love the features. My only concern is that, even with the large band, I cannot wear it as high up on my arm as required by the directions for vigorous exercise, and there is no larger band. I am not a big man,and my forearms are not big

I just bought it two days ago and I love it. Measures heart rate accurately ( I compare it to my pulse oximeter). The only flaw is that it does not measure running on the treadmill correctly. Mine was off by over half an mile.

I've been fairly happy with the Surge until today. I took it off the charger on the way to work. The screen was blank. 1 Hour on the charger later it booted and said it was fully charged. I took it off the charger and the screen turns off. I repeated this in another half hour. I intend to go see the Geek Squad tonight to get it replaced. I think the battery has failed. I'm concerned that I won't have a working tracker tonight since they are out of stock online and in the store. This is disappointing.

    Good Watch, Awful Band

First off, I am on my third watch already in 10 months, and soon I will be on my fourth. They were replaced under my 1-year warranty at no charge to me. For all 3 watches without fail within 1-2 months the band begins to bubble up and off of the watch centerpiece. This looks pretty bad from an aesthetic perspective and eventually it causes the band to fall off the watch centerpiece completely, making it useless as a watch. I use it normally as a fitness watch (it gets sweaty), and wear it everywhere except the shower or when I swim or go in the ocean. A watch such as this should have the durability for this normal wear. This being said, I did like this watch. I had only owned older Garmin GPS running watches before this, and was attracted to the idea of having a wrist-based heart rate (no chest strap!) and tracking my sleep especially. I really like the sleep tracking it provided, and the steps per day and automatically picking up activities (going for a walk/playing soccer/etc.). I also liked the customer service I have received from Fitbit. However, after wearing a chest strap for my heart rate while running, I know that the heart rate from this watch is between 20-50 bpm lower than what my heart rate should be while running. The heart rate seems to work fine during normal sedentary activity and walking, but the real reason I wanted to use it was for more intense exercise. Very disappointing, it makes the heart rate useless for me to analyze my effort on runs. The GPS also is not as good as my old Garmins, but accurate enough to still work just fine. I also started doing some triathlons, and unfortunately this watch is not good for either swimming or biking. Swimming is to be expected since I knew this watch was not waterproof, but I was disappointed it could not track my rides on my bike. The GPS simply cannot keep up, it picks up half of the distance I ride. In all, this watch is good for what I originally got it for - an all around basic health tracker with GPS functionality for running, albeit a disappointing heart rate monitor. But there is NO WAY I will get a new one, or even another fitbit once my warranty is up soon. The band is complete garbage and makes a decent watch garbage as well within a couple months. Very disappointed with this, and astonished at how predictable the band bubbling up is. Now onto my third replacement warranty watch ...and then I will most likely get a Garmin Forerunner 735XT if I can.

    Best of both worlds

Since I get most of my cardio exercise by running, I really wanted a fitness tracker that had the most accurate distance tracking. While most of the low to mid range priced trackers do not have true on-board GPS , the Surge does. Don't be fooled by those trackers that are GPS-enabled, which link to your smart phone to use its GPS capability. I prefer to leave my phone at home when I run, which is why wanted a tracker with an integrated GPS was very important to me.

    Disappointing. Continuously won't sync

I got the surge as a present (Dec 2015) and completely appreciated it, but after using it found the connectivity, interface and features are disappointing at best. When I go to sync it won't. The only thing I've found to fix this is to uninstall and install the Windows 10 FitBit app, which is also a joke. The Windows 10 app is a pain to use with limited functionality and dumbed down duplo icons made for children. I wanted to see my exercise data and couldn't. Instead I had to go out to the web page to get any real information and even then it isn't easy to find and use. On the plus side the heartbeat monitor only broke once and was fixed by resetting and has been good since. Also, I like the summary at the end of an exercise program. Oddly though it seems to count steps while in the biking exercise program as those days I hit 10K steps and other than biking for two hours did very little walking. Furthermore, I can't figure out how to get back to the summary page once I've clicked it done. It is probably user error, but would be wonderful to be able to review all summaries. Lastly, it is unclear to me what is on the watch and what has been removed. If it says the last sync was June 8th does that mean that everything before was removed from the watch? What if there are some things I don't want to sync? It would be nice to be able to choose. Also, how many exercise programs will it save? In summary I just wish it would be easier to use and get at the data that is on the watch without the hassle of FitBits user interfaces. A USB connection to the data files stored on the watch viewable with windows explorer.

Bought this to help keep track of my steps and running. When running on the treadmill and verifying the surge they were pretty close. I hooked this up with the fitbit scale and using them together is great since the app keeps track of everything for you.

    Good solid watch but dated

Last year when I purchased this watch it was competing with the Basis Peak and the MS Band 1 for my needs. There were pro's and con's to all these watches but what won me over on the Surge was the consistent calorie counts and HR monitor. (MS Band kept losing my HR). Additionally you could instigate the recording of an exercise (Basis Peak would not do that back then). The Fitbit software is well maintained and the firmware has been very steady for me. But the issues I had with the watch were: No Apple HealthKit (or Google Fit) integration. Very bulky design. Only has Text and Call notification. The band causes a rash because it does not breath. Case in point; I've since replaced this with a Garmin vivoactive HR and my rash has almost completely healed even though the band material is very similar. The reason I exchanged the watch was because the battery began to die about 2 months after the 1 year warranty expired. So if you get this watch definitely get the BB warranty with it -- you won't be sorry. But given the other more complete fitness devices out there I can't recommend this watch anymore.

Got this with the many gift cards I got for Christmas, and it's been one issue after another. From the rash I got after wearing it for a week, to the synchronization issues, to now the band cracking, I am very disappointed in the overall quality of the product. Also disappointed with the lack of compatability with the Nike+ app I have been using for years on my smartphone. To be fair, I knew this before I purchased the device, but was hoping Fitbit would address it at some point. Given that Apple just announced a forthcoming Nike+ watch, I guess I shouldn't hold my breath. On the positive side, it doesn't look as clunky on my large wrist as I feared. The app is pretty good, but not being able to sync data with the Nike+ app is frustrating. I could probably live with that, but the aforementioned durability issues are a deal-breaker. Way overpriced given the questionable quality.

Took a while to get set up. Will not update with Windows 10 or Galaxy Tab S2 so had to use spouse's iPad. After that, touch screen locked up but was an easy fix. With the whining out of the way, the Surge is working just fine. Like being able to track sleep patterns. 1/2 way through my first day, it is showing that I need to get more exercise on a daily basis. Can't wait to see how it does when I play tennis (play about 3 times a week), or work in the yard.

For the functions, I would use as long as it connected to my IPAD and/or computer there was no problem has all the features I needed. I just could not get passed the display during the day no problem but very dim. At night forget it even with the backlight it was terrible. Customer help forget that as well (Not Best Buy, the Manufacturer). For these reasons I returned the item..

Now, you may be offended. How can this watch be only for serious athletes? Look at the YouTube reviews. Look at all the hate this watch gets. Everyone says its ugly. No color. Too big. Not sexy. Etc etc. Well, this watch was designed for SERIOUS people who care ONLY about performance. If you want to be part of the beautiful people's club then get an Apple watch or the Fitbit Blaze. Enough said.

Well, Just received my in the mail today, and the touch screen didn't work. Called FITBIT and they are working with me in getting a replacement but first I have to send it back. The customer service rep wasn't able to tell me an exact timeline just that they will send the new one overnight. I gave it a two star just to be fair, the product looks and feels great just being able to use the rest of it would be nice. Will update review once I get a working one, who knows when that will be.

    GPS Problems & orther problems

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

There are mountains where I hike and walk. When I start the GPS on Surge it starts ok but as I go close to mountains (which are not very tall) the GPS fails and the watch stops recording Distance. The GPS may start up when I am on flat ground but it may not restart at all too (never know). So, when GPS stops working, my Distance stops too even though I am still walking/hiking-I am losing mileage on these walks/hikes. When I check walk/hike on Fitbit website, there is a straight line from where the GPS lost connection and where it reconnects. If it doesn't reconnect then it is a straight line. Last long walk, I restarted Surge watch 3 times and the distance was totally off. GPS failed on all three restarts. Also, shirt sleeve changes screen at times. Sleep function is questionable for me (maybe I just move too much during sleep# but other fitbits #one & force) work ok because I start the sleep and end the sleep function.

Dont Waste your time with the Fitbit Surge

This is my first Chance at using a Fitbit I was super excited about this product (Fitbit Surge)t and couldn't wait to start using it. I love Tech, and I was always interested in smart watches as well. After I brought this item home. I set I up, downloaded the app. and started to setup my account. I noticed that my Calories burned seemed very high. I took 600 Steps with it and burned over 1200 calories. I went online to find a fix for it. I thought maybe the Surge was set in a default Demo mode. where you can see everything working on it with little to no effort. no such thing on the Fitbit Surge. I called the 1800 number 2 times first time we got disconnected, 2nd time. I was told to change my Height, and change my time zone. and that MIGHT help REDUCE the number of calories I was over on. Of course it didn't. I was also told they new about this issue, and they are working on trying to patch it. They expected it to be out at the end of February! Completely unsat for a company, who is trying to sell products that count calories. I was told they were going to send me over to talk to their engineers. But they were in a meeting. Asked to speak to a supervisor, but what a surprise also in a meeting. Fitbit has horrible costumer service. For me this product was a complete waste of time. if your interested in this product still, be very careful, and make sure that this product has been properly "Patched" before you buy it. It will just frustrate you if its not.

The surge pulse accuracy is quite good, I was a little concerned as to how accurate it would be. I have compared it to my manual pulse reading while resting and working out.
