The light comes on when you open the door to put food in. When I was shopping I saw several that only turn the light on after you hit start, that is, while the food is cooking. It has a Kitchen Timer, which I wanted, and some don't. The stainless steel case makes it an attractive addition to the kitchen. Best Buy offered this at a good price too. I'm very pleased.

My new GE microwave fills my needs and fits my kitchen Perfectly.

It beeps if you leave your stuff inside past cook time, but not in an obnoxious way. The reasons I didn't go 5 stars: if the buttons don't have bright light shining on them, they are a little hard to read. Also you have to push most of those buttons a bit harder to get them to engage.
