The Fitbit is a nice added addition to my overall health program. Whether counting steps, miles, heart rate etc. it lets me know how I am doing during the day.

Great product, just make sure you get the best buy protection. I've had to replace mine twice. My boys have both had to replace theirs as well.

Nice product. I wish I would have bought the next higher model. I use all of the features on this one. The next model had much nicer features.

Good product for the casual use and for its simplicity. Not accurate enough if you're more serious about your running or other sport activity.

For this price and usage it should be water resistant to at least 10m not somewhat splash resistant

Once I figures out how to use the fitbit, it was great. I can compare and keep track with friends. Still working on how to record my sleep.

Love the color was concerned it wouldn't match everything though. But the color is dark and really don't notice a big change from the black

Fitbit HR vs Jawbone UP Original
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Like many of you, I went through tons of reviews to compare the best products. So I decided to make a review of my own (posted under both products). The products I am comparing are the Fitbit Charge HR and the Jawbone UP (Original), so my review will be for both. I wanted something affordable or extra functional if I was going to pay more. I got the Jawbone UP for cheap, as it seems Bestbuy was getting rid of them during a fire sale. I ordered the Jawbone first, received it and it worked well for a week then it decided to stop working. After trying soft and hard resets I end up returning it. Of course I was hooked now to know what my activity levels were so I was on the lookout for something. About 2 weeks later I noticed Bestbuy was selling the Jawbone again on their website (limited quantities) so I ordered it and paid the extra $8 for a 2 year warranty. I had my eyes set on something bigger but for the $30 price tag it was hard to beat. This one worked much better, I’ve had it for 3 weeks and not a glitch yet, unlike the other one which needed a soft reset every couple of days.
So after doing research there were really 3 devices I was looking at. Jawbone UP, Charge HR, and Pebble. I went ahead and bought the HR to test out and compare with the Jawbone. I wear them both on the same wrist (left-nondominant) during this trial period. Here are my last 3 days of stats to compare; jawbone sleep will be most accurate as that is manually set while Fitbit is automatic:
Yesterday:
Jawbone Steps: 3011 Steps
Jawbone Sleep time: 8 hours 26 min
Fitbit Steps: 4635
Fitbit Sleep: 7 hours 58 min
Day Before that:
Jawbone Steps: 6314
Jawbone Sleep: 9 hours 3 min
Fitbit Steps: 9092
Fitbit Sleep: 8 hours 52 min
Day Before that:
Jawbone Steps: 4981
Jawbone Sleep: 7 hours 17 min
Fitbit Steps: 6509
Fitbit Sleep: 7 hours 1 min
I did a short walking test to measure the calibration. I walked 100 steps and started it as an activity on both. The results are:
Jawbone: 102 steps
Fitbit: 93 steps
Seems to contradict the full day results. Sensitivity can vary from non-arm moving exercises like shopping cart movements or carrying weights at the gym.
So it appears that Fitbit credits me 40-50% more steps for the full day but has an impressive sleep tracker to it considering it’s all automatic. Now let me go over the Pro’s/ Con’s:
Jawbone UP
Pros:
- Non-watch like. I’m big into real watches and this is more of an accessory than a watch that I can wear on either arm. Its not flashy, not bulky like some people are saying.
- Easy to remove. Just twist it and it goes on or right off. Real quick and convenient
- Battery life. I get about the full 9 – 10 battery life and that’s using the silent alarm throughout the week.
- Jawbone App is easy to use and has a great graphic interface. Really enjoy the detailed sleeping graph.
- Silent Alarm works great
Cons:
- Manual Sync. I really can’t count too much against this. I knew this was the feature when I bought it and obviously the newer ones (UP 24 and UP 3) aren’t manual but thought I would just share it.
- Limited functionality. I mostly track steps/sleep, but comparing it to the Fitbit I feel like I’m low on the options list. Keep in mind I’m speaking for the Original not the 24 which I have no experience with. Its basic, but gets the job done. So no stars against.
- Website. I haven’t seemed to easily find the website to login into, I don’t think it should be complicated. I google jawbone up, login, and does not provide any personal information. Where are my stats getting uploaded to? They should make this much more convenient to access from any PC. So I’ve never seen the Jawbone page for personal stats but I also haven’t extensively searched for it.
Fitbit Charge HR
Pros:
- LCD screen. Really nice to not pull out my phone to see where I’m at
- Auto sync. This is amazing! They provide a usb adapter to plug into your PC to wireless sync to your band when its nearby. This is perfect. The band is always syncing with my phone and then when I go home to my pc, I just load the webpage (very easy to find) and there are all my stats!
- Email notifications. Fitbit will send emails to notify you when your battery is low and motivate you to reach your goals or even congratulate you for reaching them. Pretty nice especially when it’s a busy day and I lose track.
- Tons of functionality. Steps, sleep, calories burned, # of flights of stairs, Heart Rate, Distance walked, clock, and even a semi-customizable time setup.
- Battery life. While the battery life is half that of the Jawbone, I’m still very impressed with it. I get about a full 5 days and with a constant lights flashing for your HR at the bottom of it 24hours/day I think that’s pretty good.
- Automatic sleep detection. This has been very impressive. I forget to set my Jawbone sometimes but as you can see its quite accurate.
- Customization. Fitbit website gives you lots of options to customize and tweak your band
Cons:
- While LCD is a pro, I also think it’s a con. Its too much of a half-watch. I love wearing real watches, but its almost a choice of wearing a watch or this band…I mean wearing both just seems like a little much. For those not big into watches then this is not an issue
- Band Clasp. It’s a little more hassle then I like to take the band off and on. Nothing that bad, but not that quick. Side note: I think I have small wrists for a guy, got the Large, and its probably a perfect fit if not a bit small so if you have average to above average wrists for a guy, go for the extra large.
- Double Tap. You are supposed to double tap the screen to turn it on. I find that I have to multi tap or tap extra hard to just get it on. Pretty much not worth it, I’ll just hit the side button once.
- Could not find a way on phone or website to pull up my individual activity stats. During the activity you can see stats on the band itself but when you complete the activity I haven’t found a way. Maybe someone can share some advice on this if there is a way.
Other Thoughts
- Heart Rate. The reviews here are pretty spot on about it. Seems like activity levels aren’t as accurate while resting HR is more on par. As I write this, my real HR is about 60 BPM. My fitbit says I am at 59. My intense activities show me at a rate of around 120, but its usually not consistent. Of course sweat and placement of the band make a difference.
- This (and the Jawbone) activity tracker should be water proof. Can’t be that difficult to make but its supposed to track all levels of activity and if it can’t get a little more than splashed on then neither are truly worth the money IMO.
- Phone calls. I don’t get many phone calls but it appears to alert me of a phone call a few seconds after the phone has been ringing. For some reason I was also expecting text alerts but that is not the case. I don’t have much experience with it so I put it here instead of Cons.
Final Thoughts
I’ve had the Charge for just over a week and the Fitbit for close to 3. I will probably be returning the Charge HR. It’s a great device, but neither one is water proof. The HR, while super functional, replaces the “watch” for me, while its not enough of a watch and costs about 5 times what I paid for the Jawbone. I am looking into the Pebble Time as it can use Jawbone UP software, waterproof (for my swimming), and is also a full functional watch. Apple watch is looking like a contender as well. If I wasn’t a big watch person and this was waterproof I would keep it in a heartbeat (pun intended). In the meantime I will stick with the Jawbone UP. I will post my final decision in an edit.

used to own a Fitbit charge hr, and send it to my father as a gift. And this time, it's BestBuy clearance sale, so I bought one. But unfortunately, there is something wrong with the battery, it can only last for one day, which is supposed to last for five days. So end up with returning it. Plan to get a Fitbit charge 2 or Fitbit Alta Hr instead.
