It's a printer that does what it sets out to do
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Epson XP-5200... I don't think I have ever been excited to get a printer before, but here I am writing a review about one. For some background I do not have a lot of prior experience with consumer printers. My spouse and I had an old HP Inkjet printer that "worked". Now that our family has changed so have our printing needs. We still need to print the occasional documents, but we want to print photos and scan important documents. Packaging: The printer comes in a sturdy box that is well padded. Included with the printer are a few documents about the printer, ink cartridges, and a power cable. You will need to buy a printer USB cable if you intend on not using the wireless capabilities of the printer. I also kind of expected to get a sample pack of photo paper. Maybe that is a thing of old that isn't included any more. Setup: Setup is super straight forward if you have ever had a printer before. The compartments are all the same as every other printer I have used in the past. The screen on the device, once powered on, will waqlk you through the set up process. I never opened the manual provided as the setup process included animations on how to perform the various set up tasks. The ink cartridges are simple enough to install as well. Wireless internet setup was easy to set up as well and the device downloaded the needed firmware updates fairly quickly (3-5 minutes tops). Impressions: Overall I was pretty impressed with the printers fit and finish. I tend to worry over the reliability of any technology, but the printer feels well contructed and sturdy. What I really liked the most was the soft close of the lid that allows access to the ink cartridge compartment. That gave me the sense that Epson designers took the time to add features such as a soft close lid not only for a user perception of quality, but to also help deter any undue stress to other components that may occur during harder impacts. I am used to having to slam shut my old HP when we had to shake up the toner. I also noticed that there were many access points to the various rollers in the printer that could make any jams more easily accessible. I did not encounter any jams during my first few prints. The user interface feels dated. It moves fairly quickly, but I would have to press the buttons on the device multiple times for it to register the input. I do like that I am not forced to use an app to control the printer. Anything you can think of needing to do or to address in settings is available within the display on the front of the printer. I only printed a few documents with this printer so I cannot say how the photo quality is. However, the documents that I printed came out exceptionally clear. The printing process took about the amount of time I would expect from a cartridge based system. The act of the cartridges moving during printing was quiter than I had expected it to be which was a nice change of pace. The rollers on my printer were really squeaky which was jolting considering my previous statement. Maybe I could figure out a way to lubricate them, but overall the printing process was not very noisy. Summary: I gave this 4/5 stars because while this is a welcomed addition to our office it does come with some quirks. The user interface is dated, button presses may require multiple attempts before they are registered, no photo paper sample pack (I'll get over it... soon), and the rollers are squeaky. My printer wont get used but maybe a couple of times a month so I can live with these quirks. I would also recommend it to my parents if they were in the market for a new printer. I think my friends would want something with a better user interface or would just use the printers at work.

Great Printer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used various printers in the past from ESPON and they have never disappointed me in the past and this hasn't either. The printers I used as a kid was an ESPON and it was very reliable. I remember back in the day it took 2 cartridges one for Color and one for Black. We would go through so much ink because maybe we used to use too much of the red vs Green and have to throw it out. These day's ink cartridges come in like each color so less waste and it helps the environment. Now ink is still fairly expensive but at least its better than before. Anyways This printer does away with that in favor or cartridges for each color as well. This printer also comes with a small LCD screen which makes it easy to set up with your wifi so you can print wirelessly from your phone and computer as well. Set up was a charm and pain free. You can fit 150 or so sheets inside the storage thing for paper and its enough to last you a while if you don't print a ton like I do. Nice to have ample size for it.

Faster than previous Epson XP, easy to use.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had a Canon pixma printer for past 5+ years, took 6 ink cartridge, printed nice photos but was super slow. It died a few of months back and I purchased the only printer on deal at that time "Epson XP-4105" (The XP-5200 is the latest generation model). As I have experience with both of them I will try to explain why 5200 is a much better buy over 4105 (or 4100). For some reason till recently the official page for XP-5200 was not up in US and it was taking me to Australian website. It is finally up and surprisingly it takes different ink cartridges vs the 4105. SO if you happen to have some in stock, I am not sure they will work. 4105 uses 212 where as 5200 uses 222. I went to a few local stores but did not find this ink (hopefully soon the will stock). The reason I recommend this over the older one is the speed of printing, it has improved greatly. I think 4105 was slightly faster than my dated Canon but 5200 is noticeably faster with out using a stop watch. Epson attributes the speed to "PrecisionCore™ Heat-Free Technology" but does not really explain what that is. I am guessing they upgraded the chip so it is able to process faster. Anyways, in my testing, their claim of fastest Epson yet is true and in fact is noticeable to a good extent. Another thing improved is the paper feeding location, in 4105 you have to put paper from top back position, where as in 5200 you have your tray in front so it can be kept in enclosed location with less clearance for height. The feeder is of better capacity as well (150 vs 100). There was a plastic jack to hold the top (like a car bonnet) in 4105 which comes in handy when you are changing ink, Epson removed that in 5200. I won't miss it greatly but it was good to have. Scanner appears to be same as 4105, so satisfactory. Copier is again faster than 4105. I had no issues connecting to it. It is all plug and play now days, connect your printer to your wifi and your devices are able to find it. I tested it from multiple windows devices & from Android Phone (using Epson print app) and all were able to see and print to it. You may find the old one on sale but if the difference is around $25 I will pick the XP-5200 over that because of the speed improvements.

Great printer but not cost effective.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good printer with lots of nice features and really good print quality. The time spent setting up and aligning the printer for maximum quality was exceedingly high though. The process is simplified if you use the Epson app (which is super awesome!!). The included ink is definitely for setup purposes only as you won't be left with much afterwards, so as the box suggests you'll need to pick up extra ink before even unboxing the machine. Since most printers nowadays will only work with brand and model specific ink, you're limited to having to spend a good amount on ink. Once you get past those few issues though, you'll have a pretty powerful machine at your fingertips. Literally, the amount of useful, intuitive, and fun things you can do with this printer using the very user friendly app is vast and interesting. I think the only thing I don't like about this printer is that it doesn't have a touch screen, buttons only. If you can look past those few cons, then you'll have a pretty solid and enjoyable addition to your tech.

Good small printer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm glad I bought this printer. It prints good and even faster than my previous Epson printer. Easy to operate. Wish it came with more instructions rather than having to go on online to get them But good buy.
