Couldn't set up either one for our parents due to certain set up items. Should have better info on the product before selling.

Facebook is a bad company. Only have this to see out of state family members. Basically only used on a daily basis to ask the weather...

For the last week I have been testing the new Facebook Portal mini with Alexa and while I like it, I really don't see a need for it. The Portal Mini is basically a home control device mixed with a video phone and smart speaker.  Some things I like are; how good the portal sounds when playing music on Spottily or video chatting with Facebook messenger. Also, the smart photo frame feature which streams the pictures of your favorite friends while ignoring all their posts and the excellent video call quality. When using it for home control, it does a good job at hearing your commands and performing your requested actions with just a few false activations. With all that being said, I like the idea of being able to video chat my friends without using my phone and love seeing my friends photos streaming on the screen, but I don't feel like I would use it that much.

The Facebook Portal Mini is a great device when used as a video chatting device. The camera is great, and the microphone system is awesome. During video chat, the camera can track faces and can zoom in - so basically you can keep is at a distance and walk around while talking to someone. This is super convenient when I’m doing some chores and I don’t have to carry my phone with me to keep me in focus. The experience is sweetened by the fact that the microphone can detect voice from afar, and does a pretty good job in reducing noise. Moreover, it has built-in Alexa integration. So if you’re already in the Amazon smart ecosystem, it’s a good bonus. The overall graphical interface, however, is not upto my expectation. The touch response does not feel spot on, and the lack of good library of apps is a big limitation. It supports multiple Facebook accounts, but figuring out who’s active, etc. is not very intuitive. The device is also a bit bulky, and the screen to body ratio is small, compared to the recent designs where we are getting rid of bezels. From privacy aspect, you are using a Facebook product, so I hope you know what you’re signing up for. There’s a physical 2-stage shutter to turn of the microphone or the microphone and camera. But there’s a lot of privacy related options, but you have to dig deeper to customize all these, and the clunky interface doesn’t help at all in that aspect. Overall, as a device to be used for video chatting via Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, it is fine. But as a smart display it’s not the best one. I hope Facebook puts out some updates in the future to mitigate some of the shortcomings.

Excellent Video Calls, Lots of Video Options

The Portal seems to be the least understood of the assistants. Sure, it is acknowleged as a unique device for video calls with its camera that follows the subject but it is always rated low in terms of video sources, apps, and integration. It is true that there are not many apps and the Alexa interface may not be up to Google Assistant standards, but the device, unlike Amazon's and Google's devices, will stream anything that can be streamed in a browser. This is because Portal includes a full browser, not a limited browder like Silk or no browser at all like Google. In my case, that includes Tablo, ATT Now, Netflix, etc. It even allows you to set up a shortcut on the Home page to start each one of these sources.

Don’t waste your money! It lasted for 4 months and then the apps no longer worked. The volume would adjust itself. It’s junk!
