Hi there, we're very sorry to hear your air conditioner hasn't been cooling well. We can only imagine how disappointing this is considering the rising temperatures and we're happy to help. We recommend the following tips: 1) Make sure the air conditioner is properly sized for the room. 2) Check to make sure nothing is blocking the front of the air conditioner. When the unit is blocked by curtains, blinds, or furniture, the air flow is restricted and cooling performance will be affected. 3) Consider the temperature of the room when the air conditioner was first turned on. If the room was very hot it will take longer to cool the room. 4) Check the thermostat setting. The highest setting will provide maximum cooling. We hope these tips are useful and we're wishing you the best. - Guy@GEA GE_Appliances

Do not buy this unit. I’ve been running it for two evenings now in approximately 85deg. temps in a 200 sf room. It’s set to cool - fan speed high and it blows warm air. The ceiling fan works better.

The AC was great at first and now a month later after the return policy is over, the noise has been just unbearable. It did not have this problem when we first got it. We can not get a decent sleep with the rattling noise it makes.

It didn't work. I got it, unpacked it and it wouldnt work from the get go. Kept giving me the FL code saying the internal tank was full. There was absolutely nothing in it. I called GE and they told me to take it back to Best Buy.

      Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're terribly sorry to hear that your portable air conditioner was displaying the tank full code and can understand how annoying that can be. We would recommend removing the water tank to check that there is nothing blocking the operation of the float. We hope this is helpful. Have a great day! Mike@GEA GE_Appliances

It’s definitely louder than my previous window air conditioner but does cool the room nicely. Beware of your window width. I have standard 28” window and needed to cut the supplied extension by 4 inches to fit. Disappointed that the nozzle that fits in the window does not include a screen as my older model portable did. Kudos to Best Buy for fast and timely delivery.

My review is based on the description of the product. I bought it because it’s described to heat and cool. However, when I got it I only opened it to read the manual and as I was reading I realized it only cooled.

Hello, we're so sorry to hear your air conditioner quit working after just a few months. We know how important it is to feel comfortable while you're working so we can imagine your frustration. Good performance but "portable" like a mobile home

Like many people trying to cope with rising costs of living, we were adjusting our whole-house thermostat a bit higher to save on our AC cooling bill, but we still wanted our master bedroom to be comfortable in the early evenings after baking all day in the hot AL sun. Window units aren't allowed in our neighborhood per HOA rules, so that left us with the prospect of an indoor/portable unit. This GE actually fit the bill nicely and it does a good job of cooling at a relatively low noise level, but you definitely need to know what you're getting ahead of time. First off, this unit is pretty big and heavy. Yes--there are casters on the bottom to aid in movement, but it still clocks in at over 60 pounds of pure dead weight; maneuvering it from the garage where the delivery truck left it, then up a few steps and into the house, proved to be a bit of a challenge without a second set of strong arms at the ready. The unit itself is a bit larger than a oversized kitchen garbage can, but the manual also advises that you need at least 2.5 feet of clear space beside the unit (walls or furniture) and at least 20" behind for optimal airflow and cooling performance. These clearance requirements, coupled with the substantial size of the unit, meant we had to make some unplanned furniture changes near the only bedroom window we had to accommodate installation. Second, you must install the window kit...like a mobile home, yes, you can move the unit around, but to actually USE it, it has to be installed in a [semi] permanent location. You are limited to the length of the relatively stiff vent hose provided--you cannot use a dryer-style extension or low-profile kit to move the AC into a more distant corner, and the stiffness of the hose means you're going to be hard-pressed to get the unit closer to the wall than the 20" of clearance specified in the manual. The vent opening on the center window panel is crimped down to a smaller, stadium-shaped opening, as opposed to the larger diameter of the circular main hose, but the opening itself is not screened in, so if your window doesn't already have a screen installed, you might have to contend with some bugs or critters trying to get into the hose assembly. The main window panel will fit a 20" wide opening; two locking, add-on side panels will allow you to install the window kit in an opening up to 46" wide. While researching this unit, I read a few complaints where the side panels did not properly fit the customer's window opening because the kit was too narrow if one panel was installed and fully extended, but was too wide if both panels were installed and set at minimum extension. Fortunately we didn't have that problem during our installation; but so long as you are prepared to score and cut one of the plastic panels for an optimum fit, you should be able to fit the window kit anywhere in the range specified by the manual. Note that with the side panels installed, the window kit does look a bit "flimsy" and will leave some small gaps next to the window pane/frame--we had to add a bit of foam insulation tape (none is provided) to get a solid and reassuring seal. Finally, the unit DOES need to drain condensed water like any window shaker would. There is a "continuous drainage hole" at the rear of the unit near the large exhaust vent--the manual tells you it's there, but offers no instructions or accessories/tubing regarding its use. I could be wrong, but I assume it would be possible to MacGyver in a drainage hose of some kind assuming you had a place for the condensation to empty (like a floor drain)...but the window kit has no hole or accommodations for any type of hose assembly. Mere mortals will use the lower drainage hole...this is what the manual describes, and here's where it gets tricky again. If you are using the unit in dehumidifier mode, or it's simply been running for a long time, the display panel will eventually light up "FL" and you know the internal water tank is full. To empty the tank, you have to slide a VERY shallow pan under the unit, reach around to the back, unscrew the cap, pull out the rubber plug, and let the water empty into the pan. Thankfully, the drainage plug is closer to one of the corners than directly in the middle, but it's still in the back and pretty much at ground level (just an inch or so off the floor--we had to use a baking sheet because we couldn't fit the lip of any other pan beneath the drain plug), so reaching the assembly may require some yoga or gymnastics moves, especially depending on the layout of your room or the type of furniture you might have nearby. Don't let all of this lead you to think there isn't anything here of value...I simply wish we had known about some of these usability and installation details before we started. Once the AC was installed, it did its job well and is pretty much what you would expect of a simple, mid-priced AC unit. The remote control (which can stow away at the back of the unit itself) duplicates the functions of the touch panel and allows you to toggle power, fan speed (3 of them), mode of operation (fan, AC, dehumidifier), set the temperature (the unit can be set down to 64 or as high as 86), set a timer (1-24 hours), and adjust the vertical louvers to a single position or to constant vertical swing. The unit is actually very quiet in operation, especially on lower fan settings, and only got a little intrusive--as any AC unit would--if it was working hard to cool our room while the rest of the house and the outside was particularly warm and humid. There are two removable air filters at the rear of the unit, a larger top filter and a narrow rear filter, both of which can be washed or vacuum-cleaned with little effort; note that the recommended cleaning interval is every 2 weeks or so if the unit is in constant use. But as for cooling performance, we are definitely pleased with the results--we can keep our house thermostat set at 75 or even 76 and our bedroom is still a comfortable 68-69 degrees. We do recommend a ceiling fan in the same room to keep the air circulating though--like pretty much any portable or window-installed AC unit, the GE cuts off operation entirely once it reaches the programmed temperature and restarts only when the unit reads a temperature increase. Fortunately, you DO have the remote handy if you want the option of having the GE running in fan mode after the AC has done its job. All in all, this is a solid choice for an indoor AC if you know what you're getting into ahead of time.

Hello. We appreciate the time you took to reach out, though we hate to hear you've had any issue with the air conditioner. We know that may have caused concern and would like to help. The air conditioner has a timer you can use to program your unit to turn on or off without having to manually do so - if it turned off unexpectedly it may have been timed to do so, which can be adjusted. There is also a remote control you can use to allow you to adjust the temperature, fan speed and mode options without having to do so manually. Further details on the controls for the air conditioner are available in the use and care manual. If you feel the air conditioner is not working as it should, there is also information about your limited warranty on page 15. We're happy to help if you have any other concerns or questions. All the best! -Sarah@GEA GE_Appliances

      Hello,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We're quite sorry to hear your portable air conditioner is not cooling well and understand your frustration. If your portable air conditioner is not cooling properly, first make sure it is sized properly to the room. Oversizing a unit will cause it to turn off too soon while undersizing a unit will prevent it from keeping the entire room cool enough. Confirm there is ample space around the unit, and that there is nothing obstructing the air flow around the intake. Check your owner's manual for space requirements. Check your set temperature and make sure it is set at a cooler temperature than your room temperature.
Make sure there is no obstruction in the exhaust hose and the hose is not kinked or overly bent. We hope this information helps. Have a great day! Mike@GEA GE_Appliances
