I purchased the ice maker for my daughter. I’m a little mad at myself because I did not purchase the extended warranty. It hasn’t been a week since I picked it up, do you think I still can purchase the warranty? The ice maker was pricey but she deserves it and every one now is stopping by her house for a cold cup of sonic ice, Lol

While the ice maker is great even awesome for the first year or year and a half, it starts getting an algae you just can’t keep clean until you take it completely apart using YouTube videos. It’s vile! Its putrid and you don’t even know about it direct from GE manuals or service, I just happen to find some reviews on keeping the algae at bay and found this info, otherwise we would still be using this with all the muck! The internal tubes are rock hard full of some kind of solids. You have to take them off and soak them until you can clean & drain them! Sickened from the thought we’ve been using this all the while it’s spitting out filth. Pics are of internal water tank full of ? and hoses with dry solid material that sends the water to make ice, very very difficult to clean at this stage.

I love this ice, but the little filter never stays put in the bottom and is constantly falling out. For something so pricey, I expect better.

Mold in 3 brand new boxes

I purchased the Opal 2.0 in-store brand new and was really shocked and disappointed to discover that the box contained a large amount of MOLD (see photos). After lugging this heavy box home it’s a real pain to have to go back to the store to replace it which is ultimately what we did. But the story doesn’t end there, the store ended up opening 2 more boxes and they all contained mold at the bottom. After spending all that time and money we ultimately decided to just keep the one that had the least amount of mold and heavily sanitized it when we got home. Overall I don’t believe this unit is worth the $600, I think $400-$450 would be more reasonable. Aside from the mold issues, the higher cost of the Opal 2 is likely due to the added WiFi technology which to me is gimmicky for an ice maker and not truly functional. The only way to use the wifi technology is to download the poorly developed SmartHQ app (a cheap web-based app) which forces you to enter a ton of private info like your phone number, email, address, and DOB just to register. Since it’s web-based there is no secure login options like Apple sign-on, FaceTime authentication, or any other modern security methods. As for the product itself, it’s a lot bigger than I expected even though it still has the same 3 lb capacity as the cheaper Opal 1.0. It is a nice looking ice maker for sure and it’s very quiet, but there are decent looking nugget ice makers out there that are cheaper, have more holding capacity, and include actual beneficial features like automatic dispensing. If I had more time and patience to purchase any different unit I would gladly give another brand a try before hunkering down the $600 for this.

I had the first gen Opal ice maker for 5 years, and it finally died. Loved that thing. Got this one as its replacement. Followed the initial setup procedure and cleaning procedures. I started noticing the ice had a smell, and the inner water tank was not clear water. I run high quality bottled water through it. So I cleaned it again and even got some brushes to clean inside the drain hoses on the outside of the unit. Didn't take too long after the cleaning to notice the ice had a smell and the water was discolored. So, I took the entire unit apart, and I was utterly shocked at what I saw. I cleaned the entire thing, and STILL have the same problem. The inner water tank is basically a breeding ground because it isn't cooled and sits next to components that get hot. That spreads to the internal lines. Looks like a poor design, from the research I've done. Others have the same issue. Very disappointing!! I shouldn't have to take the entire ice machine apart every single month to clean it....

I've wanted one of these for so long. So glad I finally purchased it. The ice is just like Sonic ice, small, soft and delicious! I've tried other brands that my friends have but they just don't compare. The side tank makes it even easier. Highly recommend!

Well. I wanted to love it. Contemplated returning it, but it’s staying. It doesn’t make as much ice as I thought it would. I bought it to have backup ice for frozen drinks. Looks like I can get two margaritaville pitchers from a full bin. It’s also always meetings so it’s generally wet ice and the ice patches, so the sensor thinks the bin is full and it’s not. Looks nice on the counter…it’s cute. It makes some extra ice, but not nearly as useful as I was hoping. Pictures: see ice pitched… it thinks it’s full. I shake it up and it’s a little more than 1/2 full.

It does make nugget ice, however when it was the initial clean it states to add a teaspoon of bleach and I cud never get rid of the bleach smell on my ice. So that took my appetite for the chewable ice. I made ice a few times and kept dumping it thinking I can get rid of the smell before I actually started putting the ice in my drinks but the smell stuck. Also after the ice is made. It just melt and start again I thought it would be insulted to stay ice for a while.

I think I got a lemon. I want to love it, I really do, but I’ve tried to troubleshoot it and can’t seem to find any reference to my particular issue. There were a couple dings on the back panel after unboxing, but I don’t believe that would cause the issue. I followed the directions for initial use. After the cleaning I filled it with water and “Making ice” lit up on the front. About 30 min in and 1/5 ice tray full, it goes In to “Defrost” mode and starts spilling water into the the ice tray through the cycle water outlet above it (reference picture). Not sure who had that genius idea, but flowing water and ice don’t agree and the ice produced commenced to melt and flow back into the water reservoir. So began the endless cycle of produce a little ice then melt it during defrost mode. Defrost mode consistently kicked in roughly every 20-30 min of producing ice. Gave it a test run of 6-7 hours while we were out of the house only to come home to an empty ice tray. After shelling out hundreds of dollars for this machine, again, I really do want to love it and will be seeing what Best Buy has to say. Luckily I spent the extra money on extended warranty. Would I recommend it, yes if it functioned properly. Again, think I just got a lemon.
