Not as accurate as expected

Perhaps I am not operating it correctly but I am following the instructions (limited) provided. When I go to the gym, I select each activity I am doing but after 1 1/2 hours, it shows 36 minutes active! I've done intervals for 40 minutes and weights for an hour. That's active! Disappointed. Sleep information is interesting. Steps seem correct but not workouts.
