The product managers at Google should fire themselves. Nest used to be the most advanced camera with great usability both hardware and software… now under Google they can’t even get the basics right. The Google Home app is a giant waste of time and is a downgrade from the regular Nest app. People who think these cameras are great likely never owned the original nest cameras before Google took over. Really sad to see what was once such a great brand die a slow and painful death. At least just abandon the whole “Nest” thing altogether to remove all hope that it will get better so we can get on with replacing our Nest devices with something else.

The new Nest cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience. Our long term plan is to use the Google Home app as the one place you can control all of your favorite Nest and other smart home devices, as well as Google Assistant. In the near future, we’ll allow users to set up previous Nest devices and have full control in the Home app. Users with older cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cams. Our team is working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app so all of your cameras can be set up and controlled in one place.

Pathetic detection

This is probably the worst of em all. I have been using it for last 2 months. I installed the camera near my pond because I suspected animal activity and wanted to understand what was going on. There were 0 activities detected by this cameras. What's more surprising is I installed a Ring spotlight camera next to this to see if it was the camera. Ring captured family of 4 raccoons apart from possums and a cat visiting the pond at night while the nest camera which was right next to it detected 0 events! I have enabled alerts on the nest cam from animal activity to motion detection.

Nest Cam (Battery) motion detection can be affected by changes in the light level, and shadows moving across the frame like when a cloud moves in front of the sun. This also includes other movements within the camera's field of view like trees or bushes swaying. If you're not getting any alerts or notifications, we recommend trying out the steps below:
1. Change the Activity Zones on your camera. You can delete your existing Activity Zone and create a new one in any area within your camera's field of view. Just make sure that none of the zones you create overlap.
2. Change the angle of your camera and account for the lighting in the surrounding area.
3. Restart your Camera.

Also only records when you are viewing the camera in the Google Home app. I took these back and lucked out in finding the Nest Outdoor camera and hardwired it to an outlet which provides constant monitoring.

The products are a dead end with almost incremental improvement or updates from Google. Functionality is limited to a few convenient use cases but lacks many key features with no options for expansion or to use the cameras outside of googles system. Very difficult to review or export footage and due to cloud aspect video is seldom available in real time when it can be important. I definitely would not depend on this stuff for security. We will be installing a real camera system

Camera is fine, the Google App is not

Nest App was far better and easier to use. IDK how Google can buy Nest yet not use the Nest App. Or at least copy it. I might end up returning these because I like the Nest App far much better and go with something else. Google, fix this. I mean, you are Google!!
