The "good ice", now at home

The Opal ice maker is just as it appears, a convenient, counter top ice maker that makes the "good ice" as my family refers to it. In the box is the ice maker, drip tray, side tank, side tank attachment clip, ice scoop, and drain hose. There are three buttons on the front: Power, Light (hi/low/off) and Clean. Setup is easy, remove from box, read quick start guide if necessary, turn on power, select clean, remove the ice bin, then run the bleach water cleaning cycle a few times, draining into the sink after each cycle. Once that is complete, connect side tank and you're good to go. For start up I placed the Opal next to the kitchen sink, however after cleaning is done there is no need to drain any more water. I then found that at 16.5" tall its fits under the top cabinets in my coffee prep area so I moved it there, as it does take up a bit of counter space. The process is easy, for a small amount fill the internal reservoir (located under the ice bin) to between the min and max fill lines. For lots of ice, plug in the side tank. With two kids and my husband I find that we go through one full side tank of water a day filling water bottles in combination with normal use. Once the sensor determines the ice tank is full it shuts off the compressor, resuming after the ice bin has been opened. I was impressed that the ice maker will resume even when only removing a scoop or two of ice. Pros: Quick, on demand ice With the stainless steel front, the ice maker blends in well with the other appliances. Convenient side tank requires minimal refills Cons: The operating sound level is just enough to be annoying. My master bedroom is near the kitchen, so when the compressor runs at night its audible, not so much that I will stop using it, but something I had to get used to. The app - intuitively I downloaded the "Opal Ice Maker" app, that wouldn't pair. I then went to the website, did some searching, and found that by holding the power and light button I could get the wifi icon to flash on the ice maker. The GE website listed in the instructions advised to visit the GE connected appliance site, which provided a different app, SmartHQ. I then installed this app, however upon trying to register my account the email was sent to spam, flagged as malicious, and once I did get it to open I found that the link to register wouldn't work. At which point I have given up, I'll survive without it. No built in storage / holder for the ice scoop. If you're looking for a home bar, basement, entertainment area ice maker and you have the patience to deal with the app OR don't need it, this is a great machine and provides as much ice as a family of four can consume on a daily basis. Even with its cons I find that I really enjoy having this ice maker and will recommend.

Opal 2.0: Nugget Ice Done Right

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 is a fantastic ice maker that delivers on its promise of perfect nugget ice. It’s quick, easy to use, and the side tank ensures we never run out during gatherings. The built-in Wi-Fi is a nice touch—I can schedule ice production from my phone, which is surprisingly convenient. It’s sleek, fits well on the counter, and looks great in the kitchen. It is a bit pricey, but for nugget ice fans, it’s worth every penny.

    Love-Hate Relationship

When it does make nugget ice, it's fantstic! Unfortunately, more often than not, we get slushy ice, not nugget ice. I have regularly cleaned and de-scaled this ice maker and have only ever used reverse osmosis water in it, so it has been maintained properly. I have tried everything to figure why one batch of ice comes out perfect and then the next batch is a slushy clump of ice. I even added a large computer case fan to the side of the unit to help cool it, which seems to help some, but it's still hit or miss. If I unplug it and let it sit for 20-30 minutes, sometimes, the next batch will be good, but not always. It will make a perfect batch of ice and then sit for hours without running and then when you open it to get ice and it starts running again, we are right back to slushy ice. I have also removed dust from the coils to ensure that was not the issue. This helped temporarily, but it was back to its old ways in a couple of days. Our issues started around the 15-month mark and have continued since. I really don't want to have to buy another unit after only 2.5 years of ownership. They are expensive! Pros: Great ice! (when it’s working right) App allows you to program a schedule to turn it on and off based on your needs (it would be nice to be able to program more than one start and one stop schedule per day) Looks nice Cons: Makes slushy ice more often than nugget ice Requires weekly cleaning which is a hassle, a bit messy and it is time consuming It’s pretty loud when it’s running Makes a loud, strange squealing sound every so often The scoop and drip tray are very cheap plastic (I replaced with them with better ones made of stainless steel) Final Thoughts: If our unit made good ice all the time, this would be a 5-star review. The ice is so great when it’s working right and so frustrating when it’s not. I’m hoping an Opal 3.0 is coming soon that will improve upon the 2.0.

Your feedback is very valuable, and we are glad to hear you really like your Opal. However, we are sorry that you are having issues with slushy ice. If the icemaker was turned off for a while and restarted it is normal for there to be slush instead of ice initially. After approximately 30 minutes the Opal will be making standard ice nuggets. If your Opal Ice Maker is not working properly and these tips did not resolve the issue, you can contact Opal Ice Maker Support, or call 1-866-907-6718, M-F 8-8 EST, for further assistance. I love this machine. The nugget ice is wonderful and it can make quite a bit of ice very quickly. I love it. There are a few downsides though. This machine is massive. If you are planning on putting it on a kitchen countertop, make sure you have enough clearance to fit it under any upper cabinets you might have. Also, this machine isn't exactly quiet. It's not loud per say, but it can be a little annoying if you are sensitive to sounds. I worry a little bit about the long term reliability based on many reports of issues, but only time will tell. Pros - Wonderful nugget ice - Side tank is a necessity - Can make a lot of ice Cons - Price (a little high for an ice maker) - Quite large / takes up lots of counter space - Can be loud - questionable reliability .

This is a fantastic ice maker, I love it. It works fast and is very efficient. It is a little noisy when it is making ice but that is the only not perfect thing about it. It makes great chewable ice and keeps up quite nicely. It is easy to clean and use.

I bought this ice machine about four weeks ago because the built in ice maker in my refrigerator stopped masking ice in addition to the ice water not working for some time. The product was easy to set up and the web app works fine for remotely turning the machine on or off to make ice, although I do not see much use for it by me. The ice it makes is great and I like the features of a light, drop down ice drawer and easy to fill removable water tank. The machine is not absolutely quiet but it is not loud or intrusive and the sound it makes is acceptable. The counter space it takes up is reasonable and the stainless steel coloring matches with my other appliances. We will see how reliable it is as time goes on but so far it has been outstanding. My only issue so far has been the price of the unit. I was fortunate to have a good amount of Best Buy Rewards that I applied to the purchase to make it more reasonable,

Let me start by saying that I love this ice maker, for the most part. It makes great ice and the water tank on the side is a must have. It can be filled every 2-3 days instead of always having to remove the ice bin to fill the interior water container. On the negative side it's very expensive and I'm not sure why. It's a little noisy and when making ice it you can also her the ice shaving being compressed into the small cubes. If you can afford it and you like small, soft ice it can be worth it. It's still $200 more than it should be.

As a family, we love the Nugget-style ice. We buy a bag of it from time to time, but it just takes up so much space in our freezer, we don't do it often. I seen this GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker and thought it would be a good investment, as we collect and drink quite a bit of "Energy Supplements", like GFUEL, Sneak, GG (Gamersupps), etc - as well as some non-caffiene hydration supplements. We use the GFUEL shaker cups and also Blender Bottles. A lot of times, regular ice cubes just get in the way or, in the GFUEL shakers, you have to remove the inner "rim" that mixes the powder when you shake, before you can put the ice cubes in it. I received this and let me say - it is HEAVY. Like, way heavier than I expected it being. Also, don't be like me and try to lift out the Ice Maker from the box. I found out afterwards that once you cut the plastic bars from around the box, the top part of the box just lifts up and exposes the full unit. Yeah, do that instead... (the box wasn't marked in any way, that I seen - I only noticed when I went to move the empty box). The Quick Start guide and the manual have different initial set up instructions, which I found very confusing. I spent hours trying to figure out what I should do. The quick start guide wants you to do a full bleach clean cycle (a 14 step process...) before using. However, the regular manual wanted you to just do a "rinse" cycle before using. I did neither because...honestly? It was so confusing. Especially with the whole side tank thing. I couldn't find anywhere that expained how to just do a "rinse cycle" without doing a clean cycle. So, I just went ahead with the normal hookup of the unit, following the manual. I let it make it's first full batch of ice and just tossed it. I figured that would be as good of a "rinse" as any. Also, to minimize having to clean this, since it's such a huge, convoluted process, I'm just buying gallons of distilled water and using it with the unit. Also, of note - when doing the full cycle clean process with bleach...you MUST remember to remove the water filter before doing so. It's not even listed in the normal cleaning steps that I could find...I didn't see that until later on. It does make great nugget ice. However, I have a few caveats with this machine. When making ice, the water runs down the back of the unit (on the inside), down into the reservoir, below. But, I noticed in doing so, it enters the Ice Tray and melts the ice. Because of this, it seems to be "wasteful" to an extent, because this melts some of the ice and it has to make more. There is a drain area in the ice tray...I guess for this and for when any of the ice does melt. I usually have to fill the side tank about once every two days. There is no "Water Level Low" indicator light or beep to let you know it needs refilling. So, you do kinda have to babysit this thing. As for noise, we have it on our kitchen counter. It's not TOO loud, but when it is making ice, you can definitely hear it (not just the ice dropping, but the hum of the machine). Also, the Opal app is worthless. I downloaded it on my iPhone 11 Pro Max phone and I still have yet to get it to connect to the machine. It flat out doesn't work for me. It just says "Searching for Appliances". I have deleted and reinstalled the app twice now. Rebooted my phone several times. Unplugged the Ice Maker several times (as was suggested in the troubleshooting FAQ online). Nothing works. In the app, I did notice when I hit the Menu button, followed by "App Info", it says the current version is 1.0.0.1 and there is a new 5.1.0 update available. There is an "Update" button, but tapping it does nothing and there still have been no updates to this app in the app store. It also says the Bluetooth and Firmware versions are 0.0.0.0. So, who knows. I tried calling Opal Support for the above app issues and to ask them if the water running from the unit into the ice tray was normal. I was on hold for 30 minutes. Pressed option 1 for a callback when an agent was available. I got a call back...several hours later...to a DEAD LINE. I answered and nobody was there. I stayed on the line for about 6 minutes and there was still no agent - so I hung up. I'm beginning to think that the bluetooth/wifi portion of my unit is defective or something, since the app doesn't detect it. Then again, the app isn't greatly reviewed either, so it could just be a poor app. I've delayed my review so I could get this fixed and see how well the app worked (from what I've read, it's really just for scheduling and turning the unit off and on, remotely)...but that never happened. So, this will play a major factor in the number of stars I give. In conclusion - due to the above issues: The initial confusion when setting up the unit (the differences between the quick start guide and the manual in regards to initial setup and cleaning vs rinsing), the fact that water pours down through the ice tray and melts the existing ice (when making more ice), the number of issues I've had with the app and being unable to reach phone support... I'm giving this unit a 3 out of 5 stars. I mean, it seems to be working O.K. and the Ice itself is fantastic. There's just too many random issues with it, that I've experienced. If I could, I'd totally go with a different brand.

The Ultimate Icemaker - GE Profile Opal 2.0 Portab

I recently purchased the GE Profile - Opal 2.0 24-lb. Portable Ice maker with Nugget Ice Production, Side Tank, and Built-in WiFi (in Stainless Steel) and have been thoroughly impressed by its performance and features. As someone who loves to entertain guests and enjoys a well-crafted beverage, this ice maker has been a game-changer. First, the design and build quality are top-notch. The stainless steel finish not only looks sleek and modern, but it also blends in seamlessly with my other kitchen appliances. Its compact design allows it to be easily moved around or stored when not in use, making it perfect for my small kitchen space. The nugget ice it produces is perfect for various types of drinks. It has a soft, chewable texture that doesn't dilute drinks quickly, making it ideal for cocktails, iced coffee, and even smoothies. The Opal 2.0 can produce up to 24 lbs of ice in a day, which is more than enough for my needs. The side tank is a fantastic addition, as it increases the ice maker's water capacity and reduces the frequency of refilling. This is a huge plus for me, especially when hosting parties or large gatherings. The built-in WiFi feature allows me to monitor and control the ice maker remotely using the GE Profile Opal app on my smartphone. This has proven to be very convenient, as I can start or stop ice production, schedule the ice maker to start at a specific time, and receive notifications when the ice bin is full or the water tank needs refilling. A minor drawback I've experienced is that the ice maker can be a bit noisy during the ice-making process. However, this is a small trade-off considering the quality and quantity of ice it produces. In conclusion, the GE Profile - Opal 2.0 Portable Ice maker is a fantastic investment for anyone looking to elevate their at-home beverage experience. The combination of its stylish design, incredible nugget ice production, and smart features make it an essential addition to any modern kitchen. I highly recommend the Opal 2.0 to anyone who wants to enjoy high-quality ice without the hassle of constantly running to the store or dealing with traditional ice trays.

Hello- Wow! This review has made our day! We truly appreciate you taking the time to share such a thorough review of your experience with our beautiful Opal Nugget Icemaker. This is awesome! We are so grateful for your kind words. Note: At the start of the ice making process, the Opal will flush the system with water for approximately 5 minutes. You may see or hear water running during this process - this is normal. If Opal seems loud during this process, it may need more water. If you need anything or have any questions in the future, please let us know. We are happy to help! Joyce@GEA GE_Appliances

Its runs great, always have ice, side tank is a plus. Price sucks, and cleaning is a constant. The major cleaning issue is clean hose lines inside the machine also need cleaning using pipe cleaners. No amount of vinager and bleach will disolve the alge. Do a major clean every 3 months or so. Otherwise, an excellent machine.

Got this machine cause we were having some troubles with the ice maker in our fridge and my wife love's the nugget ice. I did purchase the machine as an open box item and used points so I did not spend much out of pocket on the machine though. Machine has been good about making ice and where we have it placed it does not have enough noise to be a problem for us. The only problems I've really had with it so far is that the ice will make a mound in the back of the tank where it is dropped and will stop making ice so I have to go open the tank and spread out the ice so that it will start making ice again. Set up to control with the phone was simple, if I had payed attention first I would have gotten the password off of the label while I was setting up the machine instead of waiting until the ice tank was almost full to turn around the machine and get the password off of the back. Other than that set up was quick and easy. The side tank has been great, but I've noticed it looks like it adds water to the tank by running it through a drain in the top that goes through the ice tank and down into the reservoir so it melts some of the ice in the tank but not enough to cause a problem for us. There isn't a method of attaching a water line to the machine so it must be manually filled. I just keep a gallon bottle of water so that I can add water to the bottom reservoir and the side tank as needed.

First 72 hours in and our family loved this ice maker. It works awesome for our needs and the appliance doesn’t appear out of place compared to some other portable ice makers on the market. The smartphone application utilizes the SmartHQ application and gives control over the status of the maker — you can also set up schedules to make ice, however, we have just been letting it do it’s thing as we take ice out of the bin. Overall, I was skeptic of the $500+ price tag but having the ability to keep ice on hand without having to sacrifice precious freezer space in an apartment is awesome!

Especially during the summer months, having cool drinks with a group usually means having a cooler with ice or not having cool drinks. Enter Opal! This nifty device has the capacity to make a pound of ice an hour and it holds three pounds at a time. Even better, it makes ice pellets and not the giant cubes that don't work well with some cups. This is a counter-top device and it fits well but if you were limited on counter-space beware. It will look fantastic in almost any environment especially if you have stainless steel. Setting up the unit is pretty straight forward but there are a few things that aren't crystal clear. First, if you purchase the additional side water tank (I highly recommend), there is a hose (b) that connects to it that is attached on the top back of the unit. On the initial setup, it seems counter-intuitive but you do add water under the tray that holds the ice and you add water tho the side tank. Once the water is added and it starts making ice, the first batch will be mushy but it's fine. In about 45 minutes you will have close to the first pound of ice. The unit is not silent! it is by no means noisy but if you are looking for something that makes zero noise I don't think any of the good counter top ones do that. Above the good looks and fast ice making, it also has a cloud and WiFi feature that allows you to turn it on or off and check the status of the ice remotely. Having folks over and you need ice, no problem, turn in on and it'll be ready by the time you get home. To use the WiFi you will need to download the SmartHQ app NOT the GE Opal one. Once that is done, to enter WiFi inclusion mode you will need to push and hold the light and power buttons until the WiFi indicator lights up, from there follow the directions on the app. Overall this is an outstanding device and can't wait to put it to full use.

Who knew ice was so important to so many people? If you had told me I'd need to buy a unique premium product to help me bring the temperature of water below it's freezing point, I'd have laughed in your face. However, here we are, sitting on the patio and each member of my family happily crunching on these delightful little pellets of frost. I can't say this is the most essential purchase I've ever made, but I can say that my wife - an ice aficionado/addict since her first pregnancy and all of her friends at book club declare this the best ice and the best invention they've ever seen. I was told I won Christmas, much to the embarrassment of the of neighborhood dads. If you find that you go out of your way to hit Chick Fil A or Sonic's to get the good ice, this just might be the product for you. I enjoy the ice too, but I have found that some people REALLY enjoy it. With this, they will not be disappointed. As far as ease of use and maintenance, there are no issues at all. I had a minor purge issue initially with one of the hoses, but once I cleared and reattached the tubes, it resolved the issue. I opted for the side tank to avoid having to fill it up more frequently and it's kept us going strong since purchase. As other reviews state, there is some appreciable noise when it's actively making ice, but nothing I would say is excessive. Overall, I'd say the amount of use and joy this has brought the house has justified the eye raising price!

So far this has been great and has been running all the time since I have bought it. I had been wanting one of these nuggets ice makers for a while. I did a lot of research and even considered the original Opal model when it was released, but glad I waited because those were plagued with issues. I think the updated model by GE fixes many of them. I still bought the extended warranty from Bestbuy for peace of mind and I would recommend you do too. A few things to note, but they shouldn’t deter you. Be prepared to clean this thing at least twice a month. The app will prompt you to clean every week but I ignore that. This involves draining the unit and running a cleaning cycle with some bleach. Then, flushing that out, filling with clean water, and running another cleaning cycle. I should say I only use reverse osmosis water in this and it helps with build up and keeping it as clean as possible. I image using regular filtered watered that has a higher mineral content will probably lead to problems sooner. Even the optional filter that’s available for this doesn’t do much since it only removes the taste of chlorine. You need a filter capable of mineral removal if you want the best possible experience, in my option. While running, the noise doesn’t bother me. I use the app to setup a schedule so it runs only three times a day. I do use alot of ice and it keeps up so I’m happy about that. The ice will melt as soon as it’s in the bin but that’s fine because it drains into the tank which get’s turns back into ice the next time the machine runs. This operates just like a built in under counter ice maker. I find a full bin of ice melts down to about half over night. However, as mentioned earlier, I have it scheduled so it starts early morning and I wake up to a full bin. Overall I’m happy. There is nothing better on the market as far as counter top units go, so can’t complain too much.

Honestly, i think my husband likes this more than our kids. Who doesn't love crunchy hospital ice? The dogs consider this to be a treat, lol. The machine is a bit on the touchy side and you have to keep on top of cleaning it, but it produces a lot of ice and it is super easy to use. I think the app is a bit on the gimmicky side, but it will allow you to keep on eye on some functionality. It's a little pricey, but this type of ice machine (tiny crunchy nuggets vs. typical fridge ice) is so gratifying that it is worth it. Great for a wet bar/rec room, etc. Super, super fantastic for making quick smoothies and coffee drinks, or just for crunching. The vacuum hose system has a primer which helps a lot as it's easy to get air in the line and system will not function properly when this happens. Easy fix, you just have to be patient sometimes and as I noted, this is a bit on the "be gentle" side for an appliance. I do wish the ice drawer was insulated better, but the system allows for the melting of ice to be recirculated into the system, which is great as we don't have water leaking everywhere. We keep this near a sink for easy cleaning, etc. Don't put in direct sunlight or you'll be cleaning this constantly and the ice won't stay solid for very long. Great entry unit for the price considering an under the counter unit starts at about $2000+.

The ice the Opal puts out has a great texture. It is not completely solid, so it melts quickly and is good to chew. It is great for drinks. The side tank is a must, as we refill it every day or two. The cleaning light turns on quickly. With the app, it can be controlled on a schedule, turning off at night and on again in the morning. It can even be controlled with Alexa, but the schedule is sufficient for control. The machine is not too loud. It fits nicely on the counter, under the cabinet, next to the refrigerator. The styling is very nice.

The ice is great; chewable and just like you get at a drive-in. The machine is easy to setup and starts working right away. It does make quite a bit of noise so we moved it from the kitchen into the laundry room. We originally had the Opal 1.0 but had to return it as it was making all kinds of grinding screeching noises. This 2.0 has a few improvements, mainly the labeled buttons vs. the single round flashing button and Wi-Fi vs, Bluetooth. It is also slightly smaller so it can fit on the counter below the upper cabinets. The 2.0 also has the option to use a water filter which is nice. The Wi-Fi seems like a bit of a gimmick but it does track cleaning and filter replacement intervals. Overall a nice indulgence the whole family enjoys. Went ahead and bought an extended service plan as long term reliability seems to be an issue for some based on their reviews.

Great ice, faulty product with limited shelf life

We are now on our sixth machine in only two years. Despite following the factory instructions of only using filtered water and regular cleanings, each machine’s shelf life before the problems begin is only weeks to months. They begin squealing and banging loud noises every single time. We have learned to buy the Best Buy warranty and usually the swap out our faulty machines with a new one. Then it’s only a matter of time before the new one begins having issues. Today my husband brought our faulty machine and the Rancho Cucamonga store is refusing to swap it out and wants to keep it and try and repair it. At this point (because I do love the ice and do it want to be without an ice maker), I think the best recourse is a full refund for the product and the warranty and shop for a new and improved one elsewhere as now Best Buy is giving us a difficult time with the exchange.

A far superior ice maker than the first version.

I owned the first version of this ice maker for a few years... It was not ready for prime time. When it died, I thought I would give V2.0 a shot. I have not been disappointed. It is far more robust in engineering and design. The ice chunks are larger than V1.0 and it seems the bin is larger. The external watertank is a slight redesign. One thing to pay attention to, the tube going from the water tank to the ice maker needs to LAY FLAT on the counter (not have any raises to it). If it doesn't, the water cannot gravity feed to the icemaker on demand. The output of this machine is pretty good; surprising how much ice it makes in a little time. This is also WIFI enabled - and the lighting on it is far better than the original. A little pricey, but I think it is well worth it.
