The hose coming out of the back and angling up to turn another corner to go out of the window means about an extra foot away from the wall. This is our first air conditioner and we thought "portable" meant we could move it from room to room if we wanted to, but that's really not practical. We should probably have just gotten a window air conditioner instead. We did get a window model for our other purpose. Installation isn't any harder, and being up off the floor, it's a whole lot easier to deal with.
