I do not recommend this watch for serious runners. For all day fitness tracking it is great, but the GPS signal is poor. I used it for a half marathon and lost 3 miles.

I was very unhappy with the display brightness of the Surge. It should have an option to vary how bright you want it to display. Even in the dark it was difficult to read! It was also very "old school" looking technology, kind of like in the old Atari age! For the price of this product you should be getting at least the display colors and options like the Fitbit Blaze.

The good - I love the functionality of the Surge. It was ready to go right out of the box. It has all the features I was looking for, especially the HR and alternate exercise function. The bad - I'm 5'0 tall with tiny wrists. I bought the small - which basically means that the band is shorter. I have it on the 3rd to the last notch. The length of the unit is wider than my wrist and it's very, very conspicuous. I tried sleeping with it on, but there was just too much bulk to be comfortable. Not sure if I will be keeping the Surge or exchanging it for a Charge HR. I would recommend it to a friend regardless... a very tall, large-framed friend.

    Surge in Disappointment

    Posted .

I originally purchased the FitBit Surge in February of 2015 and also purchased the 2 year extended warranty from Best Buy. I wear my surge daily and run and sleep with it when I can. I purchased it for the GPS tracking, replacing one of the cheaper Garmin watches I used to have. I loved the step tracking, heart rate monitoring, and GPS tracking on my runs. I especially love the Fitbit app on my iPhone which is my go to fitness app and easily syncs with the fitbit surge. The fitbit was also nice for reading text messages while in work meetings so it wasn't so obvious that I was distracted. I only took it off for showers and to charge. By February of 2016, my wristband was starting to flake apart, the GPS was not picking up a signal as quick as it once had, and the battery would not last more than a day if I used it for a run so I took it back to Best Buy and they let me have a new watch off the shelf because of their awesome extended warranty I purchased with the original watch. I decided not to purchase a new warranty with this second watch because I decided if the watch failed me again, I would buy a different watch next time. Well here it is February 2017, almost one year to the date and after my 5 mile run the other day, my wristband came completely off and I can no longer wear my surge. The GPS and battery were much better with this watch and it would still be in use today if I could wear the watch, but now I'm out of a watch and have decided to go to the new Apple Watch where I can change out the wrist band when necessary. I'm a little bummed because I'll have to find a new app that does everything my fitbit app did with my new watch. I would not buy the surge again. At $250 a watch, my wrist band should never fall apart and it happened twice, each time after one year of use. If you decide to go with this watch, definitely put in the extra money for the extended warranty because you will need it if you wear your watch on a daily basis.

I have been using this for about 2 months now and I love it. It's easy to use and link to your phone. I like that it tracks my workouts without me having to tell it that I am working out. Really helps with motivation! My only complaint would be that I would say that I have small wrists, and I am at the 2nd to last notch on my band, so a Large would have maybe been better.

Great Product Providing Great Feedback on Activity

We ordered the Fitbit Surge to monitor daily activity as well as running activity. We have really enjoyed it. It provides great feedback on activity for the day as well as pacing for the run. My wife really likes the fact that it feeds other apps she has as well. We do wish it had a interval timer for training, but we have overcome that little disappointment.

    Poor battery - to Mediocre

Battery rated at 5 days. With no GPS use mine died in 1 consistently. Definitely has some good things going for it. First the GPS acquires quickly (in SF) my Garmin could take 10 minutes vs. the Fitbit 1 to 2 min. Overall UI = fail. There's nothing intuitive about how to navigate the menus. Finally the poor battery performance lead me to return the Surge. too bad a leaked and hyped "superwatch" fitbit's own words, was mediocre.

    Surge On!

I've only had the Surge for about a week and haven't had a chance to use it during a workout. However, setup was easy & intuitive. The features are easy to use and intuitive. The feature I have used constantly is the heart rate monitor. I have needed something like this to verify that my heart has been racing at times and it has. I wish the heart rate would stay in view on the watch but, it keeps going back to the time. I can however see my heart rate constantly on my iPhone FitBit app. It has been invaluable during this week+. I will follow-up with more detailed of a review when I have exercised with the Surge on.

Needs Improvement - here's the bad and some good

Bulky and uncomfortable to wear especially at night to track sleep. The sleep tracking is better on the old fitbit force where you manually set it to sleep tracking mode. The thickness of the bumped up side of the bevel bangs into everything. The display is dull and difficult to read notifications. Glitchy setup to get it synced with phone. The online dashboard doesn't track workouts. The Fitbit support is responsive and they seem to genuinely want to help. The constant heart rate monitor is excellent. The incoming text notification is a great idea just disappears too quickly. You can only get texts from one server so you can't get Google hangouts and SMS phone texts making you choose. Had it for about 2 weeks, still can't get tunes control function to work.

I love the FitBit Surge, great information if you are interested in your health. My only problem is that it has to be charged every 3 days and it doesn't have an outlet charger, just charging on the computer.

The fit bit was recommended through a friend. I am extremely happy with it. I like that you are able to change settings according to the type of exercise you are doing. I like that you can connect with friends and have challenges. And the GPS, I don't have to have my phone on me to monitor.

Great watch for keeping track of HR and calories. I use it 5x a week to record workouts. The text message function has stopped working due to the Fitbit app update. Really is a killing point when you compare it to other fitness watches. If I had known the app update would stop the receiving I would not have bought the watch.

Love this product! Exactly what I want/ need from a fitness tracker. I debated on giving this 5 stars, but the screen display stopped me. Fitbit surge has all the wonderful features, but in the sunlight you can hardly see display. I wish the screen had a white background instead of black. Just to help me see the watch better. The best thing about Fitbit is the app. Being able to challenge people and being motivated is fantastic with the app. I've used Fitbit for a few years and the surge is definetly worth the money.
