This is correct! The Forerunner 10 is not designed to count or tally steps. It is a GPS-only watch, so distance and pace are calculated by your GPS signal. This means that not only will the watch not count steps, but it also will not track distance or pace when being used indoors or on stationary training equipment such as a treadmill or elliptical. Other Forerunner and vívo models offer step counting and/or built-in hardware that allow for indoor training. -JPKGarmin

I liked the watch overall--simple to use and connected to the computer easily to download information. But there were times that I had to wait over 20 minutes for GPS to work. I compared this with other running apps on my phone, and there was absolutely no problem with the apps and GPS. I can't wait 5-10 minutes or longer when going for a run for GPS to work. I even updated it, hoping that would help. It did not. That made me return the watch. I would never recommend it until the GPS is worked out.

Thank you for the review of the Forerunner 10. The device is designed to acquire a satellite signal within just a few minutes. It is not typical for the Forerunner 10 to take over 20 minutes to acquire GPS. There could be environment factors that could prevent the device from acquiring a signal. Examples include heavy tree cover or being surrounded by tall buildings. If the device software is up to date, Garmin Customer Care would love to help. You can find phone and email contact information for Product Support at www.garmin.com/support. Thank you again for taking time to write a review. -JFH Garmin

    Higher tech gadget for runners

Gadget itself is fine for the right person. I need a simpler cross between a pedometer and a fitness monitor and this isn't it. GPS aspect is fun but expect to spend for that.

I like all of the features of the Forerunner 10 except one - it doesn't work well if running indoors at home or the gym. It needs to have an uninstructed 'view' of the sky to keep accurate track of your distance.

Thank you for your feedback. This device is definitely great for a beginner as it is one of our basic models. The battery life is 5 weeks in watch mode; 5 hours in training models. This watch is also great for shorter distances, or fast runners and someone who needs basic data, such as distance, time and pace. ~QKO Garmin

I ordered this for the Rock n Roll half marathon in New Orleans. I was so excited to not use my iPhone for GPS since it died mid race last year. The watch is a great size for girls. I have small wrists and it fit great, It seems to hold a charge relatively well, but that could be because the stupid GPS was never able to lock onto my location. It searched for several minutes while I was in the starting coral and I attempted it again twice during my first mile and it never locked in. In the middle of the city of New Orleans? So this over priced watch is going to be returned. That said, it seems to work well for most so maybe I got a defective one. Unfortunately this was my first Garmin purchase and I now have very little faith in the products. Pros: Small size/fits my tiny wrist Holds charge Easy set up and use Cons: The GPS never worked and that was the only reason I bought it.

It's very easy to use. Tracks everything that you would need while running, minus the hear rate part. I didn't really care about that so this worked perfect for me. It stores previous runs so you can see any progress you make.

    Exceded Every Expectation

I began training for a half marathon last week. I was using a Nike SportBand to track my runs. It was not accurate at all so I decided to get a GPS watch to get the most out of my training. The Garmin Forerunner 10 has EVERYTHING and more that I was looking for. I like that you can customize what data you see while you run on the 2 data pages. I set my first data page to show Pace and Distance, my second data page shows Chronograph and Calories. You hit a button on the side to toggle between the 2 pages. I like that it has a backlight. You can set pace goals so that the watch will alert you to speed up if you fall below your pace goal. Another feature that I like is the Auto Pause, it will pause your run automatically when you stop. So if you get caught at a red light or have to use the restroom, it pauses your run and then resumes your run when you start moving. The GPS connects in about 5 seconds, but you have to be outdoors or it has trouble connecting. Tonight I set up my Garmin Connect account online. All I can say is that it is PHENOMENAL. You can analyze your runs 200 different ways. You can view maps of your run routes. You can set goals. You can do a ton of stuff that's pretty cool. The only thing that this watch doesn't do is track your heart rate, which was not a deal breaker for me. Coming from the Nike SportBand, this watch has blown me away. I could not be happier with this watch and all of the features that it has. And most of the features are customizable. Of everything I've mentioned, there are several more features that I haven't. And the price is pretty nice as well.

Good value so far, but had to take first one back.

This was an unusual purchase for me. The first Forefunner 10 that I bought was a piece of junk. One of the buttons fell off within a week and I had to keep putting it back in and then watch froze up and I couldn't get it to unfreeze. So I was bound and determined to buy a different and better watch. However, the last watch I had was a Forerunner 205 and I love the auto pause feature. If I rely on myself to pause the watch at every stoplight, I will forget to start it again on about half my runs. I was also impressed by the Garmin connect program. I couldn't find a reasonably priced watch with the features I wanted, and I'm used to the way the Garmin works. So after reading all of the rave reviews on the Forerunner 10 I decided that maybe that first watch was just a lemon. I've had the second watch for more than a month now and I haven't had any problems. I did decide to get the protection program this time to hedge my bets. Fingers crossed, but so far so good. It doesn't have the rock solid feel of my Forerunner 205, but it is lighter and I like that it gives you a nice little summary of your run right after you finish. It also tells you when you have achieved a new record for speed or distance.

I was looking for a watch that would GPS track movements but, also be a stand alone unit meaning that I would not have to upload the results to my MacBook. This watch works great. Couldn't be happier.

Perfect for tracking miles and pace!

I wanted a way to keep track of miles ran without the need to preplan my runs. The Garmin Forerunner 10 allows to me walk out the door and run anywhere I feel like and know exactly how far I've gone! This is great when traveling and it also prevents boredom from setting in by running the same course every day. Another nice feature is the ability to customize what's displayed on the screen. While it is limited to how much information can be shown at one time, there is the ability to scroll to show more. Garmin also has a website where runs can be uploaded to keep track of progress. This information can be made public, if you want to share it with others, or you can keep it private. While this is a basic watch that doesn't have all the bells and whistles, it does have the most important basics at a good price.
