Too much of a good thing

Let me start by saying that I think this is a very good tracker. It does a lot of things, but in some cases it's just too much. Let's start with the positives: -It tells the time, you can READ texts, you get a caller ID, the HR monitor and it has GPS (which is actually something that I do not need at all). I find all of these to be nice, but most of the time I do not need much of it. Now, for the negatives: -The texts and caller ID are very delayed (that could be because of my phone honestly). The watch is TOO BIG! And I am a big guy, so it's not that I have small wrists. I cannot track my sleep with it because when I have it on I can't fall asleep. The battery life is not great, I'm getting about three days on it. I does not track my workout that great. I'm sure if I was an outdoor runner or a biker it would be more adequate, but it really is not for what I do. Now, all of these things being said, I will say that I prefer fitbit over the other trackers, and I have tried many of them. I just can not justify spending $250 on this when the fitbit charge HR is great and really does everything I need it to do including being $100 cheaper. I am going to return the Surge and get the Charge HR this week. In my eyes, this is a no-brainer.

    Terrible support and stupid techs

I purchased the Surge only for the wireless HR monitor and was happy to take the other features with. The last thing i needed was a clock. Everything was great until they released an update in Feb/Mar where after 15 seconds the screen defaults back to the watch clock screen. There is no way to stop this aside from being in activity tracking mode but that drains the battery. There have been hundreds of complaints on the Fitbit website message board yet Fitbit refuses to correct this terrible decision and their response is that there is nothing that can be done. So now I'm stuck with an overpriced watch. The company cares nothing about their customers and doesn't ask for feedback before a major update ruined a great product.

FB Surge: helps exercise-haters like me exercise

    Posted .

I hate to exercise. It's hard and I often don't see a single positive impact. I don't get the endorphin rush. I don't get a runner's high. I don't see love handles disappear. I hate to exercise! However, I'm a numbers guy. And this FitBit Surge helps me get my butt out the door to ride a bike, take a walk, or (gasp!) run. I'm actually wanting to go play golf to see how the Surge does. To the point: the Surge is all about numbers and I like this product because it does everything it's advertised to do. I like the interface on both the watch and the dashboard on my cell phone. I'm entering in the food I eat, working at getting in the cups of water, and even taking walks to "get my steps in" at work. I went with the Surge because I wanted the music control on my cell phone - was that worth an extra $100... maybe yes, maybe no. But today when I biked... wait for it... 10 miles! I didn't crash when I changed songs using my Surge watch instead of fumbling for my phone and trying to muck with it while riding an average of 9.43 MPH (yeah... more numbers that my watch told me about!) If you're like me and just hate to exercise but happen to be driven by numbers, then try this watch out. Hopefully you'll get the benefit out of it that I have.

Extremely comfortable to wear and super easy to setup. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the features and how accurate it is. I have also enjoyed how easily it synced with MyFitnessPal. It has made exercising intentional and added a bit of competition to it if your friends have them too

So far so good. Keeping motivated and really like the tracking of the food intake and calorie burn along with the gps tracking and sleep tracking. You can track everything online or with the app. Very convenient. The only thing I wish was that the band was a little bit longer.

    Pretty Great so far!

So far no complaints really. Overall the HR monitor is fairly accurate and within 1 beat when taking my pulse. The only complaints I have is that the HR monitor is a little touchy when working out. After a couple of days of experimenting with it though, I've found the perfect tightness and spot on my wrist for it to stay put and read my HR. It does take a little trial and error. The other complaint is that I wish it had a stopwatch on it.

Good features, not waterproof, limited app

This watch has pretty much everything: continuous heart monitor, GPS, long battery life, and a decent set of controls on the screen. If you were going to use an Apple watch you would only get about 24 hours of functionality. This watch has a simple screen in B&W so the battery lasts 5 days. The Strap starts to separate near the watch after a while. Under warranty you have to send in the whole watch to get it fixed. It's glued to the watch housing so you have to work to get it off. I bought a strap for $15.00 and replaced it myself, but it was hard to take off the strap and you have to be careful of the bluetooth antenna. Once it's off the other is easy to put on, but they should have made the strap more interchangeable since it isn't durable. The FitBit application doesn't give you a chart of your heartbeat. That was something that I really wanted to see and I could see when I had the discontinued and recalled Peak (by Intel). I don't like being stuck with the Fitbit application.

    Excellent Fitness Tracker

This product does it's job extremely well. It is important to remember it's function and that it's not meant to compare with your Citizen watch in your collection. My experience has been a pleasant one with the Surge. Heart rate monitor is very accurate, battery life good, interface is easy, and most importantly to me is that the software (apps/website) is excellent. The Surge is excellent. You won't regret buying it if you want a legitimate fitness tracking techology on your wrist.

First off I've used a polar with chest strap and fitbit charge HR. This watch was perfect for the price and for what it offered. It does great while running. Tracking your heart rate, distance, and calorie input and output is awesome. However when you are using equipment like the elliptical or doing push-ups, it routinely looses your heart rate (which is the main reason I bought this watch). Even after tightening and adjusting the location on my wrist, the watch still cannot track heart rate well if there is ANY bending of your wrist. Also the step counting is great, but doesn't work when say running or walking with a stroller. Don't get me wrong; it is great as an activity tracker, but it could be better. The fitbit program has some really great feature with syncing and checking you progress. As for entering and tracking anything but calories, it sucks. You have to use a separate program or app like "MyFitnessPal" and that means sometimes entering information more than once and bouncing back and forth between the two. Nobody wants to spend that much time on a device made to make things simpler. All in all it’s not a horrible watch. But you may want to look for a more expensive watch if you expect it to work as it says.

    Early Adopters Expect Mediocre Product

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought the Charge HR. I liked the small footprint and easy access functions. Then I ran the same course three days in a row. 1.83 miles, 2.1 and 2.3 miles. SAME COURSE! So expect huge variance in its calculations. I gave it to my son. I then bought a Fitbit Surge with GPS. I hope the accuracy would improve. It suggested the course was 3.38 miles. I biked over 10 miles, got credit for .61 miles. Ouch. Perhaps it's only for running. The website during setup had options for biking, working out, elliptical, etc. To be honest I didn't read all of the specs. The backlighting is poor, but otherwise better then the Fitbit Charge HR, albeit $100 more. Basically the technology is not mature enough. Basic features and accuracy is not very good. The appearance is also reminiscent of the calculator watches from 30 years ago (I guess Timex finally unloaded their 1975 inventory). If you need something to motivate you, you do not care about style - then these are the watches for you. Otherwise, if you can hold off 1-2 years when they resolve all of their issues, you will get a much better product and probably at a better price point. All that being said, setup for both watches went well, it does motivate me (even if accuracy is very speculative) and it holds a charge fairly well. I am off to run 1.83 miles, 2.1 or 2.3 miles whatever the random mileage generator comes up with.

East to use, works great, great interface, comprehensive software. This was everything I wanted in a smart watch / fitness tracker. In my opinion, this is the best on the market at a great price.

Clunky size, HR not very accurate

I liked my Fitbit Flex, so I thought the new Surge would be a great upgrade. My first impression is it's not as nice looking in person as it is in the the sales literature. It's quite frankly clunky looking. The heart rate measurements are all over the place when compared with other test apparatus I use. The battery life hasn't made it to the specified 7 day mark yet and I haven't used the GPS feature yet. I get about four days before it's complaining about a recharge. I also find the "treadmill run" and other exercise screens troublesome to get to and to terminate. Not really intuitive or easy. I also thought I "bricked" the Surge doing a firmware update. It took several power off attempts to get the screen to unlock. I probably will not attempt anymore fw updates because I don't want to render the Surge useless. My thinking now is the Fitbit Charge might have been a better purchase. We'll see as I get used to the Surge. I won't recommend this until I get a year of use.

    I like it, but...

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First of all, I do like it. It is pretty cool on what it can do. My three star rating is not necessarily what it does do..but it's short falls. 1. the non replacable wristband is made of some sort of silicone and irritates the heck out of my wrist. I really hate wearing it. 2. The program is not very accurate as far as calories. No way am I burning 3800 calories sitting on my butt half the day. 3. The pedometer is sketchy. 4. The online software is supposed to interact with other 'partner programs' like runkeeper. It doesn't. BOOOOO Outside of these issues, I really like it. It motivates me to exercise. It tracks things well (outside of the shortfalls). Not going to lie to you, it is not stylish at all. The only reason I bought this over the apple watch was for the GPS functionality..which on this..is pretty awesome. I like going for a bike ride and tracking without having to bring my phone.

This is a great tool to keep you honest about your fitness goals. This tracker truly tracks everything and a must have for the fitness nut or somebody looking to start being more physical and live a healthier life style. Yes a bit on the pricey side but if it keeps you active it's money well spent. Highly recommended it.

I purchased my Fitbit Surge from Best Buy and received it this past Wednesday. I initially fell in love with it but 1.5 days after I purchased it, the touchscreen started scrolling uncontrollably and now it is frozen at the home screen. All I can do is switch between the clock and the run screen. Thankfully, it is still tracking and synching my activity, but I am essentially wearing a $250 watch. I contacted Fitbit directly and they are sending me a new one. WONDERFUL customer service!! I have changed my mind, I straight up *LOVE IT*!!

Only have a few issues, non of which are of any real concern. The worst is that my skin can get irritated due to sticking to my skin. I wish that the band was replaceable. I did have an issue where the notifications were no longer appearing on my watch, but I am not sure if that was due to my iPhone or the watch.

This really is a great device. I love the fact that you can see it in all kinds of light or non light. I didn't think that I would like it because it's not a color smartwatch but iI have it on my wrist all the time. It really keeps me aware of what I am doing and lets me adjust what I am doing. The HR monitor is great feature it allows me to track and control my HR. The sleep tracker really allows me to make sure that I am sleeping. I did manage to crack the screen, hopefully they can replace it.

I returned it after 2 days, my #1 complaint was the battery life was dismal when using the GPS which was less than accurate, i went out with a full charge and less than an hour later it was at 40%, same thing the next day but the GPS was way off from the first day. The charging cord is less than ideal, the only reason I rated it 2 stars is the heart monitor feature was really nice but I'm not paying $250 for a heart monitor, also on a sunny day with sunglasses on it's almost impossible to see the screen.

    The Good And Bad

I've had my Surge for 2 years. The original lasted about 11 months before the band tore. Fitbit sent me a replacement that wouldn't hold charge; so, they sent me another which is what I currently use. Now this one holds charge for a maximum of 3 days and I don't used the HR monitor or Bluetooth. Also, the band is beginning to bubble. I do like using the GPS to run, but I won't be purchasing another Fitbit. The customer service is nice, but the product needs improvement.
