Great smartwatch experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Fossil Gen 5 watch is a great companion to your smartphone. In fact, it can replace many of the most frequent things you do without the need to have your phone nearby at all. Messaging and calls without having to have your phone near at all is very freeing. If you haven't used a smartwatch previously, it definitely can feel like you're in the future by taking a call on the watch. That feeling is amplified with a smartwatch that has LTE built in. Beyond the simple freedom of having LTE on the smartwatch, this watch looks and feels great. It handles most things you'd expect a smartwatch to do, and I think it does them pretty well. Fitness tracking seems to be accurate and easy to use. Step tracking- which is what I imagine is the most common task people would like a smartwatch to handle - works very well and is easy to keep an eye on in the Google Fit app. If you haven't used a watch based on Google's Wear OS before, I think they handle notifications better than other watch platforms. They're informative and the Gen 5 makes them very easy to interact with. When it comes to taking calls, the speaker quality seems very good, and those I spoke to said they had no trouble hearing me clearly. Though, you'll likely want to hold your watch fairly close while speaking. The biggest limitation of this watch would probably be battery life. It's pretty decent to where I can get around a day and a half with pretty heavy use. This includes the always-on display option, tilt-to-wake gesture, NFC and "Ok Google" detection turned on. The watch has some battery modes that can dramatically increase the battery life by disabling a few features. These modes will disable a few features to help squeeze more battery life out, and they do a good job of extending the battery life if you find yourself out with the battery getting low. You can even have these modes changed based on the battery level. I personally don't mind just charging the watch each night, but others may not. If you're looking for in a fully-featured smartwatch, including the ability to take calls without your phone, this should definitely be on your radar. Pros: Great looking, lightweight, lots of features, smart battery modes, LTE connectivity Cons: Battery life may not work for some (though I think it does pretty well, and the battery modes can help extend it)

Great sleek smart watch
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Fossil Get 5 LTE! Out of the box, you get the watch, magnetic charger (that requires a USB A charging block) and an instruction booklet. Setting up the watch is also quite fast and will require Wear OS app. Within 10 minutes, i was up and running with the watch. Connecting the watch to my Verizon plan was also quite a breeze through the Wear OS app. Just follow the steps provided and you can create an additional line for the watch on your Verizon wireless plan. Once that is done, you can use Number Share feature in the verizonwireless.com web app to connect your mobile phone’s number to the watch (this way you get all calls forwarded to the phone as well). I wasn’t able to use the My Verizon app to do this part for Number Share as that feature was either missing or not easily accessible. Onto performance, the watch itself does not lag and all notifications come in concurrently with my phone. I haven’t noticed any lag or performance hits thus far! Battery life on the other hand is not so great… I barely manage to eek out 22 hours while in the Daily mode (probably because i get a lot of notifications throughout the day). If using the Extended mode (which limits some functionality such as always having the watch face on), then you can get more life out of your battery. Since i like having the screen on, i usually leave it in the Daily mode and charge it every night. The watch is able to make and receive calls! The microphone is quite exceptional, as people on the other end always hear me pretty crystal clear. The speaker on the watch is quite tiny and it produces enough sound when holding to your face; without it being close to your face, you won’t be able to hear people on the other end when making calls. So far, the watch has been great and is quite speedy! If there is anything i could change, it would be for better battery life if i want to go multiple days in the Daily mode! Highly recommend this for anyone that is looking for a stylish smart watch!

Major upgrade to the Fossil smartwatch line
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Finally, after the Google acquisition of Fossil to have a competitor against other well-established manufacturers in the smartwatch market, they have produced a beautifully designed smart watch in the new Fossil Gen 5 LTE watch. I have been waiting years for an update to the Google Wear OS line of watches that sets itself apart from other manufacturers because, in my opinion, the competition has really been lacking in that department which, in turn, the consumer ultimately suffers. With the new Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch, I think they are finally on the right track to take on the competition. After charging and during the initial set up of the watch, you will be prompted to download the Google Wear OS application through the Google Play Store on your smart device (phone or tablet) and sync your Google account to the watch via a Bluetooth connection. Once the watch is set up, which only took a few minutes, it goes through a short tutorial on how to use the main functions of the watch by swiping in all direction and using the three side buttons; you can also see this tutorial through their website which was useful to see how the watch functions prior to actual use. You are prompted to set up the LTE connection through the Wear OS application which will sync to the Verizon network using number share if you have a compatible Android phone with the My Verizon Services application on the Verizon network. If you do not, you are still able to use the watch on a Bluetooth connection but not a standalone device on an LTE network. I have always preferred the look of a round watch face over the square face, however, I think many people, including myself, would argue the functionality of a square face smartwatch tends to function better and have more usable screen space for certain purposes including a larger viewable area and easier to type. The viewable, round and bright 1.28” AMOLED watch face is large enough to read and type, even for someone like me who has terrible up-close vision. You can adjust the brightness automatically or manually and even set it up to detect daylight to make it easier to view when the sun is out. The scrolling between screens is very responsive and fluid. You can adjust the font size to a certain point, and, for some, that might still not be large enough when trying to read text messages, emails, etc. The smartwatch screen options, mostly accessible through the watch itself and through the Wear OS app, are customizable including the faces, what is displayed on the screen, the order certain shortcuts may appear while scrolling, quick buttons for workouts, and much more. The notifications on the watch, including texts, emails, news, etc. is almost simultaneous to them showing up on your phone. You can customize notifications including sounds, vibration and what notifications appear on your watch. You can also password protect the watch if you prefer. The battery lasts more than a day with moderate to heavy use. You can adjust the battery usage using the Smart Battery Modes in settings including a multi-day extended mode and toggling the always-on display. I have always made it a habit to charge my smartwatch overnight so that has never been an issue. The battery charges using the included magnetic cable and will charge almost fully in about an hour. There is 8GB of built-in memory that you can use to store media or additional apps. In my opinion, one of the most impressive functions of the watch is the fitness tracking, specifically during a workout. During setup, you have the option to set fitness goals which would equate to heart points in the Google Fit app on your smartphone profile. I have done everything from running, bike riding, stationary bike and strength training using the watch. I was surprised during the strength training when the watch somehow knew, or made an inclined guess, as to which type of exercise I was performing. The watch learned from my input if the first guess was incorrect and adjust for the next time I made a certain motion. I was able to keep track of the number, weight and time of my reps during the workout and at the end it uploaded those results to my profile in the Google Fit application. You can also opt for coaching and a voice assistant through the Fit app. On top of all that, you can have the watch and app track your steps, heart rate, weight, sleep, etc. With the Fossil Gen 5 LTE, the first stand alone LTE watch in the Google OS market, I believe they set a strong foundation to build on and believe what they currently have going for them is a huge step in the right direction to compete with others in the smartwatch market. It takes some time to figure out everything the Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch is capable of but, in my opinion, more customizable options is typically better when it comes to technology; you can customize this watch to be as simple or as complex as you wish depending on your needs. It is also nice to know with the LTE option you have another way to communicate and get notifications if you leave your phone behind.

Great Phone Free Experience
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Fossil Gen 5 LTE Smartwatch! I have had the Fossil 5 LTE Smartwatch for about a week now, this is not my 1st smartwatch, but it will be my daily wear. The LTE is a great option for a smartwatch, using the number share program lets you use your existing line on your watch and not have to worry about carrying around a phone. With us always needing to be reached, being able to leave my phone in the truck is a great option when you are out on the lake, playing golf or just on a run. When making and receiving phone calls the speaker is great and only a couple of times did someone tell me there was a lot of background noise, also the use of a Bluetooth headset is an option. The Gen 5 uses the Google wear app to monitor the watch, it is kind of limited compared to other brands, it might be better for Fossil to develop its own apps like Samsung, to stay in competition with the other smartwatches. I seem to look for third party apps to fill the void from using strictly google wear. One such app that is a real benefit for me is called Lefty, which will switch the watch face around for a left-handed person to wear on their right wrist. This puts the controls are on the outside of the watch face, like you would have for a right-handed person. Use of the watch is straight forward, tapping, swiping, or using the spinning crown makes getting to your apps and notifications a breeze. Swipe to the right and there is google assistant. Swipe up and there are your past notifications. Swipe to the left and there are your tiles. And Swipe down for your settings. There are hundreds of apps to download to your watch and with the amount of storage, downloading them should not be an issue. Listening to music or a book on tape, can be done by the speaker on the watch or by connected Bluetooth headphones/ear buds. The built-in speaker is ok for listening to music, I don’t think we would try to rate it compared to a lot of the high-end headphones, but it’s easy and doesn’t take up any space. You can also connect the watch to some of those high-end headphones and listen to your hearts content. I am looking forward to my up coming vacation, where I will really enjoy the navigation and hiking apps. I am hoping that they will help from getting lost and I will be able to follow my digital bread crumbs out. . Basic Specs 1.28-inch Amoled Display 1GB of RAM; 8GB of Storage 310mAh Battery with Magnetic Charging Sensors: Accelerometer Altimeter Ambient light Compass Gyroscope Off-body IR PPG heart rate GPS Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.2 LE Cellular NFC Wi-Fi

Good Watch
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was on the verge of finishing this review and then my Dad tried the watch and made me realize some observations making me re-write for the general audience. This review is not for the tech nerds. I hope to make my words user-friendly. If you have never tried a smart watch like this before and are afraid that it might be too technical for you and that you will have to pay extra each month through your phone provider to keep it working, please stop worrying. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY EXTRA TO HAVE FUN WITH THIS WATCH. I am sharing this up first as my Dad (retired more than 13 years back) had that as his biggest concern. Yes, if you Numbershare (activate phone functionalities where this basically replaces your phone) you will need to pay a little over 10 dollars a month to Verizon. But, please read on if you don't want to do it. For the new smartwatch enthusiast: you just need to sync this watch with your phone via bluetooth and you will not have to take your phone out of your pocket when you go out. You can receive calls and messages and text from the watch itself. The first step is to download the Google Wear OS from the Playstore in your phone. It is really easy and the app will immediately detect your phone. Just follow the instructions and you will be ready to enjoy the watch in no time. This will monitor your heart rate and more importantly, when you swipe the screen, it will take you to Google Fit. It is really easy to configure Google Fit and you can measure your steps, heart rate, calorie burn, work-out numbers etc. If the lockdowns have got you down this device may inspire you to measure your steps and count your calorie burn quite efficiently. The watch looks splendid. The display is AMOLED and 1.28 inches in diameter.. The display configuration can be changed to suit your predilection and that is an easy process as well. Battery life is multi-day alright. I charged this yesterday morning and it still has a lot of juice left 36 hours later. The charging disc is stylish. Here are the rudimentary numbers from the company: Display: 1.28" AMOLED / 416 x 416 / 328ppi Case: 45 mm, Stainless Steel Strap: 22 mm, Silicone (interchangeable) Supported Carrier: Verizon Wireless Compatibility: Use the Google WearOS app on your phone with Android™ 6.0+ (excluding Go edition). NumberShare is required to activate service on Fossil Gen 5 LTE. • Lifestyle: Always on Display with thousands of watch faces to personalize your look and always see the time. Hundreds of apps from assistant to fitness, payments, music, social, news, games, stop watches, and more. With Cellular connectivity, a swimproof design and charging in less than an hour, it’s perfect for all your activities. • Health: Automatically tracks activity goals, steps, heart rate, and more. Activity modes with GPS keep you on track with your distance and path. Advanced sensors provide the data to power all your health and fitness apps. • Utility: Leave your phone behind and stay connected for notifications, calls, texts, apps and automatic time, time zone and calendar syncing. When someone calls your phone's number, your watch will ring and you can take the call even when your phone is miles away. Optimize your battery life with Smart Battery Modes. • Preloaded Apps: Agenda, Alarm, Calendar, Cardiogram, Contacts, Enhanced Phone Dialer App, Facer, Google Assistant, Google Fit (Workout, Heart Rate, Goals, Breathe), Google Pay™, Google Play Store, Nike Run Club, Noonlight, Smart Battery Modes, Spotify, Stopwatch, Timer, Translate • Battery: 24 Hr + multi day Extended Mode **Varies based on usage and after updates install**. USB cable with magnetic charger snaps to rings on watch case back and spins 360 degrees for ease of use. 50 minutes to reach 80%. I would strongly recommend this watch to anybody who is in the market for a smart wearable.

Stylish, responsive, convenient, decent battery
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Fossil Gen 5 LTE smartwatch in black with a silicone strap has a simple but stylish look. It’s large enough to read the screen easily but isn’t overly bulky. The buttons are functional without sticking out too far. Overall, the aesthetic seems like it would fit in just as well at work, the gym, out on a run, etc. That said, I really like that the strap can be swapped out. Fossil offers a variety of other 22 mm bands, in stainless steel, leather, and nylon… so it’s easy to customize as needed. I use an Android phone and have owned watches with Wear OS (Google’s wearable device operating system) before, so I was already familiar with the user experience. The watch doesn’t do everything a smartphone can, but Wear OS has LOTS of apps available. That means there are many things you can do right from your wrist. I’ve been using my Gen 5 LTE to stay on top of my calendar, check weather, headlines, and stock quotes, access my grocery list and other notes, and tapping to pay at stores. Wear OS also has Google Assistant built-in, so I’ve been using that to control our smart-home connected lights, thermostat, and home alarm system. The Gen 5 LTE experience has been smooth and responsive for me while doing all those things. Activating the Fossil Gen 5 LTE and getting it added to my Verizon account was straightforward, but did require about a half hour to tap through all the options, enter passwords, etc. It was all done using the Wear OS app on my phone. Verizon has a feature called Number Share, so while I see in my account that watch has its own phone number, it rings when my phone rings, and when I place a call from the watch, the outgoing caller ID is the same as my phone. Be sure to check with Verizon to find out what it will cost to add the watch to your account – your existing plan selection and location will determine the monthly charge and per line taxes/fees. This is my first smart watch with a built-in cellular connection, and it’s been very convenient that it works independently of my phone. You might be wondering why you’d leave your phone at home since we’re all so used to having ours with us everywhere. I’ll say that as a runner, it’s been super exciting to head out the door without having to think about where to clip, stash, or strap my phone. Pockets are a no-go, and my phone is awkwardly large for a hip/waist packs option. Armband phone holders aren’t my thing either, so I’ve mostly been running without my phone. Now, with the Gen 5 LTE, I can track my run pace/route/distance using Google Fit (or one of the other available Wear OS fitness apps) and still have the option to answer an important call from family, friends, work, etc. From a personal safety standpoint, it’s nice to know that I could call for help if something happened. I’ve also been running errands and making other quick trips without taking my phone with me. It’s nice to have one less thing to grab on the way out the door. The speakerphone on the watch is surprisingly useful for such a small device. I can hear callers easily in most environments, and the microphone usually picks my voice up clearly. I’ve been told that it can be hard to hear me when my wrist is too far from my face, however. That doesn’t mean I need to talk directly into my wrist awkwardly, but I do make sure to keep my arm somewhat elevated while using the phone feature… either up on a desktop, counter, or with my arms folded across my chest. Battery life on the Fossil Gen 5 LTE has been good enough that I can get a full day’s use, but do need to recharge it every day. I could use the extended battery mode to stretch it to more than one day of use between charges, but that mode disables some background features. Overall, I think the Fossil Get 5 LTE is a stylish and convenient smart watch. I’m enjoying it and can recommend it with just a couple of caveats: Battery life requires daily recharging to keep all features active, and the Cellular features only work with Verizon, so you’re beholden to them for service as well as their plan fees, surcharges, etc.
