    Initially good, but stopped working

This scanner was great for the initial 100 scans. Then it "lost connection" with my computer. Uninstalled / reinstalled. Good for another 30 scans. Again lost connection, again uninstalled / reinstalled. Repeated this 4 times, each time getting less scans. Returned for credit. Might have been an issue on my end. I did like the interface, speed and quality, and would probably try again in the future.

In the past, like one month ago, Epson products worked with Linux distros. Epson has dropped that support. Would I recommend for a friend? Yes, as long as they are not using Linux.

    C'mon Epson

At this price point, the Epson V550 is hard to beat. It's easy to scan any size negative using the software to adjust size, and the quality of both film and scanned images is great. However, like another review discussed, the lack of quality control in this product is unacceptable. I've purchased a total of four of these scanners from Best Buy. I owned the first for about four months, scanned hundreds of slides and negatives, and about a thousand prints. Worked flawlessly with APS and produced a great finished product. My mom needed a scanner so I gave her mine with the intention of just buying another of the same model. And so the drama begins. Each one of the other three scanners had dust under the scanner bed. Yep, all three. Once you open the scanner lid and hit "preview" while in EPSON Scan, the light moves down and back up the scanner bed and one is clearly able to see all the specs of dust under the glass. On all three scanners, most of the debris was up at the top. I'm scanning too many negatives and photos to simply edit out the specs. Oh, and let us not forget, these were all right out of the box. Seriously, Epson, three scanners. Frankly, I'm willing to bet there are many who own this scanner who may have not noticed the issue. There are too many reviews on other websites for Epson not to acknowledge this quality control problem. If you are one of the lucky ones who were able to get your hands on a scanner that didn't suffer these issues, you have a great piece of equipment.

    Missing Digital Ice

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

While the scanner itself is great, I was sold on the idea of using Digital Ice for some old photos. What you don't read anywhere is that the Digital Ice, that's seems to be great sell point, is not for original photos. It can only be used on films, negatives, slides. I will say I don't regret the purchase as my photo scans look very good, and I really like the professional setting. I just think Epson should be more clear on the advertising for Digital Ice.

I really liked how it automatically creates individual JPEGs from multiple pictures on the scanner. A slight annoyance is that you have to double click on the icon after each scan. Not a big deal. The time it saves from the multi-picture scan is wonderful!

I am an experienced amateur photographer with a very large collection (over 40 years) of color slides, B&W negatives, and color prints. I am in the process of digitizing my collection. I am using the Epson V550 solely for converting my B&W negatives. It does an excellent job in all respects. Highly recommended for B&W negatives. I plan to use the Epson FotoFast scanner for my color prints (trial scans look good) and have been using the Powerslide 5000 automated scanner (Pacific Image Electronics) for my slides (exceptional results but steep learning curve). In my opinion, the Epson V550 would be too slow for a huge collection of slides or prints. However it should be adequate for smaller collections (several hundred).
