I am fairly familiar with technology and this one took me awhile to get the hand of. Not exactly user friendly.

Bought as a compliment to my Apple Watch-What a mistake? The app is clunky, the watch has problems staying connected. Hard to download apps. Overall that is why people buy apple-for the user experience. This was a waste of time and the only thing this watch delivered was frustration. Returning next week. Buy Apple.

The Fossil Gen 5 smartwatch is the best Android based smartwatch I've yet to use. It's got a well above average build quality that feels like it's a solid piece of kit to wear on your wrist. It's a bit on the larger side but I have big wrists so that's a bonus for me, just be aware if you have smaller wrists it may look a bit awkward. I really appreciate the all steel construction and it's looks rather handsome when I paired it with a dark brown leather watch band. That's another win for this watch, you can use any standard 22mm watch band if the steel link one is not to your liking. I prefer leather for my watch bands as it tends to feel and look better. Also on the hardware front the crown is one of the better implementations I've seen on an Android watch. As to the smart features. Once you download the wear app to your phone you'll pair it. Right out of the box there was an update waiting that took about 20 minutes to download and install. After the installation there was a bit of bloat ware that some may find useful. I paired it with my Pixel 4XL and because I was feeling adventurous my iPhone 11 Pro. Functionality with the iPhone was very limited but that's to be expected with Apple's walled garden approach. Paired with my Pixel though this thing really shined. A good solid connection to the phone. Notifications were, for lack of a better word, pleasent. i could go through my email and text messages with ease. The operating system felt rather responsive and I have not had any issues using the watch for a week now. There are a few things that caused me to take off one star. First was the bloat ware. i do not like it when a company forces software and services on you. Another was the charger. There are two small pins that line up with to rail on the back of the watch and I worry about what several months of use will do. Will it affect the charging of the watch down the road? I don't know. I wish Fossil had gone with an inductive charging solution. Also, for the first couple of days battery life was dismal. After a couple of days battery life improved dramatically and it's now lasting a full day with charge to spare. If you're an Android use and want a quality smartwatch experience then this Fossil Gen 5 will serve you well

This watch is too much work. Love the overall look and the notifications were decent, but many notifications were missed and sometimes when the phone would disconnect, I would have to reset the watch to get it to reconnect. Also, the battery life was not as advertised.

Besides some connectivity issues, overall a good watch and easy to use

I think this is a great watch, it's comfortable, stylish, beautiful screen, etc... I love that it basically has everything (GPS, Wifi, NFC) but this is at the end of the day a WearOS watch. Not that WearOS is all bad; the notifications are great, the apps that do work, work fine. The battery controls are nice, so you can decide if you want all the features available all the time, or if you prefer the watch to last as long as possible. With everything turned on (GPS, Wifi, NFC), the battery struggled to last all day. If you leave it to default "all day" wear, it will last all day, but may not last through the night. Then you have extended mode, which will help it last a couple of days. Or you can set a custom mode, which will let you balance the features you want with battery life. The one thing that keeps me from wanting to replace my Fitbit Versa 2 with this watch is the lack of good fitness tracking. Google Fit is almost laughable, there is no native sleep tracking, and the workout detection is a bit unreliable. I also found the heartrate tracking to often disagree with Fitbit (usually would give me a higher heartrate), but it also doesn't have continuous HR detection (default is every 5 mins, but I think you can set it to every 1 min, at the cost of battery life). If you want a good companion to your smartphone, and not too concerned with accurate fitness tracking, this is a great watch. If you want something more Fitness focused, and less smartphone oriented, go for a Fitbit.

after a week this watch quit working. Charged in the morning, died by early afternoon and would not charge again until late, late in evening.
