    Not for everybody

While the Google Cast does let you stream application specific content to a HDTV, it doesn't allow you to mirror your tablet (Samsung Note 10.1) display on the TV. Only certain apps are Google Cast ready which leaves the built-in apps unable to cast to the TV. It's still too early to tell if very many apps will adopt the GC's technology, which could fade away like so many good intentions, leaving us with another unsupported piece of useless hardware. Just make sure your specific apps are listed on Google Cast website before you purchase this solution. And, whats up with turning my TV into a giant slide show feature? Google could have used the internal programming to making the device work with all apps including the Android operating system, maybe? Sorry, I just can't give a thumbs up.

Does not offer best bang for buck

I tried out the beta laptop screen mirroring option. It is not working well yet at all. Someday, when device mirroring is really possible, chromecast will be very much worth it. But today is not that day. Look up xbmc on youtube and the kind of things you can do with that program. Chromecast will not let you use that program (very well anyway) right now. You can find miracast/widi adapters for only $50 sometimes when on sale which lets you mirror your entire screen so any program can be projected (including xbmc). Only $15 initial cost difference but in the end, it will actually save you much more money since you probably won't need to have so many paid subscriptions. Note, miracast/widi is easy on android 4.2 or above devices but harder to setup on laptops cause the laptop must have the right drivers on it and be widi compatible. In summary, if you are a plug and play type person, I'd go with chromecast or an android xbmc box (I'd pick the android xbmc box myself unless you are broke#. But if you are moderately computer literate, willing to spend some time to get things working if you end up having problems, and have android 4.2 or widi compatible devices, I'd get a miracast/widi adapter (from a famous company who will more likely update their drivers often).

    Makes Watching TV Easier

I got this device to keep from having to turn on a smart blu ray player or gaming system to watch Netflix, etc. I wound up getting one for all the TVs as the kids always have iphone/ipads to use with Netflix. Most people will not have any issues with setup, but I have a Sonicwall due to work as my router, calling Google for support was worthless, I wound up finding the solution on the Sonicwall forums. Ironically what I found was that the simpler the router, the easier it is to setup the Chromecast.

The unit gets kind of hot when used. Also it needs like HBOGO, Hulu+, or lots of your own Google pictures/videos to be useful.

Not what I had hoped for

I bought one of these before Xmas and am disappointed with its performance. I had been using my laptop to watch internet content on my TV via a VGA or HDMI cable and wanted to eliminate the need for the cable. This device does that but the streaming is terrible as the picture is jumpy and really unpleasant to try to watch. I tried it with EPIX and Hulu as well as random other websites with no difference. I went back to my cable method and it works fine. It may be because I am using an older laptop and TV (both about 6 years old) but the product information does not say that one needs a newer system. I also tried it with a new desktop computer but this computer is located too far away from the TV to work. The on screen instructions for the device do specify that the controlling device needs to be within 20 feet of the TV and this computer is about 25 feet away and in another room.

    Great concept needs more content

I bought one when they announced it and if you figure the 3 months ($24) Netflix credit this thing was basically $11... I plugged it up in my daughters room to her LCD TV.... I have a Sony Google TV Bluray player in the living room and a Vizio M series TV in my bedroom. With Google TV and the Vizio M series TV they all do the same things that the Chromecast does but at a much higher price... If your in the market for a new TV then you can just get a high quality smart TV that you can send Youtube & Netflix directly to your TV.. If you have a few movies in your Google play account then this is an added bonus.. The only reason I give this 3 stars is the content is basically limited to Netflix, Youtube (both of which I could already send from my tablet to my TV without Chromecast) and Google Play... I've been waiting over 3 years for Google TV to get a Hulu dedicated app.... If Chromecast can get Hulu, Amazon prime and a few other content providers on board this thing would be 5 stars easy... but basically limited to Google products makes it limited right now.. Great concept love where Google is headed with their TV products to go along side their tablets and phones...

I don't get all the hype

Let me be clear - there is nothing wrong with the Chromecast, but I think there are a lot of better options out there. What Chromecast has is a very inexpensive niche. But, in some ways, you get what you pay for. To me, the coolest feature of the Chromecast is the ability to control it through my phone. It's a selling point to me - but for someone like my mother and her boyfriend who can barely figure out text messaging, that would be a significant downside. I purchased a Roku box for them a couple of Christmas's ago, since that interface is pretty user friendly. I brought over my Chromecast and they were completely baffled by it. It is nice that I can take it with me - but the setup process is far from seamless. I have not had a time where the Chromecast was able to detect my network and phone correctly the first time. It's an easy fix, but it's a little annoying.
