An RPG classic completely remade from the ground up, some fans of the original may be turned off by the changes shown here. The combat and story have been completely redone, along with the world, really expanding on what fans know and love. It is a shame this only covers until the heroes leave Midgar, leaving the rest of the story for future games to expand.

15+ Years of Waiting. It delivers

The original was my favorite one of the series. Like many others who have waited years to finally see a final product, I was very skeptical to see if they could hone and imbue the original's mastery of narration and nostalgia. Although this isn't a finished product, it does deliver in setting up the arc in the right direction. I absolutely loved the new combat system even though I had huge concerns with changing the original turn based system. I look forward to hopefully a quicker Part 2 sequel. P.S. RIP to those loyal FF7 fans that passed away in the past 15 years hoping to see this game come out. That's how much FF7 means to its fans.

They nailed the graphics and ascetics. The story kept with the original with added content that made for an excellent story. I'm really looking forward for the next installment.

YES! I haven't played this game in 20 years and for me, it is as new and refreshing as the first time I played it. The combat system is revamped to an action style instead of a turn-based stop and select. The DIfficulty is up because you actually control the outcome based on your reactions. I rarely touch my inventory in most RPG's and this one had me relying on it many battles. Only thing I would change about this game is not having to wait for the rest of the chapters to come in the future. It's like watching a trilogy and waiting years between to get to the conclusion. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy or RPG's in general but it now!

If you loved the original, love RPGs in general, or even have never played it or heard of it before, this is still a must buy. The collection itself is gorgeous. It comes in a fairly heavy duty box and inside you have an incredible steelbook, a regular PS4 game case with reversible cover, a soundtrack, and an art book. Do note, as others have, this is only "part one" of Final Fantasy VII and not the entire original game. However, they have taken was was originally 2-5 hours depending on your play style and added so much insane content that it took me about 50 hours to get through it all with how I play. An instant classic and must own.

So far have found this a great game overall. Like the tweaks in the story and gameplay to make things different so it isn’t like just playing a prettier rehash of the original

Alright first of, they went all out on this game. You get to play and explore Midgar for most of the game. Do realize this is a 3 part game, so you won't be able to play the full game of the bat, definitely a downer but it makes up for the massive content there is. Part 1 is mostly Midgar, in the original you spent at most 3-4 hours before leaving the city this game goes past just that. First chapter is almost 2 hours. They expand alot on the character development between the group. As a fan of the original it's definitely worth it, yeah you can't play it all but do realize how much detail and playability they are adding. 5/5

An Amazing Retelling of a Legendary Game

The level of detail put into this remake is mind boggling. Every unique encounter, every music track, the dialogue and character interaction is near perfect. The soundtrack is so good it may be the best video game OST I have ever heard in my 20+ years of gaming. Every boss has it own track, or a variation of a track. Every area has a unique track. No matter where you go or what you fight in the game the music stands out and really pulls you in to the experience, be it happy, intense, mysterious, or sad. The story is already known to be one of the greatest in gaming, since 1997. And this is the same here, the story is amazing and ranges from exciting to heart breaking. This game takes it and heavily expands on it making you feel closer to the characters than ever before. In my opinion, it does a far better job than the original in the way you connect with the characters. Yes, there are changes to the original story. But this is a Remake and a sort of retelling, so im ok with it not being 100% the same. The new additions to the original story are for the most part interesting and creates a sense of mystery for even fans of the original. Combat for me was a perfect balance of action and menu based combat. The game is full action combat but with a tactical pause when you open the menu to cast spells or heal. The hybrid system works well IMO. The combat requires you to switch between your party members in battle to handle different enemy types or make use of a characters charged up ATB (used for their unique attacks or spells). It makes combat fun, varied, and keeps all the characters involved preventing it from getting boring. The materia system is used to augment gems onto your weapons and armor to setup a character anyway you want. Give them spells, or healing, status buffs,, or unique combat abilities. Each character can do anything, but is definitely best at things closer to their base unique abilities, I.E Tifa is a close range brawler so I didnt focus on putting too much magic on her and instead increased survivability, speed, and attack. It all works well and there are a bunch of different combinations, all viable. This game is part 1 of a multipart saga that expands greatly on the original. Therefore, this is not the entire ff7 story, this only covers roughly 10-20% of the original game, but greatly expanded that section into a full game thats about 40-50 hours long if you take your time and do everything (probably about 25-30 hours if you just do main story). I can't wait for part 2, as they ended this game off in a very satisfying and interesting way that leaves the future open to many possibilities. Here's hoping they do as great a job on the next part as this one. Even though im open to some retelling, i can't help but hope they still honor the original as much as they did in part 1 and not change TOO MUCH. The original is considered to be one of the best RPGS of all time for a reason.

    Super Unpolished But So Fun

This game is not 100% pretty. Not by a long shot. The main cast is beautifully rendered in modern graphics and look like they were ripped right out of Advent Children. Most—if not all—side characters and NPCs look like they were pulled out of Sonic '06; complete with the splotchy texture assets of a PlayStation 3 game. But the gameplay is. So. Absolutely. Perfect. Its engaging, it's exciting. If they had to skimp on either the action or the visuals, they put their priorities in the right places. Focus on a very pretty main cast and on fun gameplay. The rest can wait for future patches.

While I couldn't really get into the nuances of the new battle system (what can I say, I miss the turn based games of yore), the game was put together exceptionally well. The story was fun, albeit a little short. All together I spent about 40 hours playing the game (including completing all the side quests, but not going back to replay anything or find materia, items, etc). Character development was good and I felt myself getting attached to the characters all over again. Definitely a 5 star game, but it could've gotten a bonus star with a little extra polish to the battle system and some more stuff to do.

This remake is an excellent balance of nostalgia and new ideas, or at least expanded-on ideas. I'm a big fan of the original so I opted for the deluxe edition which included a cool little artbook, a neat steelbook case(my first ever getting one), a mini soundtrack which I really enjoy, although now I wish they had put more music on it, and the DLC summon materia which is pretty cool. Looks great, game play is fun (even if you are not very experienced with action RPG's like myself as I found it a bit challenging at times), and I would highly recommend to anybody that played the original as well as newbies!

So the long awaited first episode of the FFVII Remake is here...and it's every bit as good as any true fan hoped it would turn out, and maybe even a little bit more. And in some ways less, obviously, given the episodic nature. Outside of that complaint, and I admit I was worried about how they could make a full game out of Midgar alone, it is a joy to look at, to listen to, and most importantly, to play. If you were a fan of this in 1997 you owe it to yourself to experience it. Don't let naysayers put doubt in your mind; this is a lovingly recrafted telling of an absolute classic, and it shows.
