Get a hybrid smartwatch instead
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really wanted to like this watch. I was drawn in by the promise of a ton of smart features on my wrist, and it didn't deliver. It's a fine watch design-wise, Fossil makes great-looking watches and this lives up to their expectations. But unfortunately for Fossil, this watch is limited by the software of Wear OS, and it's pretty bad (even years later). The biggest issue to me was the battery. At first I was making it through a full day with the watch, and I had to turn off a lot of the convenience features (tilt the screen to wake it, "ok google" detection, etc) in order to stretch battery life to barely 24 hours. Even so, sometimes I'd get random extreme battery drain, so it was more of a "best case: 24 hours" battery life, which just got exhausting to constantly monitor. Now I'll admit, I used this watch every day for 1.5 years, and it held up. Battery life didn't get worse that I noticed (not that it could get much worse), this watch took normal wear and tear without breaking a sweat, and software stayed consistent (glitchy and laggy always, but at least it didn't get worse). Also, Google Assistant has apparently been broken on Wear OS for years. I don't know that I ever had a successful prompt and response with Google Assistant on this watch. I'd either get an error, or it wouldn't hear me, or, most often, it would lag so much that I'd have to wait for it to initialize after I hit the prompt button, then speak, then wait 10 more seconds for it to process, then I'd finally get my answer (usually an error anyway). I stopped using Google Assistant almost immediately, so that's a major draw of this watch gone. I just found out about hybrid watches like a month ago, 1.5 years into wearing this watch, and I switched to the Fossil Hybrid HR immediately. Hybrid smartwatches strip out what I would call the "unnecessary" features of a smartwatch (microphone and speaker, built-in apps, GPS, massive screen) and that allows them to focus on what I'd consider most core features of what I want on a smartwatch (reading notifications, music control, activity tracking, sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring), all in a much better looking package, plus a battery life of 2+ weeks, and a much lower price tag. Plus, the software is built by Fossil instead of Google, which I never would have thought would be a good thing but it is. This review isn't about hybrids so I'll stop there but just saying, check out your other options before purchasing a Wear OS watch. Lastly, Google has rolled out Wear OS 3.0, which is a massive overhaul to the OS built in collaboration with Fitbit and Samsung, the two other major players in the Android smartwatch game. That's amazing news for Android smartwatches, but this watch, the Fossil Gen 5, won't get that update. You'll be stuck with the glitchy, laggy OS forever. In 2022 there is zero reason to buy this watch. If you want a basic, stylish smartwatch, get a hybrid. If you want the best full-on smartwatch, get an Apple Watch (hurts me to say as a Google fan but it's true). And if you want a great Android smartwatch instead, get one that has Wear OS 3. This watch doesn't win any category anymore.

Do not buy this
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a Pixel 4XL owner that's heavy in the Google ecosystem I really wanted to give Wear OS a try. Sadly, this is hot garbage. The software is super minimal but somehow managed to be frustratingly slow. The battery life is horrible. After a full charge at 9am, it was dead before 5pm. Just don't buy this. It's the worst with no redeeming qualities.

Not great
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Planning to return the watch.... Constantly disconnects from my Android phone even though its right next to it, batteries dies around 8 pm each night (take it off the charger around 6 am) and only use it for notifications for text messages and work calendar items. All other notifications are off and battery is still really bad.

Didn’t work for my iPhone Xmax
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I returned the same day I purchased because it disconnected twice and got frozen once. I had to turn it off before it started working again. I don’t think it’s good idea if you have an iPhone.

The worst battery ever
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for my boyfriend and the first day it died within THREE HOURS. We let it charge up again and decided to turn literally everything off(WiFi, mic, etc) and even still it died in 5 hours while my Apple Watch was still at 85%. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful watch and it was really smooth running but god the battery was despicable. I’m really surprised fossil would use such a terrible battery. Best Buy was cool about it though and let me return it luckily.

Loved the WearOS, but battery is no good
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I loved this watch - easy to set up, links to apps, additional apps for activity etc. But I played a round of golf using it to show distance, and the battery died before I finished the round (started at 96%). If this is the performance when it's new, what will it be like in 2 years? Sadly had to return the Gen-5 watch and go back to my old friend Pebble Time :-(

Really wanted to love this but...
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Battery life was horrible for me, even after the 70 updates. Performance was also sluggish. Perhaps I got a defective one, but google search lete know I wasn't the only one with these issues. Really wanted to love this watch as it would be nice to have a android watch that works as well as the apple watch, without having to just use iOS.

Waste of Money
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought as a compliment to my Apple Watch-What a mistake? The app is clunky, the watch has problems staying connected. Hard to download apps. Overall that is why people buy apple-for the user experience. This was a waste of time and the only thing this watch delivered was frustration. Returning next week. Buy Apple.

Really difficult watch
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This watch is too much work. Love the overall look and the notifications were decent, but many notifications were missed and sometimes when the phone would disconnect, I would have to reset the watch to get it to reconnect. Also, the battery life was not as advertised.

Look elsewhere
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this based on the reviews, however, coming from an Apple watch and trying out a watch to pair with my Pixel, this is more or less total garbage. The interface is painfully slow, the notifications for 2FA, etc require interaction with the phone as well. Battery life was ok... Watch often crashed and was a pain to setup. Unfortunately, wearOS has a LONG way to go, and the snapdragon processor is so far behind Apple's own Silicon, this is almost a joke. Despite being the best in an area of aweful smart watches, this is still total garbage.

Don't buy
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Difficulty charging, more than half the time I put it on the charger it doesn't connect properly so it isn't charged when I need it. Even when it clicks in place it still doesn't charge sometimes! The circular sensors on the watch also pop out.

Disappointing purchase
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Broke after 21 days, just would not come on at all. It was almost as if it had never been charged or the battery died but the battery can’t be changed, it’s a part of the device. Looks great and made from great material worked perfectly but then died. Extremely disappointing!

Speaker is horrible! I returned it right after i opened it. Word of advice: Stick with watches that are made for your phone.
