Nest WAS the best; now it's time to try the rest.

For the first time ever, I am extremely disappointed in Nest. This camera refuses to integrate with the Nest app, instead opting to function within the Google Home app. This can lead to a clunky and slow experience, especially in households that utilize numerous smart-home devices. Image quality is okay at best; needless to say, it's significantly lower than what I'd expect at this price point. Additionally, infrared / night mode quality is abysmal. The IR light seems much less evenly distributed than my older Nest products, causing the image to wash out easily. Varying levels of ambient light didn't seem to resolve the issue to an acceptable level. Finally, while on-device processing seems great in theory, my usage so far indicates that the device is prone to missing numerous events. Entire days have gone buy thus far where the camera hasn't captured a single clip simply because it didn't realize a human had walked by. I tried to mitigate this by setting the camera to save footage 24/7, but I am currently uncertain if this is even possible unless the device is hardwired.

Hi BLiT, we appreciate you sharing the details of your experience with using the Nest Cam (Battery) and we’re sorry that it’s been difficult for you.

We’re aware that longtime Nest users enjoy viewing their Nest camera feeds from the Nest app. Our teams are working on enabling the ability to set up and control older Nest cameras in the Home app so users will have one app to control all of their devices, and we’re working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app as we want to create an integrated experience with other Nest and smart home devices.

You can adjust the video quality settings and let you choose how much of your internet connection gets used by your Google Nest camera or doorbell to stream live video. The higher the quality setting is, the more bandwidth is used.

Also, Night Vision video quality can be affected by internet speed and other issues. But, most Night Vision specific issues are caused by your camera’s infrared light that reflects off a surface near your camera, like a shelf, window, window screen, or wall. You’ll find some helpful tips that may improve the night vision video quality here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9259738

Lastly, your camera runs algorithms to process video and audio data so it can determine whether it detected something you might want to know about. If you only need your camera to detect people, animals, or moving vehicles, we recommend that you do not turn on the basic motion and sound detection feature. You might have to move your camera, change your camera’s angle, or change something in the scene so that you don’t miss important activity and choose which events your camera can detect and record.

We care about your experience and we’re taking your feedback seriously to work on improving our products and services. If you’re willing, you may visit us anytime at the following link and we’d be happy to help: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Hi there, user198543. We appreciate your feedback on the Nest Cam (battery), and we’re sorry to hear about your experience with some of your cameras.

Checking for objects such as mirrors and refrigerators between the cameras and your router can help, as these items could block the connection. If you have a good Wi-Fi connection but the camera is offline, this can happen if the device gets too hot or too cold, and can be avoided by these:
      - Your camera should not be exposed to direct sunlight
      - Avoid placing your camera near objects that can cause overheating like light bulbs, lamps, large equipment/appliances, air vents, etc. Your camera needs good air circulation. Never install it in any kind of small box or enclosure as this can cause overheating.
      - If mounted outdoors, you can install it under an eave or overhang, or even install a small shade above it.

If the issue persists, you can contact our dedicated team directly through our support channels here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Major Downgrade from Prior Version -- Garbage!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It is mind blowing that Google would launch such utter garbage. This camera is lightyears BEHIND the previous versions (IQ and even the original nest outdoor, which were and still are excellent products). The app support and user experience are atrocious. The video quality is poor. The battery life is poor. The integration with other Nest products is terrible. What was Google thinking? Since migrating Nest over to Google home, it has been a steady downhill slide. After investing MANY THOUSANDS in the nest ecosystem for my home, Google has bastardized the entire platform. Such a terrible disappointment in this hardware AND the changes Google is making to the platform/ecosystem/experience. They should have left a good thing alone, but instead ruined something that didn't need to be fixed in the first place.

Hi SGFL1979, thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear that the Google Home app, video quality and battery life for Nest Cam (Battery) didn't meet your expectations.

We wanted to use the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices, and Google Assistant. It offers you a lot more benefits since you have access to Google´s security features as well. If you´re willing to try, you may set up your other Nest cameras to the Google Home app. Here´s a guide that you can follow to set up your Nest cameras on the Google Home app: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9893532

The video quality issues you are experiencing may be caused by connectivity issues in your network. Here are some suggested troubleshooting steps you can try out:
      - Check your Nest camera's distance from the router or access point.
      - Restart your Nest Cam (Battery). Locate the reset button on the back of the camera. Press and hold for 5 seconds. Your camera will restart, and the status light will be steady, solid white.
      - Restart your router.
      - Check for interference. Almost every network is subject to wireless interference which can cause problems when connecting your camera to the Google Home app. Check for any wireless interference that may be caused by thick walls and floors, competing Wi-Fi networks, from other electronics in your home.
      - Check for possible congestion. Removing some of your devices that's connected to your network may help relieve some bandwidth space.

Nest Cam's battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. You can extend the battery life of your camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Here are some typical scenarios:
      - Busy - About 1.5 months battery life (about 20 - 25 recorded events per day)
      - Typical - About 3 months battery life (about 9 - 12 recorded events per day)
      - Quiet - About 7 months battery life (about 2 - 4 recorded events per day)

We'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have with Nest Cam (Battery). You my speak to any of our support agents here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

This camera is designed to be placed at 6-6.5 feet high. Just the right height for someone to grab it and walk off with it; it's only attached by a magnet! What google engineer thought this was a good design for a security camera? It's laughable. The Nest app is good but this camera will not work in it... It only works in the google app which does not support all Nest products. If you have Nest smoke detectors you will need to have two app. The google app is more annoying than worthwhile. The Nest app will send a notification and image from cameras to my watch. All new Nest cams are not supported in the Nest app so you must use the google one which sends notifications but no images to my watch. Who at google thought it was a good idea to annoy customers by notifying them but making them NEED to open the app to see an image?!?!? That one image lets me know if it is someone I know, don't know, or a delivery. The google app is a joke.

    These are not Nest cameras

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do not purchase these cameras. They are sold and marketed as Nest products, but they are not. Google has used the Nest name to sell inferior products. I purchased two of these cameras during the pre-order period and I did not have the benefit of reading reviews. I was also not aware that there was only a 15 day return period and Google will not let me return them (I was late by a day). I purchased the cameras directly from Google and not from Best Buy. The cameras do not work with the Nest app. You have to use the Google Home app, which provides limited functionality compared to the Nest app. You also can't view these cameras on a computer - only through the app. The picture quality is not as good as the Nest cameras I have. The camera always seems to want to go into night mode even during the middle of the day. When you zoom in on the picture it becomes heavily pixelated due to the low resolution. The cameras are marketed as battery powered and wireless, but if you don't plug the cameras into an outlet you cannot have 24/7 recording like a true Nest camera does. I would not recommend these cameras to anyone that already has Nest cameras as you will not be happy with them.

Hi there, we really appreciate you for sharing your feedback about the Nest Cam (Battery). We’re sorry to learn of your issues and with its features, with its functionality in the Google Home app, and with the return period.

While the new Nest cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Google Home app, users with previous versions of Nest cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cams. We understand that long time Nest users enjoy viewing their Nest camera feeds from the Nest app and web app, however, our priority with this launch was to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest speakers and displays, and to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant.

Also, you can adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use. For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). Please check the steps below:
      - Open the Home app Google Home app.
      - Select your camera.
      - Tap Settings Video.
      - Under “Video quality,” tap High.

We’ll make sure to share your feedback along with the right team to work on improving our products and services. In the meantime, we’d like to learn more about how we can provide a better experience for you, and if you’re willing to get in touch with us, feel free to find us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

I had these cameras for over two days know and here what I can tell you: * Terrible Batter life - Only two days and my battery is down to 64%. This is not intended to be used with a battery. Must be plugged or google needs to release solar panels soon as they stated earlier. * With maximized sensitivity and every object (Human, Animal, Vehicle) recognition is enabled; Humans only gets recognized if you come to a halt. If you never stop walking then camera never recognizes you and never triggers an event. Not once recognized a vehicle. * Single charging cable. Do not buy double package because of this. Order single ones if you plan on doing so to get charging cables per camera. Surely google didnt do enough testing on these prior to releasing it. Its so sad that the only reason I bought them is because of the brand name behind them. Google is keep failing me on product quality and usability. These products are garbage.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear about the poor experience you have with the battery life, object recognition and charging cable that come with your Nest Cam (Battery).

To detect anything besides a person, animal, or moving vehicle, your Nest Cam (Battery) checks for general motion in the scene. It learns what’s normally in its background view and looks for movement and changes. As a result, it can sometimes trigger not just for important things, but also for minor things like tree branches swaying in the wind. If you don't have an active Nest Aware subscription, we recommend getting one. With Nest Aware, your camera uses advanced algorithms to pick out different kinds of activity. This makes the alerts you receive to your phone, tablet, or email even more helpful.

You may also set up Activity Zones so that your camera will only record in the zones that you’ve enabled. This allows you to ignore busy or unimportant areas of your scene. For more information, simply visit this page: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9207697

I must say setup has gave me hard time. Google home points me to Nest app and Nest sends me back to google home. After whole day of circling back and forth it started working. Video quality is 1080 I believe and it has sleep mode which saves the battery. I would rank this as middle level camera. Magnetic mount is impressive strong and very good job in there. I am using this inside of my garage because lots of time we forgot to close the garage door, and for that purpose itself is good enough.

Battery life measured in hours not months

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased a two pack of the Nest outdoor cameras. Charged the 1st to 100% and mounted in a low traffic area. I adjusted the settings to maximize battery life. I did this on a mildly warm day. In the span of 6 hours the battery was down to 50%. This with around 6-7 alerts. I watched it drop rapidly (10% or so) when the camera was on ‘idle’ and not recording any events. I have a Nest Protect. Since I do, the setup process forces you to use the Nest Protect to set up the camera. This is a hit or miss proposition. I had to try a few times on the first camera until I was successful. For the second camera I could not get it to sync with my Nest Protect. There is no direct way to set up the camera if you own a Nest Protect—one that was obvious anyway. I wish I had the many hours I sunk into this product back. The box with the two cams will be returned to the store tomorrow. Don’t make my mistake—skip these. There are other options (which I will be checking out).

Hi there Snakmagic, thanks for choosing Google Nest products. We´re sorry to hear about the battery and set up issue you are experiencing with Nest Cam (Battery). It is unfortunate that you are planning to return them.

Battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. Users can extend the battery life of their camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Here are some typical scenarios for your Nest Cam (Battery):
Busy: About 1.5 months battery life (about 20 - 25 recorded events per day)
Typical: About 3 months battery life (about 9 - 12 recorded events per day)
Quiet: About 7 months battery life (about 2 - 4 recorded events per day)

We recommend checking the frequency of events (per day) that you get with your Nest Cam (Battery). If the short battery life isn´t related to the frequency of events, then we may need to have a closer look at your device and understand what may be causing it. We may also need to take a closer look at your Nest Cam (Battery) and take a closer look at the set up issue you are experiencing. Google shows their hand, they're not interested in continuing the Nest Labs legacy any further as these cameras mark a pivot to collecting not only your data but only that which they want. Previously you could at least justify a subscription to stream uninterrupted CCTV feeds from your cameras NO MORE. You only get what Google algorithms determine to be of interest. I've not had a single activity detected and yet my last generation Nest cams picked them all up. NIGHT VISION SUCKS and is totally pointless and clearly not a software fix down the road as Google has now release a ridiculous dual flood light cam. Why? Not to scare off criminals or squirrels, no it's to allow their crappy camera aperture to take over from the night vision which they skimped on to make room for onboard processing. WHY? Because they don't want to process your data they are taking, take takes money and cycles so why not make you do it, claim battery powered, but hide the fact it's not a CCTV it's a motion triggered only and then google decided motion.

Hi BradScalio, thanks for sharing your experience with us Nest Cam (Battery). It's unfortunate to hear about your concerns with how we collect your data, and the changes we made with the features for our Google Nest products.

We value both your data and privacy, and that we've taken great measures to make sure both are well guarded. You can learn more about how we manage your privacy by visiting this FAQ page:  https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9415830

Your Nest Cam (battery) can accommodate up to 10 days of continuous video recording (CVR) and 24/7 video history if hardwired to power, and subscribed to Nest Aware Plus ($12 a month for all your cameras, speakers, and displays on the same home structure).

Motion detection for your Nest Cam (Battery) can be affected by changes in the light level, and shadows moving across the frame like when a cloud moves in front of the sun. This also includes other movements within the camera's field of view like trees or bushes swaying. If you're not getting any alerts or notifications, we recommend trying out the steps below:
      1. Change the Activity Zones on your camera. You can delete your existing Activity Zone and create a new one in any area within your camera's field of view. Just make sure that none of the zones you create overlap.
      2. Change the angle of your camera and account for the lighting in the surrounding area.
      3. Restart your Camera.

Night Vision video quality can be affected by internet speed and other issues, but most Night Vision specific issues are caused by the camera’s infrared light that reflects off a surface near the camera, like a shelf, window, window screen, or wall. Here are some recommended steps that may be helpful with the issue:
      - Clean the lens with a soft cloth that’s made for cleaning optics. Dust, thumbprints, and dirt can cause poor image quality.
      - Turn your camera so that any nearby surfaces or objects (like a wall) are out of view.
      - Use the Google Home app to Zoom and Enhance and crop out surfaces or objects that may be the cause of the glare.
      - If a bright white shape along the edge appears while everything else is too dark, there might be a surface that’s too close in your camera’s view (like a wall). Angle your camera so the surface stays out of view.
      - Move nearby objects that may reflect the infrared light.

Should not be called a Google "Nest" Camera Batter

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As I indicated in my original review, this camera should not be called a Google "Nest" Camera battery. It cannot be accessed from the Google Nest app, only from the Google Home app, while our other Google Nest cameras and doorbells can only be partially accessed from the Google Home app. We now have to use the Google Home app to configure notifications for this camera and the Google Nest app for our other cameras. And this new camera cannot be accessed from the home.nest.com website used for existing Google Nest cameras. Most worrisome, however, is that Google Nest seeks to suppress this information. I have tried to post some of my concerns in the Google Nest Community forum, but Google is now deleting my posts. Google Nest Support tells me they do not know why, and say they are unable to find out why or to get my posts unbanned, and cannot escalate my concern to anyone, and cannot tell me who I can contact.

Hi MplsCustomer, thanks for your feedback. We´re sorry to hear about your disappointment with the Google Home app for your Nest Cam (Battery), and for any issue you are having with the reviews you are posting for our products.

We wanted to make the Google Home app the one place where you can control all your favorite Nest devices and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. Here are some benefits you can get by using the Google Home app with your Nest Cam (Battery):
      - Automatic security protections such as Suspicious activity detection, 2-Step Verification and Security Checkup.
      - Your Google Nest devices and services will work together. For example, if you have a Nest Cam and a Nest Hub, just say, "Hey Google, show me the backyard camera” to cast your camera stream to your display without any additional setup.
      - One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps.
      - Your homes and home members will be aligned across the Nest and Google Home apps.

If you´re willing to try, you may set up your Nest cameras to the Google Home app. Here´s a guide that you can follow to set up your Nest cameras on the Google Home app: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9893532

We may need to have a closer look at the issue you are having with your posts on our Community channel, and see how we can provide you a better experience. Please reach out to our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

2nd Generation Cams are not as good

I love my nest doorbell and first generation indoor and outdoor wired cameras. I purchased this camera to tie in with my existing set up since the first generation cams are no longer available. Here is what I’ve found: 1) cannot view the video in the original nest app; you must use Google home to view. I prefer the nest app but understand that I need to be flexible with ever changing technology so I’m not basing my review solely on that. 2) my main gripe is that when you change your wifi provider or anything to do with network set up then you have to actually factory reset your camera to get it to sync again which erases all your stored video. Not to mention the new cameras no longer have the scan code on the camera; you have to find the piece of paper with the code that came in the box packaging each time to set it up. I still cannot get my camera to work even after factory reset. So in summation, this is not as user friendly. I’m not a fan and will look at other companies when my current cameras need to be replaced.
