So I really like the ice out of this ice machine. That being said, buy the extended warranty. This is my 3rd GE ice maker in 18 months because they tend to have issues. I am religious about cleaning this unit weekly and descaling monthly. I use distilled water for the ice. This machine still breaks anywhere from the 6 month to 1 year mark. The ice is great! But the machine has durability issues. So pay a little bit extra at the front end because I can almost guarantee you will be replacing it. Ive done it 3 times. Sidenote- the return process with Bestbuy is pretty easy!

It makes a little noise but I have it on my dry sink. No problem at all. It's amazing how fast it makes ice. Great purchase. I use distilled water so I don’t get scaling. Don’t need to clean as often.

I purchased GE Opal Ice Maker 2.0 in 06/2021. Up until two weeks ago. I've been happy with the purchase. They ice it makes is amazing. It does put out a substantial amount a day. Family of 5 has been using it. Seldom does the ice level get low. It is not a quiet appliance. Over time I got used to it. The maintenance is a bit of a pain but necessary. One week ago it started making a horrible squealing sound. I turned it off cleaned it out. That did not help. Yesterday it stopped making ice. Luckily I purchased the 4 year Geek Squad Protection Plan. Will be submitting a claim today. The unit is expensive. Would not be happy if I had not purchased the additional protection. From other reviews I've seen online. Many customers started having similar issues around the 18 month period.

    Awesome icemaker!

OK - I spent A LOT of time researching countertop icemakers. We needed one as well as my mom and mother-in-law. For them, we settled on the Igloo brand at $139.00 which is perfect for a single person. I'm a little pickier and grew tired to buying bags of ice and my fridge is fine so I am not going to replace it just for a new icemaker. At $509.00, this is certainly an investment, but oh I am so glad I took the chance! As a long-time ice cruncher - you know the type! - I take my ice seriously. Those of us with this annoying little habit know that it is not good for our teeth to crunch on ice all day but I still want to do it! But the little pellets that this bad boy makes is excellent for ice crunchers. It is dense but soft - does that make sense?! They are about the size of a fingernail and maybe because of the small size, they do not melt as quick. And when you crunch, they do not hurt your teeth and are not so freezing cold either. The ice keeps well all day in the storage tray as well as in my Yeti cup! We left for a few days and just turned the machine off. Came home, turned it back on and it stirred up again making ice in less than 10 minutes. The added scoop is so nice - a simple thing, but nice to have on hand. We have not used the additional tank on the side yet. It's nice to be able to remove it when you don't need it. The machine is sleek and cool-looking - works well with stainless steel appliances and looks nice on the counter. It does take up a bit of room, so just be aware of the measurements if you want to fit it under a cabinet. It is super easy to clean too. As far as noise, there is a little bit of a "whirrrrring" sound but it is soft and often I forget what it is because it is faint. Sometimes when starting up, it may sound a bit louder, but when making ice, it generally has a soft sound so there are no complaints there. The price sucks at first but I believe it is well worth it. Buying bags at $2.50 about 3 times a week is $7.50, times 52 weeks a year is $390.00 so you figure out if it's worth it. AND I can take this with me camping or RVing or anywhere! No water lines or anything extra - just add water!! It does have it's own filtration so tap water is just fine. Don't delay - go and get one NOW! You'll love it!

-1 Star for noise... "Yes, it is supposed to be that loud." -- response from GE Support. We were caught a bit off-guard at how much noise is generated by a GE Profile device. If the ice wasn't exactly what we were hoping for, we would have returned it...but wow...the ice really is GREAT. I recommend using the app (Smart HQ, not Ice Maker by GE) to setup a schedule that works for you so the machine gets some downtime. I also strongly recommend purchasing the unit with the side tank because having to pull out the ice bucket to fill the machine would be one more negative point. Weekly cleaning is a bit of a chore, but the process is easy enough as long a you have a sink near the machine. In the end, we moved the ice maker to the laundry room where we could close the door and the noise isn't an issue. No one seems to mind making a pit stop to fill their water bottles for the good ice, so overall, I'd say this was a successful purchase. Quality - would be great except for the general noise and occasional squeaking when the ice is being cut Value - there is another "good ice" maker out there for much less and an unlimited number of ice makers that cost much, much less Ease of use - set it up, plug it in, turn it on, wait for ice

Great Ice: BUT PURCHASE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY

The machine looks great. Compared to other ice machines, when people come over they know you have the "boujee" ice machine. The ice texture is also great and my favorite ice. On the other hand there are several negatives qualities that I have learned during the duration of my time having this machine. 1. You MUST CLEAN IT. We would take it apart every week and clean the machine. Little particles were at the bottom of the machine sometimes and that is gross. The process of breaking it down can take time, and when you run the cleaning cycle a few times, when you are ready for it to make ice again, it will continue to run the cleaning cycle. We would have to unplug it for 15 minutes for it to finally make ice. Lastly, sometimes the side tank would have bubbles from cleaning it and it would give us the "add water" message even though it was full. 2. The app: it would work sometimes. When you would get your machine to connect to Wi-Fi you could tell it when to make ice and have it on a cycle. It worked half the time. Needed improvements. 3. THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE: BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. For this product to be $500-$650, the warranty is terrible. Opal gives you a 1 year limited warranty for when this product breaks. If you didn't purchase an extended warranty you are out of luck. Most of the time, this product will last a year, but after that you may start to experience issues. For us, during the year timeframe, the machine stopped making ice and began to squeak very loudly. It was so loud that you could hear it throughout the house. We ended up filing a warranty claim to get a new machine, but i would recommend spending the extra to get the warranty. Overall, I do think GE needs to work on this product and give customers a longer warranty. $600 for 1 year worth of ice is ridiculous

Following the instructions was a breeze, and the setup was easy to follow. The unit started making ice immediately, and having the side water container was a must. If you set the unit to start early in the morning, by the time you wake up, you'll have a full tray of ice ready to use.

This ice maker has been a lifesaver for the summer! The ice is chewable and lasts quite a long time inside the catch basin. The only minor complaints are the speed of ice making (it continuously cranks ice out but slowly) and it is a little noisier than anticipated. The side water tank is nice to have so you can fill up the water for the machine without having to take the bucket out.

Got the chance to review the GE Profile - Opal 2.0 24-lb. Portable Ice maker with Nugget Ice. and had a pretty good experience with it but also some mixed reviews. What's in the box: -Opal ice maker with ice bin -Side water tank -Drip tray -Ice scoop Setup: Setup was easy, you do have to clean up the ice maker with at least 3 rounds of filling the main tank full of water and letting it cycle throughout the system and finally draining it. Do this 3 times and also adding a teaspoon of bleach to help thoroughly clean the ice maker. Once you've gone through the cleaning process, you're ready to start making ice. The Opal ice maker is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, well that my opinion and fits right in with all my other appliances in my kitchen. After filling up the main and side tank with water (roughly 1 gallon), the ice machine started to make ice within 10 mins. The Opal will continually make ice with only 110v electricity and about a gallon of water. Truly portable ice maker with very minimal requirements which makes it great if you have a common area that can be reserved for parties or events. Total time to get to a decent amount of ice was about 2 hours. So if you plan on using this for a party make sure you plug this in and fill both the water tanks. My initial thought was this was a traditional ice maker that could store ice for long periods and be ready for me at all times of the day. I really like cold drinks and almost all my beverages are served cold. Unfortunately, this is purely an ice maker so once you make the ice you will need to store it in the freezer or it will melt and the ice maker will continually make ice. This is an awesome ice maker for parties or any get together were you want to serve cold drinks or just need ice. I would recommend this product.

    Best ice machine EVER!

I love this machine. I must have read 1000s of reviews before I bought this. I wanted to buy a commercial ice machine that makes nugget ice but they are sooooo expensive with no warranty; so I bought this one instead. I am so glad I did. I was so hesitant to buy this because it was still so expensive and there were some bad reviews that said it was noisy or quit working. Well, I have had mine for almost 1 year. It is not noisy. It does not squeal or have high pitched noises. You can hear a machine/motor running when it is making ice, but it’s not bothersome and it doesn’t last that long. I love the ice. The ice is that great “hospital” ice, like what you get from Follett ice machines. Honestly, the ice is a little more wet than that ice, but it is close enough. I love ice and I am constantly drinking ice water. I put this ice in my yeti cup with water and it stays for around 12-24 hours. It’s fantastic. It tastes so good and I never want to be without it. I clean it as directed with diluted bleach water every 1-2 weeks I only use distilled water because our faucet water is hard with a lot of minerals. I have never had a problem with mold or bacteria as others have stated in reviews. Although there is no freezer to keep the ice frozen, the ice stays for a long time without melting and I keep my house warm, especially in the winter. Don’t worry about bad reviews! Just buy it, you won’t be sorry. I bought the extended warranty, just in case. It is well worth it. The warranty is actually through GE, not Best Buy.

We love the 2.0 with WiFi. We have not had any issues and use it daily. I’m not sure that I would get the one without the side tank. This think can crank through the water. The side tank is necessary. I feel like without the tank you would get annoyed with trying to fill up the reservoir allll the time. Don’t try to save 50 bucks. We also purchased the extended warranty just to be sure based on a few of the reviews.. better safe than sorry,

Haier is giving GE a bad name...

I bought the Opal 2.0 on February 17, 2024, and took meticulous care of it, including only using distilled water and cleaning it regularly. Exactly three weeks past the 1-year warranty period (in March 2025), it started making an extremely loud squealing noise. GE's customer support provided no useful advice. I watched numerous youtube videos and tried to fix it myself. I was able to narrow down the problem to an issue with either the motor or the auger element (as I can see the squealing happens as soon as ice is being produced and the auger stops moving at the same time as the noise. I tried numerous fixes from there (short of replacing the motor) and nothing worked. As a side point, after disassembling the Opal, I could see that all the interior elements were still very clean, e.g., there was no scale build-up or mold anywhere (unlike many of the videos I have seen). The ice itself is perfect (and I am a nugget ice junky). It's too bad the product is unreliable. If you do buy one, my strong suggestion is to buy an extended warranty for the maximum time available (Best Buy seems to offer 4-years). Haier purchased GE Appliances in 2016 along with the rights to continue to use the GE brand. My view is that they are not honoring the values GE is known for in terms of the quality of the products they are producing or how they stand behind them...a strict 1-year warranty is not suitable for this product.

My observations and info about weekly cleaning

My husband and I love this ice maker. It's quite and easy to use. We make ice each morning and use the provided scoop to get ice throughout the day; whatever's left at the end of the day melts during the night and we start all over the next morning. If it's full of ice at night, we still have some ice left in the morning. The pieces are small, maybe 1/4", tubular pieces and they're more chewable than a regular ice. I've tried freezing leftover ice in the freezer, but the pieces freeze together in one clump and they get harder. If you just leave the ice in the ice maker, all the pieces remain separate. They ask that you clean it once a week by running a cycle with a small amount of bleach mixed with water, and then finish by running one or two additional cycles without bleach to rinse it. I've done this twice now and it takes maybe 10 minutes; it's easy. You just pull one end of a hose off the back of the machine and let the bleach water drain into the sink. I have it located in a corner next to the sink and it fits under my top cabinets. If you can't store it near the sink, it would be easiest just to drain the water into a large bowl instead of moving the whole unit to the sink. You could move it, it's just bulky. I almost never purchase an extended maintenance plan, but because all ice makers are notorious for breaking down, I did purchase an additional plan to handle these repairs. It's only been a month that we've owned this, but so far so good.

I love this ice maker. After multiple broken ice makers from Walmart-Mart we decided to go through Best-buy. This machine is great! The color is awesome and matches our other kitchen appliances. The ice is tasty. The WiFi tells you if it’s on and you can schedule it to make ice. It’s a bit noisy, but that is easily overlooked.

This thing is awesome. Real Sonic Style ice. Ice tastes good (i do recommend filter water for refilling). Count on using the side water tank (comes with it) you can use without, but doesnt make near enough ice without it. Cleaning is a must. The factory recommends weekly; that might be a little more often than necessary but you must clean it monthly or slimy glue like substance (bacteria/mildew) will accumulate. Love this thing. Great buy.

Yes it's pricey, but so far so good. Would definitely recommend the side-tank as I couldn't imagine having to remove the bin each time to fill the reservoir. A tad noisy while making ice, but nothing crazy. And although the made ice isn't cooled, it last a really long time, so once it's full it won't run for a while. All and all the wife and daughter say it's great!

This is a feature-rich ice maker that works well for residential purposes. I’ve found that I like using the schedule feature through the app so the ice maker isn’t running at night while people are sleeping, but it automatically produces ice during the day so we always have ice on hand. The ice tastes good and the machine is relatively quiet compared to cheaper brands. My only issue with this ice maker is that the housing vibrates and makes unnecessary noise, which could be eliminated with some insulating foam/rubber inside the cabinet (or a better housing design). Having an appliance that vibrates in a quiet house gives the impression that it’s poor quality, but overall this ice maker has been great in the 2 months we’ve had it. At this price point, it would also be nice if a water filter was included with the ice maker.
