Customers are saying

Customers appreciate the Opal 2.0's excellent ice quality and overall performance, frequently praising its ease of use and attractive design. However, some users find the machine noisy and require regular maintenance, including filter replacements and descaling. The water tank capacity and the need for frequent sanitization are also points of concern for some customers. While the compact size is a plus for many, others find the weight to be a significant drawback.

    Good Ice Machine

The GE Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker is not what I expected, it's much better. I thought the "nuggets" would be the size of half an ice cube but they look like small little barrels and it is like using crushed ice without having to crush it. First, the packaging was great and it arrived in great condition. The instructions are easy to understand and follow and there weren't any issues getting it ready to work. This ice machine is being kept in the kitchen of the church where I work part-time as there is never ice when I want it as someone always uses what I bring. There is also no air conditioning in the kitchen so the room temperature can get up to 80 degrees. An issue came up when the nuggets started melting as soon as they were released and there was more water than ice and it took longer to freeze than anticipated. Checking the manual, I found that the temperature of the room the machine is in was on the high end of the temperature scale (up to 90 degrees) and I did use bottled water that had been sitting out at room temperature. I contacted GE support and they were quick to respond even though it was the afternoon of the day before a holiday. While waiting for the holiday to pass, I tried different things and found that by putting the bottled water in the fridge overnight, it gave me great quality nuggets. I've been using cold water every day since and have had no further issues, including the nuggets being made in the expected timeframe. We have a free meal once a week at the church and there were no issues making enough ice for everyone to have something cold to drink, a bonus with this heat. Overall, I'm extremely happy with this ice machine.

    Noisy, Well-Built, Great Ice

This was my first crack at an icemaker not built into my fridge door. It goes well with the rest of my GE kitchen appliances. It has a couple bumps, but otherwise produces some great ice. First, it's a lot bigger than you expect it to be. It takes up a lot of counter space. It's not very wide, but it's DEEP. Second, and biggest knock in my opinion is just how noisy it is. When this thing is running you not only hear ice falling, but a fan whirring, and the condenser kicking in to keep it cold. It is not ideal if your kitchen and living space are close to one another. It has wifi built-in and can connect to the GE Smart HQ app. What does this mean? Not a lot really. I was able to setup a schedule for it to make ice from 8a to 8p, but there's really not much else useful about the app. The device has a side tank that you end up having to fill about daily when you have a family of 4 using it. It makes ice, then recycles the melted water back into ice. So it's pretty efficient in that regard. The family loves the nugget ice, but complains about the noise. If it wasn't inconvenient to do so, I'd move it to the garage. I would carefully recommend it to others based on their kitchen alignment to their living space.

    A Festive Ice Maker

I've been using this ice maker for just over a week and have been able to test it out at my son's graduation party. The ice maker has a lot of great features and works great. Here are my thoughts: My first thoughts were whether an ice maker that you only turn on when you need ice would be able to keep up with the ice production. The answer is that it can and does. After turning it on the first batch of ice comes out in under 10 minutes. It is soft and runny because the machine is not cooled down yet but after about 30 minutes there is enough ice for a couple of drinks. And after an hour, the ice maker is nearly full. It shuts off when full and then starts again each time you take ice out. Another really cool feature is the app that goes with it. I have similar apps for my coffee maker, vacuum cleaner, and a few other appliances and they have never been very useful. Many of them you have to be in the house with the appliance on to use. The app for this ice maker is very useful. You can turn the ice maker on while you are not at home. For example, we were out hiking the other day and I turned the ice maker on before we left the park. When we got home the ice bin was already half full. As far as the quality of the ice goes, it is probably personal preference. The small nuggets remind me of movie theater ice. The only negative I found is that when the ice melts a bit all of the small nuggets can form a barrier at the top of the drink. If you are not using a straw it takes a little getting used to but overall it is a fun shape and it seems to make people happy because it is so different than normal freezer ice. Other than that, a few things to know about the ice maker. It is kind of large and takes up a lot of counter space. For my counters, it was too tall to fit under the cabinets so I placed it on a small table in the corner of the room. Also, the setup isn't too difficult but it was a little confusing just reading the startup guide. It took me about two hours to set it up and do the initial cleaning. It will require cleaning again after 25 hours of use. Overall, this is a great ice machine that can add spark to your day or to any party. I definitely recommend it.

This ice machine came at the perfect time! I was having issues with my main ice maker and I was getting worried. I need ice! Ice is a must have in my house and the opal ice maker shows up. Setting up the machine is not complicated but involved. Get everything out of the box and wash all the pieces. Assemble everything but the water tank and run a couple of cleaning cycles with a bleach mixture. Once it's all set up it does start making ice in under 10 minutes. You will however need to wait about an hour til you have a good volume of it. If you are a person who love to munch on ice, this is the nugget maker you need! It is also perfect if you want to make slushies and smoothies. The ice is perfect for blending and gives you the perfect consistency. It maintains a bin of "soft" ice. It is constantly remaking new ice if the old ice melts too much. There is no cooling of the bin where the ice drops. (which I wish there was) I just empty the bin into my main freezer for extra "hard" ice. This ice maker is a must have if you entertain. I hooked it up to wifi but don't see the need for it yet. I just have it on - on the counter, I don't need to schedule when to make ice. Notifications if there is a problem could be nice. The opal has 2 other cycles, descale and sanitize. You will need to run those based on use and water hardness. The option to have a filter in the water reservoir is a great feature, keeps your ice tasting clear and fresh. It's a bit spendy but If you want a bit of luxury in your kitchen, this is the next appliance to get.

    NUGGET ICE IS GREAT!

Very Good Machine, had the original machine for about 5 years, and although it got noisy at times it was well worth it. Once the old one crapped out, we decided we definitely needed a new one since the Nugget Ice is the best. This machine is definitely a lot quieter, for how long, who knows, but it beats having to use cubed ice from the Freezer. With this machine being on sale for Black Friday as well, makes it better!.

Prior to receiving the GE Profile 2.0 Opal Nugget Ice Maker, we owned the GE Opal 1.0 model. The 2.0 model is significantly better than the 1.0 model. It makes great nugget ice, and it makes it fast. The ice nugget is a little softer than what is produced by the 1.0 model, which is nice. There is a cleanable air filter that keeps debris from accumulating inside of the ice maker. There is also a replaceable water filter that reduces the accumulation of scale buildup in the machine. It comes with a stainless-steel scoop that can be mounted on the side of the ice maker. There is a built in led light that illuminates the ice storage bin. This model is also quieter than the previous model. It is WIFI capable that connects to the GE SmartHQ app on your phone where you can control the ice maker, and set up schedules based on when you want it to run and make ice. Overall, it is a great product and I am extremely happy with it. If you are looking for a countertop nugget ice maker, the GE Profile 2.0 Opal Ultra Nugget Ice Maker would be a great choice.

This is the second GE Profile ice maker we have owned. The first one was great but was worn out because of age and high usage. The new Opal 2.0 is wonderful and we have enjoyed the additional Side Tank which makes water filling requirement much easier. We give it a five star review!

This icemaker is a pain in the rear to clean, but when it works, it makes fantastic ice. I’ve grown so used to this style of ice that I can’t live without it. I have had two of them fail/break in a year and a half. The first one failed from leaking internally in the machine, and the second one because it would not get out of defrost mode despite all of the troubleshooting and resetting from GE. Thank goodness for the Best Buy warranty. I need to find a better option than just getting this one replaced.

    Poor value considering the price

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

At this price, you would think the build quality would be better. After a couple of weeks, it started making a noise which got worse over time. Contacting GE "support" is a joke. If you want ANY response at all, you must call them. After jumping through hoops and them telling you that you have to stand on your head and stack BBs, they agreed to send a replacement. Unfortunately, they chose to send someone elses defective returned unit as a replacement. Scratched up, randomly turns off, impossible to turn back on until unplugged... This also defective USED system they sent as a replacement evidently burns your one and only advance replacement. I don't know why they thought sending a broken used device was a suitable replacement for a defective new unit, but here we are. It takes WEEKS for them to figure out what they want to do and they are less than understanding when all the customer wants is a product that works. Again, at this price point, you would think that they would be more customer service oriented but I get the feeling we are nothing more than an annoyance. I believe you would get a better value from a less expensive product because after the way GE has treated me, I can assure you that I will not be purchasing another GE product.

"Add water" forever on cleanest device ever.

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I think I have more of a question about the Ultra model. I have had the base model, it quit working. Then the 2.0, we decided to use bleach and vinegar and other things, it still works, but does the strangling cat. So we bought the wifi one thinking when it says "add water" I could just use the app to set it to restart every 15 minutes forever, which I did, but even that eventually stopped working. Now I think I have over cleaned the eyes that determine it needs water when in fact it is full, and was wondering if maybe I could have a conversation with the engineering team before I consider buying a 4th so I can get some assurances I will NEVER see the words "add water" while looking at water in a full bin of water again in my wet watery life. I would like to leave a deep deep lasting impression on each and every one of them so they can rethink their design, or maybe get tips on bypassing the eyes.

Very loud squeaking from the start. Attempted to claim a repair under warranty. Was difficult to get ge to respond at all. After weeks of jumping through a bunch of hoops including sending multiple videos of the noise I was told this is normal. The squeaking is very loud and can be heard through walls and closed doors. Based on the number of videos I found online,I believe this to be known issue. Disappointed in ge’s response.

My daughter purchased this for us last May 6, 2024. This past April it started acting up. They told her to do this, do that. You will have to have someone come look at it. Didnt even have it one year and would not let us return for a new one. 500+ for an ice maker that didn’t last a year and wouldnt give you a new one. So it is sitting in a box and we will eventually have to throw it away. Very disappointed. If a product can’t last a year, its junk!

DO NOT BUY! I’ve had this ice maker for over a year. During this time, the Add Water light came even though the water container was full. I called GE customer service to get help. I accomplished all the troubleshooting steps the representative asked and the machine still didn’t work. The machine was out of Best Buy’s warranty but within GE’s warranty. They did replace the machine, but they don’t make it easy. A little over a month later I received a replacement. I’ve had it for a month and guess what. The ADD WATER fault happened with this machine too!! Ugh… Again, DO NOT BUY! The ice maker costs too much to have this problem.
