So far we have been really pleased with the purchase of this GE Profile - Opal 2.0 ice maker (with the side tank). It is not cheap but it makes ice very quickly and yes, it is the "good kind" that is soft and chewy! Your drinks will be extra cold as the nuggets are small and we find that our family and friends just love it. It does make some noise while it is in operation and even more when it is in a defrost cycle (think what a wounded animal might sound like), however, this is for shorter periods of time and after it is left idle for a while, it shuts down and is silent. We leave ours on all the time and the ice in the unit will keep overnight. The melt drains into the water storage underneath and is recycled. I did purchase the extended warranty and look forward to many years of service. I have decided that this is now a product I cannot live without!

Let's start by saying the ice is great. This will save you all the trips to Sonic/CFA if you're an ice addict like me. Unfortunately, the longevity of these is questionable at best. I bought this unit last year to replace the OG Opal I bought from FirstBuild back in 2015. That unit lasted until 2020 when the pump went out. I replaced that and it chugged along until 2021 when the compressor quit. The cost of the compressor was almost $400 so I decided to just buy a new ice maker instead. The first replacement was so loud out of the box that I took it back to exchange it 3 days later. You could literally hear the thing running from another floor and the other side of the house. This unit ran flawlessly until this week - exactly one week from it being a year old. I routinely cleaned it as recommended by GE. I use only distilled water in the unit. The quality of these seems to have drastically reduced since GE took over. Look, we have that famous name-brand fridge everyone has the defective ice maker so this IS our ice. To say that we're disappointed that this thing failed less than a year after purchasing it is an understatement. Hopefully GE's warranty comes through and repairs (replaces?) this unit but in the meantime, I'm currently looking at spending $$$$ on a new fridge with a working icemaker. $600+ for a standalone icemaker breaking in less than a year is unacceptable.

The GE Icemaker has been an excellent appliance that we recently added to our countertop. It has made our life easier by providing a steady supply of ice cubes, which is especially useful during hot summer days. The icemaker is compact, yet efficient, and fits perfectly on our kitchen counter. Overall, we are very satisfied with our purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and easy-to-use icemaker.

PERFECT ICE QUICK EASY SETUP SOLID UNIT FITS UNDER THE CABINETS

Makes nugget ice fast. The side tank is a must for the cost, filling up the maker itself would be annoying. Wifi enabled is nice, allows you to schedule not to run at certain times (night) if you have a smaller house. Not terribly loud.

It doesn’t take long to make the ice. The machine isn’t loud, and is the perfect size! I recommend the spare tank if you use a lot of ice. The machine knows when it’s running low on ice and water, and will make ice automatically and tell you when it needs more water. Cleaning is very easy.

It makes the most excellent ice. I've used it for about a month now. The motor is noticeable, but not terrible. And you can always turn it off for a while. The side tank is very convenient. Cleaning is manageable - I watched a YouTube video - that was very helpful.

This ice maker was nicely designed and looks great. It takes awhile to get ice once the setup is done. The nugget ice is actually quite good with high quality. The only conns I can report about this are as follow: 1- Makes noise while making ice. 2- Regular cleaning which will require at least 30 minutes every other week or so. 3- This machine requires distilled water which costs extra money.

Okay, this review is at almost the one year mark and I've used it daily since I bought it. Pros: Fantastic ice!! I mean just wonderful, crunchy, soft, great on teeth kind of awesomeness! It's the best ice I've ever had and I always have drinks with ice. I'm getting much older and my teeth have paid the price for chewing ice. Well, with this ice you should no longer worry about it. It's that good. The ice maker also does a decent job of keeping up with demand even when people are over. I'm cruching some with my tea as I write this. Neither pro nor con: I've read people's comments on the maker doesn't keep the ice frozen in the bin. Well, that is by design people! It can't keep it frozen or it would no longer be soft ice but turn into McDonald's ice that stays in your cup for 3 days and will break every tooth if you crunch it! It's by design. The ice melts and runs back through and becomes new ice. Cons: Okay, here's the bad parts. This machine is loud. It's too noisy to leave in the kitchen (at least ours). It does say it's rather noisy on the GE site and believe it. To me, that's okay as the ice is way worth it. The normal working noise isn't over the top though, it's just louder than you would expect for an appliance. The really bad part is if you get the squealing kind of noises mine has developed. I mean just ridiculously loud squealing. Loud enough that I finally recorded it and sent it in to customer service loud. I got a return label and they shipped me a remanufactured one (a couple of weeks ago). This was at like the 8 month mark. The new one is now starting to develop a squeal so as I'm almost at the one year mark (warranty), I'm not sure what to do. GE also tells me to use distilled water but I gotta tell you, all I do is fill the side tank at least once a day. That's a lot of distilled water to pay for after dishing out $600 for an ice maker. I've not done that. I use filtered water and maybe the minerals are what's doing the squealing. Not sure. So, should you get one? I'm just not sure. $600 is a ton of money to me. Have I enjoyed the ice? Absolutely!! Been wonderul!! But, a one year ice machine for $600... No. My wife even told me we need to put it in the utility room because it's so loud. That's pitiful isn't it? So, I just don't know. Dangit though, the ice is amazing.

It works great. Easy to put together too. I love the app that connects to it too. It does make some noise but does not seem loud to us. My only complaint would be is you have to use a cup or funnel to refill the side tank. I would recommend it just for the type of ice it makes and ease of cleaning.

Ordering Opal number three. No other countertop ice maker compares. BUY the warranty! The first time I bought this unit I saw multiple reviews noting something will fail within a couple of years and that's what has happened. I starting using distilled water in unit 2, apparently that didn't help but it's made the cleaning much easier.

Love it! It makes the best ice and makes it fast! My only reason for deducting 1 star was because of how often it needs cleaning and descaling. It’s time consuming. Other than that, this is the VERY BEST personal ice maker out there if you like that soft pellet ice. This is my second machine as I bought the first make of the machine and had it for 4.5 years. This updated version is even better!!! I’m an ice chewer and this ice is perfect!!! I’m obsessed!!!

The ice is outstanding. It produces ice quickly once turned on. The cleaning process takes a bit of time, but is not complicated. I definitely recommend the model with the side tank.

Super great product howver the only issue is the cleaning taking all the tubes apart to get into the nitty gritty can be a pain. Over all love love love the ice machine. Used daily!

This is by far the absolute best kitchen appliance I have ever owned (or used) in my life! I know many will feel as though it’s a bit of a splurge, given the price, but once you begin to look into it closer, you’ll realize it’s actually very fairly priced against its competitors-especially given all the wonderful features this ice machine has. This specific model has the additional extra large water tank already added onto it, so it can make more ice quicker and with less refills. It also has a very cool Wi-Fi feature that connects to your home Wi-Fi and has additional features via a free downloadable app available on iOS and android devices that allows you to fully control and customize settings for your ice machine right from your device. This can be helpful if you’re in a situation where you’re going to need extra ice, as you can use the app to make it produce full capacity ice from anywhere so that once you return home, your machine will be full and ready to go. It also makes the widely loved ‘Sonic ice’ that are the tiny, less dense ball shaped pieces of ice that are loved for their excellent chewability by those who enjoy eating ice, but it’s also more effective at cooling down your drinks, due to its size and shape, so that your entire cup is the same cold temperature rather than only the very top being cold like traditional ice cubes. You also have the added convenience of an excellent water filtration system on the machine, so it fully filters out and removes any impurities and imperfections from the water before going to the freezing compartment of the machine, giving you perfectly tasting, filtered ice every time. The water filter is also very easy to replace, with replacement filters being very inexpensive as well as lasting for several months, depending on your use (the app will let you know when the filter needs replacing) This machine also pumps out ice at an exceptional rate; with the ability to make ~50lbs of ice per day. It’s also an extremely quiet machine, making virtually zero noise. It’s also quite well made, with the ice bucket being a clear bin that you can pull out and use the provided ice scoop to collect ice from, which allows you to always visually see how much ice is currently in the bin, but despite this design, it doesn’t have any trouble keeping the ice perfectly frozen at all times, so you don’t have to worry about it thawing out or leaking ever. The machine itself is also just a beautiful, elegant design that’s both modern and classic at the same time. It has a wonderful night time illuminated mode to where the bin itself is illuminated in blue LED lights just like the large round mode button and the ‘hidden’ touch buttons on the machine are. Compared to other similar ice makers, this one is not only 2-3 times larger and able to make 5 times more ice, but it has several additional features and is very well made and produced by a quality, reputable manufacturer that’s been making kitchen appliances for decades rather than some random company you’ve never heard of-and it only costs about $100 more than those cheap ones you’ll see on Amazon. So I definitely recommend this item if you’re interested; it’s a great investment that you’ll love and use for years and years without any issues (and in the unlikely case you do have an issue, GE stands by their product with a great warranty)

We love this machine and the ice that it makes. This is our 2nd Opal, after our first one died at 8 years old. We got it with the Geek Squad protection plan because of this. Boy, have we needed it. Our second one died and was replaced by GE after owning it 10 months; this one (number 3) is dead after 13 months. If we could get one like our first one, that would be great! Again, when it’s working, it makes the best ice

If you are looking for nugget ice and don't want to spend thousands of dollars, this is the best solution. The Opal produces plenty of crunchy ice for 3-4 people each day without having to store any in the freezer. It is attractive and looks fine on any kitchen or bar counter. Since it's self contained, the tank required filling every day or two, depending on usage. The only negative (hence only 4 stars) is the noise level. Not bad, but comparable to a coffee maker brewing---louder than a new quiet dishwasher. Luckily, the noise only occurs when the unit is making ice, but that may be most of the time on a hot day. After a week, we've decided the noise is well worth the convenience and luxury of having great ice.

I was hesitant in purchasing because of some of the reviews, but decided to do so. I am glad I did. You won't run out of ice ever! The ice is smaller than the "good ice" but it is still like it. I have this machine on day and night (my daughter loves to eat ice). I like to have gatherings and it is perfect when making drinks. You have the option to purchase a filter for it. If you do, make sure that the filter is on correctly or the machine will not make ice. You will have to fidget with the filter until it starts to make the ice. There are also times when I refill the water tank and the "add water" lights up. I just open and close the ice drawer and it starts to make ice. It does make noise but it's not unbearable. I will definitely purchase again if anything happens to the one I have. It is a great investment.
