Must use with google home app because it doesn’t work with the nest app. Google home takes a long time to load video, the app often crashes, and it is harder to scroll through history. I have 7 of the older version that still work with the nest app.

Hi there, Calving. We appreciate your feedback. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Nest Cam (battery) and the Google Home app. The new Nest Cam (battery) is designed to work with the Google Home app because Google is transitioning its smart home devices to a unified platform. We understand you might be used to the Nest app, especially since you have other Nest Cams that work well with it. While the Google Home app offers broader functionality for your smart home ecosystem and we apologize if you're experiencing slow video loading or app crashes. Awesome design and build quality. I love how it mounts magnetically.. literally everything else is terrible. I have 2 older Nest indoor wired cameras that I love. This camera cannot be connected to the Nest app; only the Google Home app, which sucks more than my ex. If you want a battery powered camera, go with the Ring Stick-Up. Image quality is 1,000% better

Hi cms0428, thanks for sharing your feedback about the Nest Cam (Battery). We’re sorry to learn that using Google Home app is disagreeable for you.

New Nest cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience. But you can still view your existing Nest cameras alongside with the new Nest Cams in the Google Home app. Also, using the Google Home app provides you with a lot of benefits including access to Google's trusted security platform and access to other Google tools and with seamless integration with other Google devices.

As for the image quality, adjusting the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use might be helpful.. For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). Please check the steps below:
      - Open the Home app Google Home app.
      - Select your camera.
      - Tap Settings Video.
      - Under “Video quality,” tap High.

Let us know if you need help, and we'll be more than happy to assist you. You can contact our support team here anytime: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. We regret to hear that you’re unable to connect your Nest Cam (Battery) with your other Nest devices.

The Nest Cam (Battery) is exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience. Our long term plan is to use the Google Home app as the one place you can control all of your favorite Nest and other smart home devices, as well as Google Assistant. In the near future, we’ll allow users to set up previous Nest devices and have full control in the Home app. Users with older cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Cams. Our team is working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app so all of your cameras can be set up and controlled in one place.

Your feedback is important to us as it will greatly help us understand our customers’ needs. If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach out to our support team. We’d be more than happy to help here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Hi there, thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your nest Cam (Battery) dies too fast, and that you have to constantly charge them.

The battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. Users can extend the battery life of their camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Here are some typical scenarios for your Nest Cam (Battery):
Busy: About 1.5 months battery life (about 20 - 25 recorded events per day)
Typical: About 3 months battery life (about 9 - 12 recorded events per day)
Quiet: About 7 months battery life (about 2 - 4 recorded events per day)

You may want to check on the frequency of events (per day) that you get with your Nest Cam (Battery). If the short battery life isn´t related to the frequency of events, then we may need to have a closer look at your device and understand what may be causing it. You may contact our support team for further assistance by visiting us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

This is the crappiest camera ever, it won’t add onto nest and you have to charge it completely to be able to see live footage which is bs I give 1 star we’ll actually I give zero stars if I could. I definitely would not recommend. Plus showing live footage when it’s connecting was all blurry and ugly so no I don’t recommend at all. Get the other best camera or find a different brand cuz this is crap. I promise you that. Save your money.

Hi Jayy, we appreciate your feedback and thanks for letting us know that you’re dealing with such issues. We’re sorry to hear about your less than ideal experience with the functionality and quality of your Nest Cam (Battery).

Our team is working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app so all of your cameras can be set up and controlled in one place.

Straight out of the box, your Google Nest camera can stream live video for free in the Home app. The Google Home app will show you how much time you have left until your battery will need to be charged, and the app will also notify you once the camera needs to charge. If the camera isn’t streaming, tap Turn on. Or you can tap Turn off to manually stop streaming. If your camera is offline, you can tap Retry to reconnect. If you don’t want to worry about charging your camera, you can connect it to an indoor power outlet using the included USB cable.

For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). You can also adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use.

Hi JDGA, thanks for giving us time to share your feedback with us about the Nest Cam (battery). We hear you, and we're aware that longtime Nest users like you enjoy viewing the camera videos using the Nest app or web app. However, the new Nest cameras and doorbell are exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with your speakers and displays. A Nest Aware subscription applies to all of your cameras, speakers, and displays in the same home structure. And you can view both your old and new Nest Cams together in the Home app.

We request for your patience as we’re working on a seamless solution to provide a better user experience. Meanwhile, we suggest having the latest version of the Google Home app that may improve camera playback controls to make it easier to play, pause, and navigate between events from the camera history view. And if you come across any challenges with using the camera in the Home app effectively, let us know here and we’ll do our best to help: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Hi there Jdub, thanks for reaching out. We´re sorry to hear about your disappointment with missing notifications for Nest Cam (Battery).

Your Nest camera runs algorithms to process video and audio data so it can determine whether it detected something you might want to know about. If your Nest Cam (Battery) isn't able to recognize people and trigger notifications, you might have to move your camera, change your camera’s angle, or change something in the scene so that you don’t miss important activity. We also recommend getting the Nest Aware subscription and getting Intelligent alerts to give you better awareness of what’s happening around your home. The camera misses events and when it does capture an event its the last few seconds. Regardless of zones and sensitivity settings. I even call support and went through each setting. Still same trash camera. You must wire the camera and pay for the service so you can get 24/7. It will still miss events but at least you can go back. I should have returned it the first couple of days. Now im stuck with this junk.

Hi Allfacts, thanks for informing us about the issue with your Nest Cam (Battery). We apologize for any inconvenience you may be having with it, and for the shortfall in providing your support needs.

Here are some recommended troubleshooting steps you might want to try out, if you haven't tried them yet:
      - Check the battery charge. The app will send multiple notifications to let you know that your doorbell’s battery charge is running low and that you should charge it. But if you didn’t have a chance to charge it before the battery got too low, simply take it off the backplate and charge it with the included USB-C cable.
      - Check chime settings in the app. Your current settings may be preventing the chime from ringing. For example, someone who shares access to your Nest home may have turned the chime off, or changed the chime duration in the app.
      - Check Wi-Fi connection. Check that your doorbell isn’t listed as offline in the app. If it is, use the articles linked below to troubleshoot.
      - Very hot or cold weather. If it’s extremely hot or cold outside, or if your doorbell is installed in direct sunlight, the chime (and video or Wi-Fi) may turn off automatically to help protect its internal circuitry. The chime will automatically turn on again when your doorbell’s internal temperature returns to its normal operating range.

If you´re willing to try, we recommend contacting our support team again. The issue may need a deeper look from our support team. This will help us to understand what may be causing the issue and work on providing you a better experience. The camera has a good wide view but it don’t matter because it doesn’t record anything! Hi jadm, thanks for reaching out. We´re sorry to hear that the overall video quality for Nest Cam (Battery) didn't meet your expectations.

Your Nest Cam (Battery) has full HD resolution with HDR video quality that’s optimized for a clear view in bright sun or dark. Keep in mind that it also helps save battery power. We believe that video resolution is only one factor that impacts video quality, and it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing a camera. However, if the images on your video seem too pixelated or blurry, then we recommend checking on your network for possible congestion as your bandwidth may not be enough to seamlessly connect all your devices, including Nest Cam (Battery). To isolate this issue, we recommend removing all your connected devices and then checking if the video quality for your Nest Cam (Battery) will improve.

We´re hoping you will reconsider to keep using your Nest Cam (Battery). You can always contact our support team for your support needs, by reaching out to us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

    Huge step backward for Nest

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought 3 of these from a different retailer and have been using them for about six months now. I have been a long time Nest user (since the good old days prior to the Google buyout), and have literally every product they have come out with prior to these cameras, all of which have been fantastic. And then comes this little gem. Where to start? First, the positives. The picture quality and night vision are good, in line with the older cameras, although not as good as the Outdoor IQ. Motion sensing is good when you have the camera positioned correctly. Installation is super easy and the magnets are crazy strong. And that’s where the good stuff stops. The battery life is awful if they are in a busy area (3 days for my two busy cameras), so I ended up buying a power cord for one of them, which I would recommend if you must have these. The one in the less busy area gets over a month of battery life, but I also don’t have it adjusted quite right, so it’s missing a lot of motion. I did adjust some of my settings to try to improve battery life, but I wasn’t comfortable sacrificing much awareness of what was going on around my home. If you want 24/7 continuous video recording, you obviously need the power cable. I have definitely discovered that I would rather have always on over the hassle of recharging all the time. Charging takes quite awhile, too, about 4-5 hours, so if you don’t want any down time on your cameras, that’s a consideration. With these cameras, the alerts for dogs barking and people speaking has gone away, even when powered continuously. I use the dog bark alerts to know when my dogs are barking when I’m away and to quiet them by talking to them through the camera. Losing this feature is a big deal to me. And if you live somewhere that gets cold, be prepared for these cameras to not function when the temperature drops. I live in Montana, and these things quit working when it gets to around 15 degrees, even though the specs say they are rated to -4. I’ve even had them go offline due to “severe temperatures” when it’s been in the 20s. The one that is plugged in all the time does work in lower temps, and did manage to stay online to about 0 degrees a few times, but it’s not consistent. The older cameras have NEVER gone offline for weather, including the doorbell and regular Outdoor camera that are also rated to -4 degrees. And this includes temperatures well into the -20 to -30 range with wind chills into the -40s. Not super unexpected that something battery operated doesn’t work in cold temps…but I had expected it to at least work to the operating specs. Also, these cameras require you to use the Google Home app to view the cameras; you can’t see these cameras in the Nest app (the app that actually works!). The Home app is very buggy and constantly has issues staying connected to the cameras when you are trying to actually view footage or the app just randomly quits. No, it’s not a wifi issue because an older camera in one of the same places never dropped and I have great signal strength in all the camera locations. Older generation cameras can be viewed in the Home app, but frequently show as being offline in the Home app when they are perfectly fine in the Nest app. History for the older cameras is accessed differently in the Home app (and more awkwardly) than it is for the new cameras in the EXACT SAME APP. So you end up having to use two apps for cameras that are all under the Nest umbrella to be able to use all of the features, which is cumbersome and incredibly annoying. Another annoyance with the Home app is that you can’t just see all of your cameras right away when you open the app like you can with the Nest app; you have to open the app and then click on Cameras - just an extra step and something that takes longer when you are in a hurry to see something. Long story short, thanks to all of these factors, it takes longer to be able to actually see what’s going on, which is the whole point of having these cameras. These new cameras also no longer have the ability to look at your footage on the web app, which was a feature that made making clips so much easier. We also lost the ability to create timelapse videos since there is no access to the web app. The Google Home app is TERRIBLE and is a huge step backward over the Nest app. WHY would Google want to switch everything over to a new app that doesn’t even work when the Nest app has been awesome for years and years?? And then to not even make everything compatible? Google obviously has zero care for those of us who have heavily invested in Nest products over the years, which we did because the products and the software were superb, and if this is the direction they are taking Nest, they are going to find that people will move on to other products. I really wanted to like these cameras because of the convenience factor of not having to worry about where to plug in. As it is, I managed to find and purchase a couple of the older Nest Outdoor cameras and when they arrive, I will be swapping these new models out for something that actually works consistently and does what I want it to do. And hopefully I can recoup at least some of my costs by selling them online. By the looks of things, I’m not the only one doing this. Definitely do not recommend these cameras, especially if you are used to the features and functionality of the older models and Nest app.

Hi Megan, thanks for sharing the details of your experience with us. We´re sorry to hear that the battery life, motion detection and other features for Nest Cam (Battery) didn't meet your expectations.

Nest Cam (Battery) battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. Users can extend the battery life of their camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Here are some typical scenarios:
Busy: About 1 month battery life (About 25 - 30 recorded events per day)
Typical: About 2.5 months battery life (About 13 - 16 recorded events per day)
Quiet: About 6 months battery life (about 2 - 5 recorded events per day)

Motion detection can be affected by many factors, including changes in the light level, and shadows moving across the frame like when a cloud moves in front of the sun. This also includes other movements within the camera's field of view like trees or bushes swaying. If you're not getting any alerts or notifications, we recommend trying out the steps below:
      1. Change the Activity Zones on your camera. You can delete your existing Activity Zone and create a new one in any area within your camera's field of view. Just make sure that none of the zones you create overlap.
      2. Change the angle of your camera and account for the lighting in the surrounding area.
      3. Restart your Camera.

The new Nest Cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Google Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest speakers and displays. We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. If you already have some Nest cameras installed in your home, you may transfer them to the Google Home app. Check out this help article for more information: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9893532

Hi Grizzly, thanks for sharing a review to let us know of your issue with the Nest Cam (battery), and we’re sorry to hear that your experience with the battery has been less than ideal.

The battery life depends on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. You can extend the battery life by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Check this link for more details: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10901611

Also, you can avoid charging the battery more often by connecting your camera to a power outlet with the included or optional power adapter, which will keep the battery charged. Please note that the power adapter included with the Nest Cam (battery) is not weatherproof and not intended for outdoor use and you can use a compatible weatherproof cable (sold separately).

Face recognition feature in this camera is excellent. The design to place the camera is amazing.i have challenges to reset the camera to synch with another wifi router. Local storage (store the video on local memory card) is not available and clod storage/subscription is expensive to retrieve home videos

I would recommend this to a friend

Hi Chandra, we’re thankful for your feedback on Nest Cam (battery), and we hear your challenges and concerns with subscription and local storage.

Nest has long been focused on delivering quality products to our customers. We’re also focused on giving our customers value for the price, including three hours of event history right out of the box for the first time ever. On-device processing also gives our customers smart alerts and Activity Zones, which historically have required a subscription. There's no fee to stream full resolution live video and receive basic notifications, as long as your camera is connected to the internet. However, you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription to record video and receive advanced notifications. With a Nest Aware subscription your video will be saved to the cloud and you’ll get extra features. Find out more what you can get with the Nest Aware subscription here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159

Also, if you find yourself in need to reset the camera again, please refer to the following link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9252162
