    These are not Nest cameras

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do not purchase these cameras. They are sold and marketed as Nest products, but they are not. Google has used the Nest name to sell inferior products. I purchased two of these cameras during the pre-order period and I did not have the benefit of reading reviews. I was also not aware that there was only a 15 day return period and Google will not let me return them (I was late by a day). I purchased the cameras directly from Google and not from Best Buy. The cameras do not work with the Nest app. You have to use the Google Home app, which provides limited functionality compared to the Nest app. You also can't view these cameras on a computer - only through the app. The picture quality is not as good as the Nest cameras I have. The camera always seems to want to go into night mode even during the middle of the day. When you zoom in on the picture it becomes heavily pixelated due to the low resolution. The cameras are marketed as battery powered and wireless, but if you don't plug the cameras into an outlet you cannot have 24/7 recording like a true Nest camera does. I would not recommend these cameras to anyone that already has Nest cameras as you will not be happy with them.

Hi there, we really appreciate you for sharing your feedback about the Nest Cam (Battery). We’re sorry to learn of your issues and with its features, with its functionality in the Google Home app, and with the return period.

While the new Nest cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Google Home app, users with previous versions of Nest cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cams. We understand that long time Nest users enjoy viewing their Nest camera feeds from the Nest app and web app, however, our priority with this launch was to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest speakers and displays, and to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant.

Also, you can adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use. For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). Please check the steps below:
      - Open the Home app Google Home app.
      - Select your camera.
      - Tap Settings Video.
      - Under “Video quality,” tap High.

We’ll make sure to share your feedback along with the right team to work on improving our products and services. In the meantime, we’d like to learn more about how we can provide a better experience for you, and if you’re willing to get in touch with us, feel free to find us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

I had these cameras for over two days know and here what I can tell you: * Terrible Batter life - Only two days and my battery is down to 64%. This is not intended to be used with a battery. Must be plugged or google needs to release solar panels soon as they stated earlier. * With maximized sensitivity and every object (Human, Animal, Vehicle) recognition is enabled; Humans only gets recognized if you come to a halt. If you never stop walking then camera never recognizes you and never triggers an event. Not once recognized a vehicle. * Single charging cable. Do not buy double package because of this. Order single ones if you plan on doing so to get charging cables per camera. Surely google didnt do enough testing on these prior to releasing it. Its so sad that the only reason I bought them is because of the brand name behind them. Google is keep failing me on product quality and usability. These products are garbage.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear about the poor experience you have with the battery life, object recognition and charging cable that come with your Nest Cam (Battery).

To detect anything besides a person, animal, or moving vehicle, your Nest Cam (Battery) checks for general motion in the scene. It learns what’s normally in its background view and looks for movement and changes. As a result, it can sometimes trigger not just for important things, but also for minor things like tree branches swaying in the wind. If you don't have an active Nest Aware subscription, we recommend getting one. With Nest Aware, your camera uses advanced algorithms to pick out different kinds of activity. This makes the alerts you receive to your phone, tablet, or email even more helpful.

You may also set up Activity Zones so that your camera will only record in the zones that you’ve enabled. This allows you to ignore busy or unimportant areas of your scene. For more information, simply visit this page: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9207697

I must say setup has gave me hard time. Google home points me to Nest app and Nest sends me back to google home. After whole day of circling back and forth it started working. Video quality is 1080 I believe and it has sleep mode which saves the battery. I would rank this as middle level camera. Magnetic mount is impressive strong and very good job in there. I am using this inside of my garage because lots of time we forgot to close the garage door, and for that purpose itself is good enough.

Hi Erik77, thanks for posting a review. We're sorry to hear you had trouble with the app, but we're glad that you're able to figure it out and make it work.

We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place you can control all your favorite Nest and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. The new Nest Camera (Battery) is exclusive to the Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with other Google Nest speakers and displays. Also, using the Google Home app and a Google account provides a lot of benefits, including access to our trusted security features, and seamless integration with our other Google Nest devices, and Google Assistant.

Also, Nest Cam (Battery) has full HD resolution with HDR video quality that’s optimized for a clear view in bright sun or dark. You can adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use. For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). Please check the steps below on how to adjust video quality:
      - Open the Home app Google Home app.

I tried the nest camera outdoor but returned it after having too much slack from the 25ft cable. After watching image comparison this one seems to deliver the same resolution without the hassle of running that cable. My buddy has it and loves the mobility of it. I ordered mines waiting for it to come in but so far I’m sure I’ll be satisfied with it.I do Wish they offered skins or color options like the new doorbell

Battery life measured in hours not months

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased a two pack of the Nest outdoor cameras. Charged the 1st to 100% and mounted in a low traffic area. I adjusted the settings to maximize battery life. I did this on a mildly warm day. In the span of 6 hours the battery was down to 50%. This with around 6-7 alerts. I watched it drop rapidly (10% or so) when the camera was on ‘idle’ and not recording any events. I have a Nest Protect. Since I do, the setup process forces you to use the Nest Protect to set up the camera. This is a hit or miss proposition. I had to try a few times on the first camera until I was successful. For the second camera I could not get it to sync with my Nest Protect. There is no direct way to set up the camera if you own a Nest Protect—one that was obvious anyway. I wish I had the many hours I sunk into this product back. The box with the two cams will be returned to the store tomorrow. Don’t make my mistake—skip these. There are other options (which I will be checking out).

Hi there Snakmagic, thanks for choosing Google Nest products. We´re sorry to hear about the battery and set up issue you are experiencing with Nest Cam (Battery). It is unfortunate that you are planning to return them.

Battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. Users can extend the battery life of their camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Here are some typical scenarios for your Nest Cam (Battery):
Busy: About 1.5 months battery life (about 20 - 25 recorded events per day)
Typical: About 3 months battery life (about 9 - 12 recorded events per day)
Quiet: About 7 months battery life (about 2 - 4 recorded events per day)

We recommend checking the frequency of events (per day) that you get with your Nest Cam (Battery). If the short battery life isn´t related to the frequency of events, then we may need to have a closer look at your device and understand what may be causing it. We may also need to take a closer look at your Nest Cam (Battery) and take a closer look at the set up issue you are experiencing. You may contact our support team for further assistance by visiting us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

If you buy this, you're DUMB, here's why.

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Google shows their hand, they're not interested in continuing the Nest Labs legacy any further as these cameras mark a pivot to collecting not only your data but only that which they want. Previously you could at least justify a subscription to stream uninterrupted CCTV feeds from your cameras NO MORE. You only get what Google algorithms determine to be of interest. I've not had a single activity detected and yet my last generation Nest cams picked them all up. NIGHT VISION SUCKS and is totally pointless and clearly not a software fix down the road as Google has now release a ridiculous dual flood light cam. Why? Not to scare off criminals or squirrels, no it's to allow their crappy camera aperture to take over from the night vision which they skimped on to make room for onboard processing. WHY? Because they don't want to process your data they are taking, take takes money and cycles so why not make you do it, claim battery powered, but hide the fact it's not a CCTV it's a motion triggered only and then google decided motion.

Hi BradScalio, thanks for sharing your experience with us Nest Cam (Battery). It's unfortunate to hear about your concerns with how we collect your data, and the changes we made with the features for our Google Nest products.

We value both your data and privacy, and that we've taken great measures to make sure both are well guarded. You can learn more about how we manage your privacy by visiting this FAQ page:  https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9415830

Your Nest Cam (battery) can accommodate up to 10 days of continuous video recording (CVR) and 24/7 video history if hardwired to power, and subscribed to Nest Aware Plus ($12 a month for all your cameras, speakers, and displays on the same home structure).

Motion detection for your Nest Cam (Battery) can be affected by changes in the light level, and shadows moving across the frame like when a cloud moves in front of the sun. This also includes other movements within the camera's field of view like trees or bushes swaying. If you're not getting any alerts or notifications, we recommend trying out the steps below:
      1. Change the Activity Zones on your camera. You can delete your existing Activity Zone and create a new one in any area within your camera's field of view. Just make sure that none of the zones you create overlap.
      2. Change the angle of your camera and account for the lighting in the surrounding area.
      3. Restart your Camera.

Night Vision video quality can be affected by internet speed and other issues, but most Night Vision specific issues are caused by the camera’s infrared light that reflects off a surface near the camera, like a shelf, window, window screen, or wall. Here are some recommended steps that may be helpful with the issue:
      - Clean the lens with a soft cloth that’s made for cleaning optics. Dust, thumbprints, and dirt can cause poor image quality.
      - Turn your camera so that any nearby surfaces or objects (like a wall) are out of view.
      - Use the Google Home app to Zoom and Enhance and crop out surfaces or objects that may be the cause of the glare.
      - If a bright white shape along the edge appears while everything else is too dark, there might be a surface that’s too close in your camera’s view (like a wall). Angle your camera so the surface stays out of view.
      - Move nearby objects that may reflect the infrared light.

Should not be called a Google "Nest" Camera Batter

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As I indicated in my original review, this camera should not be called a Google "Nest" Camera battery. It cannot be accessed from the Google Nest app, only from the Google Home app, while our other Google Nest cameras and doorbells can only be partially accessed from the Google Home app. We now have to use the Google Home app to configure notifications for this camera and the Google Nest app for our other cameras. And this new camera cannot be accessed from the home.nest.com website used for existing Google Nest cameras. Most worrisome, however, is that Google Nest seeks to suppress this information. I have tried to post some of my concerns in the Google Nest Community forum, but Google is now deleting my posts. Google Nest Support tells me they do not know why, and say they are unable to find out why or to get my posts unbanned, and cannot escalate my concern to anyone, and cannot tell me who I can contact.

      - Automatic security protections such as Suspicious activity detection, 2-Step Verification and Security Checkup.
      - Your Google Nest devices and services will work together. For example, if you have a Nest Cam and a Nest Hub, just say, "Hey Google, show me the backyard camera” to cast your camera stream to your display without any additional setup.
      - One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps.

2nd Generation Cams are not as good

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I love my nest doorbell and first generation indoor and outdoor wired cameras. I purchased this camera to tie in with my existing set up since the first generation cams are no longer available. Here is what I’ve found: 1) cannot view the video in the original nest app; you must use Google home to view. I prefer the nest app but understand that I need to be flexible with ever changing technology so I’m not basing my review solely on that. 2) my main gripe is that when you change your wifi provider or anything to do with network set up then you have to actually factory reset your camera to get it to sync again which erases all your stored video. Not to mention the new cameras no longer have the scan code on the camera; you have to find the piece of paper with the code that came in the box packaging each time to set it up. I still cannot get my camera to work even after factory reset. So in summation, this is not as user friendly. I’m not a fan and will look at other companies when my current cameras need to be replaced.

If you have used nests old cameras you will be extremely disappointed with these. No matter what you do these cameras don’t continuously record. They only record “events”. Countless times i’ve tried to go back and review camera footage only to find out the app didn’t record it at all and I can’t just rewind and watch everything. There are a lot of situations where you may want to see whats going on around your property at certain times even if no event triggered the camera. I also had to pay extra money for the POWER CABLE. Seriously ridiculous money grab by google. And the app is trash. The nest app was perfect, i got the notifications to my apple watch. I get a blank white screen with these cameras and the google app now when I try to preview an event. Useless garbage that I am now stuck with. I’ll NEVER buy another google product. Hi RT1611, we value your feedback about the Nest Cam (Battery), and we’re sorry to learn it’s a disappointment for you.

The Nest Cam (Battery) is the first battery-powered camera created by Google. Unlike the previous versions of Nest cameras with still images up to 3 hours, the new Nest Cam (Battery) comes with free 3 hour event-based video history. There's no fee to stream full resolution live video and receive basic notifications, as long as your camera is connected to the internet. However, you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription to record video and receive advanced notifications. With a Nest Aware subscription your video will be saved to the cloud and you’ll get extra features.

Nest Aware is a paid subscription service you can use with your Nest products to help keep you informed about important events at your home. With a Nest Aware subscription, you’ll get 30 days of event video history. With Nest Aware Plus, you’ll get 60 days and 10 days of 24/7 video history if you choose to connect your Nest Cam (battery) to a power cable. Check what you can get with the Nest Aware subscription, here’s the link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159

    Can't Save Non-Detected Events

This product uses the Google Home App. With the Google Home App you cannot download video clips from footage with no activity. I have events, small animals, that the Next Camera (Battery) did not detect that I want to save, but I cannot save them by Google Home App's design. This product is useless until Google adds the ablity to detect all possible events or allows the saving of non-detected activity. From the support page "Note: You can only download video clips from detected events in the video history. You cannot download video clips from footage with no activity." https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9207572#zippy=%2Cdownload-a-video-clip Note that video clips of non-detected events could be saved using the older Nest Cameras that use the Nest App. This Nest Camera (Battery) cannot be used by the Nest App.

Hi Norman42, we appreciate you for sharing the details of your experience with using the Nest Cam (Battery) and the Home app. We’re sorry to hear that it didn’t detect the events you want to save

Your camera runs algorithms to process video and audio data so it can determine whether it detected something you might want to know about. If you only need your camera to detect people, animals, or moving vehicles, we recommend that you do not turn on the basic motion and sound detection feature. You might have to move your camera, change your camera’s angle, or change something in the scene so that you don’t miss important activity and choose which events your camera can detect and record.

You’ll have the ability to download multiple video clips that event video history automatically captures. If you have event video history, your Nest camera will automatically generate a video clip of the activity that you can download. If you have 24/7 video history and want to create a video clip of a specific event you will need to download one of the automatically generated video clips and edit using your phone’s native video editor.

We hope we can learn more about your experience why your camera didn’t detect events. If you’re willing, you may visit us anytime at the following link and we’d be happy to help: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Extremely disappointed in the new Neat Cameras. I one multiple rental properties and we used the wires Nest cams (older generation ones) until google apparently bought Nest out. We purchased these new cameras and were honestly surprised how much worse they are. First off, quality compared to the old cameras are worse (how does this happen with new tech?). Secondly, the cameras are not continuous in recording and we had an incident where a person broke into our vehicle and there was missing footage for half of the time as if the camera never picked up any “activity.” Also, the google home app is complete garbage compared to the Nest app and we aren’t allowed to connect the new cams to the Nest app. Utterly disappointed- stay away from these.

Hi there, Ismalife. Thanks for your feedback on Nest Cam (battery), and for being an avid user of Google devices. We're sorry to hear that your experience with the camera's battery life is below your expectations.

Battery life depends on factors like recording settings and activity level, but two days definitely falls short of expectations. You can try adjusting settings like recording frequency, video quality, and event duration to conserve battery. We also recommend checking that the camera is securely plugged into a working outlet. If the battery issue persists and you have easy access to an outlet, plugging the camera into a power outlet with the included power adapter might be a better fit, which is also required to get 24/7 recording. Please note that the power adapter included with the Nest Cam (battery) is not weatherproof and not intended for outdoor use, and we suggest using a compatible weatherproof cable (sold separately). You can contact your retailer for product availability.

Tested with wirless and wired connectiongs, but the events recording is an issue. When people walk, or cars drive by it does not always capture the whole recording. For example, person walking on sidewalk stops recording halfway through screen. With that said, I don't have confidence it will record everything I need in the event I need it.

Hi riki, thanks for sharing the details of your feedback on Nest Cam (Battery). We’re sorry to learn that it doesn’t always capture the whole recording. We understand how important it is for your camera to record everything you need in the event you need it.

If you haven’t yet, you can adjust the length of time for which events are recorded. The maximum event length defines how long your camera or doorbell will record each individual event. Here’s how to adjust the maximum event length:
      - Open the Home app.
      - On the home screen, select your camera.
      - Tap Settings > Video.
      - Tap Maximum event length and choose a longer event length.

Also, you might want to consider a Nest Aware Plus subscription if you need up to 10 days of continuous 24/7 video history, up to 60 days of event video history clips or you need to record any of the following:
      - Everything that happens, even if nothing moves or makes a sound.
      - Small animals like cats, squirrels and birds.
      - People and objects when they don’t move much, like people sitting and eating.
      - Areas with poor or changing lighting, like many outdoor areas.
Please note that Continuous 24/7 video history is only available for wired Google Nest cameras and Nest Doorbell (wired). Not available for Nest Doorbell (battery), even with optional wired installation.

We’re always here to help improve your experience. You’re more than welcome to contact us anytime if you need further assistance: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Hello there, Soundbar. We’re sorry to hear about your issue with using the Nest Cam (battery). We understand that having to charge the camera more often than you should can be an inconvenience, and this is not the kind of experience we want to share with you. Adjusting the camera settings such as video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas can extend its battery life.
