The heart rate still reads a pulse even when the watch is not on your wrist and the altimeter is constantly inaccurate and reading - I was several hundred feet below sea level or 65,000 in the sky As a result, I took this product back. It did nice integration with my phone and notifications but I puchased it for heart rate and GPS functions...which both failed.

    Best device out there

I have tried almost every device out there, devices from Polar, Fitbit, Motorola, Samsung, Misfit, Basis, Microsoft and other Garmin devices. This one out does them all in almost every area. Some of the other devices may do a few things as well as the Fenix 3 but this devices does everything well not just a few things like the others. I put off buying this one because of the price, and tried to get by with using cheaper devices and always thinking I wish this one did this or why doesn't this work right. I even went so far as to have a device on each wrist to try to get everything I wanted. After trying the others I finally decided to take the plunge and spend the money on the Fenix 3 HR and wow am I glad I did. You don't have to be a fitness nut to enjoy this watch, it looks great and functions flawlessly. I am in my late 50's so my heavy workout days are behind me but I still love all the things this watch does even if I don't use them all. If you are a fitness nut this thing does it all. Might feel a little big at first but you get used to it and the bezel makes it look like a nice watch not just a fitness device. Pros: Does fitness better than anything out there, very reliable and accurate. Tons of features that will keep you interested in the watch instead of getting bored with. Looks great and built tough. HRM is very good for normal activiities and also will pair with an external ANT+ HRM for very active weight training sessions. Cons: Wish the phone app was a little better, not quite as good as some of the others but it is getting better as they continuously make improvements. Display is not super bright indoors but it is fine, outdoors this thing is ridiculously easy to see, amazing. If you can afford it don't waste time with the others, get this one. I tried the Garmin Forerunner 235, Vivoactive HR and other Vivo products and they were okay but felt like a plastic toy compared to this. If you find yourself looking at a device thinking well I will give it a try even if it doesn't have everything you think you want, I should be able to get by. Don't get by just get this one.

Useless, too expensive. I could not get a GPS signal while hiking. It was ridicules. Garmin keeps coming up with the same watch but more expensive.

    Great watch

This smart watch is far more than I expected. The ability to change watch faces is fun but to follow my heart rate though out a complete workout without the use of a chest strap is remarkable. The real reason for choosing this watch was the golf function. I have compared it to my laser range finder and to other GPS golf devices. It appears to be spot on. The ability to follow my scores is also great. The crystal is the hardest on the market allowing it to take some abuse. The battery lasts for greater than a week evening using the GPS for 2 rounds of golf each week.

I was super excited when I got the Garmin Fenix 3 HR. To find out that the GPS did not acquire signal. Contacted Garmin and they said my unit was defective. GPS firmware was at 0.0.0. Payed way to much for that to happen.

Very good, but save room for music

I have tried almost every device out there, both Garmin and other devices. If you want the most accurate wrist heart rate and the ability to use it recording almost every imaginable sport, than this is it. Yes it is expensive, but the value is there. This has gone through Warrior Dashes in the mud, running in the rain, swimming (have my own pool), and tracking my daily activities too. I am in my 50's so my heavy workout days are behind me but I still love all the things this watch does even if I don't use them all. Some of the things I do use it for include Mens Ice Hockey, bike riding, counting my steps, and most importantly connecting to myfitnesspal. Unlike other brands, Garmin allows you to connect to other aps with ease, such as myfitnesspal, mapmyworkouts, underarmour, and so many more running and biking aps. Pros: Best fitness watch period, very reliable and accurate. Tons of free watch faces all for free! Useful aps like Minutecast (tells you how many minutes until rain) Looks great and built tough. Cons: Display. Unless you are in bright sunlight or in a dark area using the backlight it is hard to read No music storage. I would love to run without my phone but they haven't added music storage to the watch yet. This and the display are what keep it from getting 5 stars.

    Best watch ever!!!

Had the Garmin 405CX for about 5yrs. Been looking around for a new one that I can swim with and has the heart rate monitor within the watch. The bonus of all the other features - sleep monitor, calorie/food tracker, steps counter, leader boards, custom faces, etc., etc., etc., too many to name. Best of all awesome battery life. All in all - best watch ever. It never comes off my wrist!!!

    Best sport watch

If you need more than a sport watch, this might not be the best choice. It lacks rich eco apps, like Apple Watch does. But if you're looking for a sport watch, including GPS, HR, etc. This is the best I have seen. The battery life is also awesome. Personally I also think it looks better than Apple Watch.

    Simply Amazing

This product is simply amazing! It was a toss-up between an Apple Watch and the Garmin Fenix 3 HR. I'm glad I bought the Garmin instead of the Apple Watch as the Garmin has more attributes which I need it for rather than listening to music on my wrist, or talking to someone using the watch. I simply use it to exercise, track my sleep, steps, track my bicycling and runs.

    Good so far

I have been waiting for this watch to be in the store I gave up my 630 for this and I'm satisfied so far. I found that the higher your heart rate goes the watch isn't accurate when using the watch without the chest strap. Actually it is useless once you the heart goes over 100bpm. It has been on point as far as the resting heart rate and sleeping even walking. I compared this while I was hook up to monitor in a doctors office during a checkup and once my heart rate went above 100bpm it became way off from what the monitor was reading but was a beat or two off up until my heart rate went above 100bpm.

Fenix 3 takes the GPS watch to the next level

I upgraded to the Fenix 3 HR Sapphire when the battery life of my original Fenix purchased in 2012 degraded to 6 hours in full GPS mode. The price was painful but I'm really pleased with this new device. The battery lasted over 12 hours during an ultra marathon in full GPS mode and still had about 25% life remaining. Very accurate GPS. And the technology in this watch is a huge upgrade from the original Fenix.

    Frustrating Device

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've owned this device for over one year so feel qualified to comment. I'm a road cyclist and ride over 4K miles per year. This is not a cheap device yet often times behaves like one. It freezes and needs to sit until the battery dies. After a charge it works again. It will often randomly pause during a ride. There are constant updates from Garmin and it's not unusual for my settings to be changed afterward. I'm fairly tech savvy and I have given up on this watch and could never recommend it.

We appreciate you taking time to review the fēnix 3. The device locking up and no longer responding is unusual. This may occur if there is corruption on the device. We would recommend uploading any data from the watch to Garmin Connect and then deleting the Activities, Courses, and NewFiles folders on the device. If the device continues to lock up and not respond Garmin Customer Care would love to help you troubleshoot your device. Please visit www.garmin.com/support to find phone and email contact information for the Product Support teams. Thanks again for the review. -JFH Garmin

I really love this watch, I’ve had it over a year and it has been with me through several races. The gps is top notch and the large display makes it easy to periodically check your pace and time during a run.

As a smart watch is an awful option

As a smart watch is an awful option, notifications are not customisable , 3rd party apps do not work properly, they say that Garmin SO has problems to sync. Android App has problems as well, syncing only works with Garmin Connect app, plus this since the last update the audible notifications are not working any longer which limits this device. I think this is a too expensive watch for what you get For tracking exercise works just ok, but there are other cheaper options
