Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the Fire TV Recast 500GB OTA DVR's ease of use, reliable DVR and recording features, and seamless integration with Fire Stick devices. Many appreciate the excellent picture quality and the convenience of the channel guide. While some find the price a bit high and the number of tuners limited, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive for those seeking a convenient way to record and stream over-the-air television.

This thing was a waste of my time it will not connect to my outside antenna. It wants u to use an indoor antenna turned a certain way. The rest of setup was fair but took longer than expected.

Use this to replace your TiVo

After using Blu-Rays, Hulu, and digital movies, I found myself watching less live TV, which made it seem like a waste to pay for TiVo service. The instant I hooked up my recast, I cancelled TiVo and I don't plan on going back. This works seamlessly with your Fire TV (and I'd recommend getting one if you don't already have it). There's hardly any lag or loading time when pulling up "DVR" from your menu and starting to watch programs (I'm using a 4K Fire TV). There really aren't a whole lot of bells and whistles, but it certainly does all you need. Watch live TV, record upcoming shows, and record all shows in a series. The idea to have the hard drive connect wirelessly is a fantastic idea because this allows you to find the ideal location for reception rather than putting it next to the TV. Mine lives in the attic and I get 40 crystal clear channels. The menu is easy to navigate, the options are clear, the live picture loads in just a few seconds, and you can even use your voice to request it to record upcoming shows. Overall, it just works well and is very user friendly. There are a few things I wish it had, such as suggestions for shows and the ability to record sports programs from only my favorite teams. However, Amazon is constantly improving its products and websites, so I'm sure updates are forthcoming. Also, the minor improvements I've wanted aren't even enough to take away a star. Of course, the best part about this, there's no monthly fee to use it. You don't even need to be an Amazon Prime member. Which basically means this thing will pay for itself in less than a couple years. I was ecstatic to see that Amazon was taking a stab at DVRs. Now that it's here, watching live TV will never be the same for me.

    Set Up Was A Snap

I decided to "Cut the Cable" after refusing to continue to pay the ever rising cable costs. Fortunately, I live in Los Angeles and have a perfect line of sight for my antenna that I placed on the peak of my roof (Clearstream 2 Max). Set up was easy using the Fire app and the interface with the Fire Stick was seamless. On-screen navigation is easy and the picture quality rivals the FiOS picture I dumped.

    A solid DVR experience

    Posted .

I've been using the Recast as my new DVR system that replaced a Windows Media Center setup I had. This is also my first time using the Fire TV system as I previously used Roku devices. I was pleasantly surprised by this DVR. (I had also tried using Plex as a DVR, but I was disappointed by long buffering times on DVR-recorded content.) The first thing I noticed is that it is relatively snappy and fast. Viewing live TV / DVR content occurs quickly, and resumes quickly after fast-forwarding / rewinding. It is still not nearly as instant as a device that directly connects the antenna and TV (e.g., Tivo, Cable Box DVRs), but I found it to be quite tolerable. A "real" grid-style program guide is available, which is something that other solutions like Plex sometimes lack. Setting up recordings is relatively easy, but there are some quirks like the inability to specify to record a show only one one specific channel (this helps avoid recording dozens of reruns as the "record only new episodes" feature sometimes fails). The main issue I'm having is that it is more difficult that it should be to schedule and record shows that are happening in the future. As I'm starting fresh with this system, I immediately wanted to set up all of the series that I recorded on my previous DVR. However, you are limited to either manually scrolling through the program grid to find what you want, or relying on alexa to search via a voice command. A basic search function or even "wishlist" style search (that records anything that matches a particular keyword) would be nice. Further nice would be the ability to search by genre and other aspects. Most other DVRs have the ability to do that, Overall I'm pretty happy with this. I fully anticipated I might find it too glitchy and slow, but happily that was not the case.

Out of the box, this was setup in less then 10 minutes. Easy and straight forward to setup. Solid antenna connection, and I am seeing over 70 channels. What is great, is that I can use this to record all the programs from the Broadcast networks, instead of using the limited cloud DVR functions on other providers. Only downside is that it can only output TWO streams at one time, even though it can record 4.

    Restarts required ... often

I bought the 1Tb version of the Recast: I have to restart the Recast every 2 to 4 weeks even though it is plugged directly into my Internet router (Cat5) ... it loses connection with my network. Sometimes, it doesn't record due to "poor or weak TV signal", yet when I disconnect the antenna from the Recast and plug it into the TV and watch OTA TV the picture looks great. When it does record, the recording is sometimes pixilated. I'm in search of a better option
