying glass to get started with the Epson, but as soon as I downloaded the app on my phone (and there is the same app that you can download on computer) the app just took care of it and all I had to do was follow each step in the app and the setup completed without any problems. What I mean is that the app starts with “unpack the printer” and takes you all the way through to checking print head alignment and printing your first test page. Get the app FIRST, and no need to squint at the microfiche on the “quick start” flyer. NOICE! WIRELESS SETUP – OK on a home network that I have control over, it is easy to connect to my home wireless by choosing the network name and entering the password. We can print from desktop, laptop, Chromebook, and phones – all we must do is run the app on the devices to find and connect to the printer. Do it once, and it’s all set up. If you are wanting to set up at an office or school network, please be advised that you will probably need to get the support of your IT folks to give you (or help you) enter in the security key for the wireless router/hub that is in your area - at least this was the case on my school system. There is no “username” and “password” login on the Epson, it seems to want the security key from your office wireless network, so plan to get some help (if your IT folks are OK with personal printers connecting wirelessly to their network). Not an issue with me as I can use USB connection if I want to use the Epson at work. PRINT QUALITY – as good as any other printer I have tried in this price range. I have not tried printing on photo paper as that is not something I do very often, but printing color pages, flyers, copies of presentations >> all those are good quality. If you need “super crisp” colors and laser-printer DPI, then you will need to plop down at least a couple of hundred more dollars. OK one more little thing…. I made the mistake of assuming (or expecting) there would be a paper tray. There is NO paper tray on this printer – you can load about 30 pages in the back of the printer with about half the page inside the printer housing and about half the page sticking out the top. I do miss being able to load paper in a bottom paper tray like I have on some other printers in the same price range. When I chose this printer, of course I looked at the product pictures and I did not see ANY pictures from Epson that showed paper sticking up out of the back of the printer. There are lots of pictures of happy people with the printer on their desk and conveniently tucked in their living room bookcase but doggone not one of those product pictures shows paper sticking up at the back of the printer. I guess all those happy people sitting on the sofa and wanting the convenience of printing wirelessly from the comfort of their sofa will have to get up and put paper in the printer and then go back to sitting on the sofa and smiling and then they can print the recipe they found on Pinterest… it just kind of rubs me the wrong way but I’ll get over it. To be fair, there are more expensive Epsons that have the paper tray, and for about 1 Franklin more you can get an Eco-tank with a paper tray and a few other features. To wrap it up… if you are tired of the ink cartridge hassles, you can go with another manufacturer’s “subscription plan” which is OK for me AS LONG AS I am printing a good number of copies like 50 or more per month on a regular basis (actually that is not how it goes, but maybe for you?) or AS LONG AS I am not printing much at all and can stick with the "economy plan" >> OR you can go with the Eco-Tank line and still plan to order ink, but at a LOT LESS cost and a LOT LESS OFTEN. Peace and Stay Safe from Central Georgia!

The printer quit after one year...not what I would expect from Epson. At the beginning the quality was great, and then it started to print everything in blue, after contacting customer support and performing all the troubleshooting, it printed only in BW.

Better than HP, but not great for photo printing

For best print quality you must mess a bit with the printer's settings. Saw online reviews showing how to do this. The contrast and colors are a bit toned down out of the box. Removing one star for this, Otherwise, much better than the HP it replaced, constantly losing connection with my PC and smartphone.

This is an awesome printer/copier/scanner but was hard to set up. The unit should have come with the necessary software but you had to find out what you needed on your own. Other than that, after you get it set up, it's great.

    Easy Setup

This is a solid printer and getting it set up was a breeze. The print quality is pretty good and it can print close to the edges, which is a huge plus for me. I chose this printer for the refillable tanks -- they're easier to fill than changing a cartridge in my opinion, and I like that you can actually see how much ink is left. On the downside, the print speed is slow (5 pages per minute), but I am still rating it 5 stars because that was advertised and therefore expected.

I needed a new printer for my office and this fits the bill in every way. It’s footprint isn’t too much. It’s not small but it’s compact enough to fit comfortably on my desk. It’s lightweight and easy to move to other locations. I like the overall design of it as well. I come from the era of cartridges, small and large, so this ecotank idea is new to me. To be quite honest, I like it. I enjoy that I’m able to view the amount of ink I have available without having to wait for an app or the screen to notify me. The ink bottles were surprisingly larger than I expected, and that aided in how easy it was to fill the ink tanks. The worst part of the printer is the screen itself. It’s so small. It’s obv not necessary for the printer to run but geesh, is it TINY. There’s enough real estate for it to have been improved with a larger screen and would have been much more intuitive if it was touch screen, like others on the market. The buttons are so spaced out and it just seems to be a waste. The printing speed isn’t lighting fast but it’s just perfect for how I use the printer. I print just a couple documents/sheets every other day or so, so I’m not in need of a high speed printer. The images are surprisingly clear, sharp and color rendering is spot on for the most part. The scanner is better suited for documents only, not for colorful graphics or photos. Besides the power cord, there’s no other cords needed or used to connect the printer. I basically started using the printer straight out of the box, right after a quick setup. I found the app to be the best and quickest way to setup the printer. It takes you through each step in a few minutes. It’s was one of the easiest printer setups I’ve had experienced. Overall, it’s a great printer. I’m interested in seeing how long the ink actually last, and I’m happy with the refill price points. If you’re looking for a smaller foot print printer from the EcoTank line for general printing or your home office for light paperwork tasks, I highly recommend this one.

After having used this printer for only a short time I can honestly say that I am impressed with the technology and quality. Let me preface by saying that this is not a high end printer and if your expectations are that it can do it all then you might want to upgrade a few levels from here. With that said, this printer can handle most family and small business needs. It can print black and white, print color, scan, and copy. What it can't do is print on both sides or scan legal size documents. Also, it does not have an automated copy feeder, so you are limited to scanning just one page at a time. The best things about this printer are that it prints in good quality and it is easy to use. Out of the box there is some work to do and the best way to get started is to download the Epson Smart Panel app and go through the setup. It will take a half an hour or so to figure out how to set it up and to fill and calibrate the ink. Once you have that done and you've connected it to your internet, then you are ready to use it. Printing is easy and almost any computer or phone or tablet that is on the same wifi system can connect and print pretty easily. If you want to scan, you will need to download the software for your computer so that the printer will know where to save the scanned document. This is also relatively easy to figure out. The print quality and the scanning and copying capabilities are very good for a printer in this price range. I was impressed with the overall quality. Also, I have another eco tank printer and can say that with normal use (a few times a week), the ink does last for a couple years, so I am expecting the same from this printer. Overall, I'm very pleased with this printer given that my expectations were for a family friendly, low volume, entry level all in one printer. I would recommend it!

The Epson - EcoTank ET-2800 Wireless Color All-in-One Cartridge-Free Supertank Printer with Scan and Copy is a good all-around printer suitable for home use. Thanks to its Wi-Fi network connectivity, you can easily print to it from multiple devices on your home network. Unlike another popular printer brand that decided to eliminate USB connectivity altogether, Epson made the right decision to keep USB 3.0 connectivity, so you can still have it directly connected/wired to your legacy desktop PC. USB will also come in handy for the scanning functionality. The setup is simple, using the Epson smart panel app follow step by step instructions to get the printer setup on your Wi-Fi network. Since there are no ink cartridges, all you have to do is pour the ink from the four bottles into the tanks matching their respective colors. It’s pretty cool that you can physically see the actual ink levels on the front of the printer. I’ve had issues with ink drying up on older inkjet printers, hope Epson took care of that problem with this new cartridgeless design. It would truly be great if I didn’t have to worry about ink for the next 2 years with low to moderate printing volume. Print quality is pretty sharp even on regular paper. Speed is reasonable at 10ppm for black and half that for color. It would have been nice to have automatic duplex printing at this price point, but I guess not having to buy expensive ink cartridges a couple of times per year makes up for that. Time will tell if the EcoTank ink will be “stress-free” for two years. Epson also includes a generous 2 year warranty.

I have been a fan of the EcoTank family of printers since they first came out. The most costly part of a printer is the ink replacement due to the cartridge costs. This takes this out play by providing for large capacity ink tanks and large bottles of ink. All of this while not reducing the print quality. This model is smallest of the lineup and the most basic. It does not have a document feeder, a paper tray or automatic double sided printing capabilities. I have found that his is handy in a room where I don't have a lot of extra space. It works perfectly with a very nice scanner and fast printing. The colors are brilliant and it isn't extremely noisy. With the limited capabilities, I will use this printer for lower demand print jobs. It is always important consider the intended use when purchasing products. This is an excellent choice for a den, dorm room or a small office. I was not able to have Windows 10 automatically set up the printer, so I recommend using the drivers provided at Epson's website. I recommend this regardless because you always end up with the most recent drivers and software that will provide for all functionality. Epson also provides a phone application that works very well. I set up the printer with the phone application and it worked flawlessly. The application also provides for printer and scanner functionality. This is another great product from Epson.

    Amazing printer for its price

Using this to replace my Canon printer, and although the DPI is lower on this printer, it does the job. Just put the print setting on HIGH before proceeding. I love the refillable part of the printer compared to buying cartridges! Somehow this printer connects better than the ET-8550, but I love them both in regards of what they can do. It is a smidge confusing to setup(wireless). Here's how to do it so that you won't get confused. Step 1: Remove all the protective tape. Step 2: Fill it up with ink accordingly. Step 3: Load AT LEAST 3 sheets of printer paper. Step 4: START at your computer to prep the wireless setup; Google Epson's ET-2800's Setup for your computer (windows vs chromebook) and download that. Step 5: Follow the steps to download the proper drivers and to connect to your wifi. It'll then ask you to navigate the rest of the steps accordingly on your printer. And you're done after that!

Works great for color powerpoints. Inkjets are no where near quality of laser jets but it does its job. Started to have lines throughout - easily found maintenance tab, selected self clean, and it worked like new again. It came with all the ink and i still have plenty left. Definitely beats the garbage cheap HP ones I had purchased in the past!! Worth the investment.

This printer really has it all! First, lets talk about the ink capacity! The ink bottles hold a lot of liquid which translates into a lot of pages! And, compared to traditional ink cartridges, the ink bottles are much cheaper! The bottles included with the printer are listed to print approximately 3,600 black/white pages approximately 6,500 color pages! That is impressive! This printer has all the features you need in a multifunction printer! It scans, copies, prints and everything in between. The only frustrating part was getting it set up. It was mildly difficult to get it to connect to wifi and it took multiple attempts. You are supposed to be able to scan a QR code with the app available for download, but it wasn't that simple. After finally getting it to connect, I followed the instructions given on the printer screen/phone app. A firmware update was available so that took several minutes to complete. Once that was finished, I loaded the ink into the tanks on the printer. This step was easy and was performed without any mess! After updating it and installing the ink, I was ready to go! I tested the printer by printing out documents and pictures from my cell phone. It worked great! The print quality was great as well! My only complaint with this printer is the small screen. There are other models above this specific one, but I believe a larger screen should have been placed on this printer. It also will not do automatic double sided printing like the higher models, but that is not a deal breaker for me. I believe I will get a lot of good usage out of this printer and it will be quite awhile before I have to purchase more ink! All in all, this is a great printer!

This printer replaces my old brother all-in-one printer. So far, I have been happy with this guy. The quality of the prints is pretty good. The speed of printing is as fast as inkjet printer can get, I guess. Here are few more details based on my experience. The initial setup is easy but it takes time as you need to fill all the ink bottles into the tank and then wait for the ink to charge. It took me approximately 20 minutes to carry out all the required steps. I used the control panel on the printer for the setup (instead of the mobile app). And the set up process was intuitive an simple. After that I installed the required software on my windows 10 desktop and the app on my android mobile. I was able to connect to the printer from both devices. I would recommend that you download latest drivers and software from the website. I have used it to scan, print and copy regular documents and have found both black & white and color prints to be pretty good. I haven't tried printing photos yet. It allows printing on both sides which saves me some pages as well as helps the environment ;) The one thing that I didn't like about this printer is the paper feeder. The paper feeder is in the back and the sheets are outside and hence visible all the time. In my old brother printer, the paper feeder tray was in the front and paper was not visible. In my opinion that was a more convenient setup. Overall, it is a good printer which should server all needs of a home office. Other than the paper feeder design, it is easy to use and prints are of good quality.
