A truly wireless indoor/outdoor HD security camera

The new Google Nest security camera is a truly wireless Wifi camera with excellent HD picture quality in day or night. I’ve had the original wired version installed as a front door cam for years and am pretty excited to add a 2nd camera to the ecosystem. It has a few upgrades over the older version, such as a rechargeable long-life battery, better broadcast sound, and some pretty fancy features like people, animal, vehicle, motion, and even familiar face detection. You can adjust how sensitive the motion sensing is, and of course you can create zones for it to focus on or ignore. I use mine as an auxiliary camera that I move around the house depending on the need. It comes with a magnetic wall mount that’s very sturdy and holds the camera solid. I set that up high over the garage to look over the driveway, but I love that I can just pull the camera off the magnetic base and move it to another base mounted in the backyard. There’s even a stand option so you can put the camera on a table top or shelf. Indoors, the battery life is spectacular. It only captures footage of events, so the camera saves energy on not recording everything and can supposedly go almost a whole year on a single charge. I doubt that, but it really depends on how frequently the camera detects an event and turns on. I’m sure cold weather plays a part too (batteries in general hate cold), but it’s been about a week and I’m still at 93% battery life, which is outstanding. If I have to recharge it every month or 2, fine… it’s really not that hard or inconvenient. Plus, there’s an optional 30’ power cable available that enables you to plug it in and never have to worry about charging it again. The only thing I don’t like is that it doesn’t work with the Nest app, which I prefer for camera viewing over the Google Home app. It’s a small detail, but I guess I’m more worried if that means they’re going to stop supporting the Nest app. On the bright side, it integrates well with Google Home, which is handy because I have a bunch of peripherals that already use it. One other major upgrade over the original is that it comes with 3 hours of free event activity videos. Meaning… it’ll let you access footage within the past 3 hours for free, no subscription needed. Which is awesome, because the original came with none. Get the subscription though, and the whole Nest ecosystem is fantastic, with up to 10 days of 24/7 video history on the plus plan. Overall, I love the portability of this camera. The wifi range is strong enough to mount it just about anywhere in a single house, and the battery life should be able to go months at a time without a recharge. The speaker is a nice improvement over the original as well, with much louder sound and less static. If you’re looking for a truly portable wireless security camera, you should definitely check out the new Google Nest Security Camera

Simple installation, The hardware did not include the necessary screws to fit the wall anchors, so I had to find my own. No software issues, fast updates, and the audio/video quality are awesome. I love the microphone/speaker combo that can act like an Intercom. The blessing and curse of this product is the fact that it runs on a battery. While the battery life is tremendously good, When in battery mode, I cant record all night, just for certain movement events. Knowing that I would have to buy a separate cable or the stand for continuous power. Other than that I really love how easy it was to set up.

    Excellent Camera with Google Smarts

In a marketer saturated with all kinds of smart security cameras, companies really have to try hard to stand out and google did it with the exception of a few small issues with this camera. Build: the camera feels really well built. It’s completely enclosed with only a magnetic port for the charger. The magnets for the wall mount and stand (sold separately) are very strong and work well to hold the camera in any position needed. My only issue with the build is the power cord. When connected it feels like you’ve put the cord in wrong. The angle directs the power cord to the front of the camera. This is especially noticeable if you use this camera for continuous recording since it has to be plugged in to use that feature. It looks really awkward and a clear design error. The camera itself is much bigger than I expected, it’ll definitely be noticeable wherever you put it. But overall it feels like a pretty solid camera that will last being stuck to a wall or on a cabinet shelf. One last problem I see with the camera design is because it’s a round shape there is no way to set this camera on a shelf without getting a stand, otherwise it’ll just roll around. I’ve seen other cameras do a much better job in design to provide a flat spot for setting the camera somewhere. Setting up is fairly easy, the google home app walks you through all the steps to mount the camera to a wall with a few screws and walk through the setup. Really nothing to this step. Using the camera is fairly easy too. If you’ve used the google home app you’ll be at home. The picture is very clear in both day and night. I had no problem seeing what was going on and the audio was some of the best I’ve heard on a smart camera. The smarts are really impressive on this device. Nest will detect unfamiliar faces based on how you train it and alert you when someone unfamiliar is noticed. It also has the ability to listen for smoke alarms which gives better peace of mind. There’s also an option for 30 day storage and continuous recording if you pay extra. This is my biggest issue with the camera, without paying the extra fee, you only get 3 hours of recording playback. This is almost unusable for the purpose of a security camera. So if you don’t want to pay the monthly fee I would pass on this camera. Overall this is a really feature packed camera, but you have to join nest aware to really get use from the camera. If you don’t mind that then you’ll be happy with this camera. If not you might want to look somewhere else.

Hi there, we're sorry for the disappointing experience with Nest Cam (Battery). We appreciate that you tried troubleshooting the issue by resetting your device. However, the live video feed issue may be related to possible congestion of your network. Removing some of your connected devices may help free up some bandwidth space, and enable you to watch the live video feed with any issues. Nest cameras typically require between 0.8 Mbps to 4.0 Mbps per device to upload properly, depending on the video quality setting you selected. Once you confirm that you are able to view the live video feed without any hiccups, we recommend contacting your Internet service provider to check your connection and upgrade it if needed. We also recommend checking for possible signal interference, such as the thick walls and other devices in your home, which may weaken Wi-Fi signals. Placing your router within a line of sight from your Nest Cam (Battery), and within 10-15 feet from each other, will ensure a reliable Wi-Fi signal. However, if the issue is still persistent, even after following the steps we suggested, then we may need to have a closer look at your Nest Cam (Battery) and figure out what may be causing the issue. You're more than welcome to reach out to our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

A quality camera that has a lot going for it

The camera itself a little larger than most wifi cameras but it has a lot of tech in it along with a battery so I get it. It can be used indoor or outdoor. The mount it comes with is great! You can either screw it into something or use its magnetic capabilities and the magnet is rather strong. Strong enough were I wont be worried about it blowing off in a storm. The camera turns off once its removed from the magnetic mount so you can move it around or charge it without triggering recording. I may be part of the minority here when I say this but I've never used nest products prior so I'm not invested in the original nest app as some are with their older nest products. I like that google put their new nest products into the google home app. I already have it installed so integration into my existing home was very smooth. No need to install other app on my phone just to use the camera. In my opinion I see this as a pro. As for video I find the quality is ok. Its its 1080 HD and I find it looks better than most HD wifi cameras of same resolution but obviously not as good as the 2k cameras. Night vision works pretty well too. Just like the new nest battery doorbell its got AI integration and push notifications. Depending on where you mount this you may want it enabled or disabled. I like that it only records when it needs to. Also built in is two way audio so you can have conversations with people near by the camera. I have mine on 5Ghz wifi and I found the delay for video and audio is about 1 sec which isn't bad in the wifi camera world. Google sells official accessories for it too like a indoor stand and a outdoor 33 foot weatherproof cable which you may want to invest in if you don't want to have to recharge the battery for outdoor use. My only con is the three hours of video history. If it detects something overnight and records it, the video is gone by the time I wake up. Would be nice to get 12 hours free before having to pay for the nest subscription or allow a SD card. Overall I think this camera is very underrated. It a quality camera that has a lot going for it. If your looking for a wifi camera that integrates with googles ecosystem and has a lot of the latest camera features then I think this is a great option.

Over a handful of years, I've installed different types of Security Cameras. Wired systems from Lorex and Q See. Wireless systems from Arlo Pro, Wyze, Eufy, D-Link and now Google Nest. Unfortunately, the Google Nest Camera Battery runs in the middle of the pack. I'm a little disappointed there isn't a breakthrough 'gotta have' feature. Out of the box, the camera itself is just smaller than a softball. It's got some heft to it, so the battery should last a while. As I'm looking through the Google Home app, I can see that the camera has 98% charge after running it for 5 days. One nice feature in the Google Home app, it estimates the battery life, in my case it shows 12 months. This will vary greatly based on traffic. The base magnetically secures to the camera and can be magnetically mounted. Fortunately, my door and sidelites are steel, so it made mounting easy as can be. Also included in the box is a twist-lock mounting plate and screws in case your mounting situation needs it. The charging cable is proprietary. It's a magnetic contact charger. The included cable is 1 meter in length and connects to the AC adapter via USB, therefore it is not weatherproof. I looked around for the weatherproof version and the 5 meter and 10 meter versions are $35 and $40 respectively. Another nit-pick I have with this charging cable is that it attaches to the camera one way and it's toward the front of the camera and not towards the base of the camera. In my opinion, it highlights the cord instead of hiding the cord. Setup of the camera is done through the Google Home app and not through the Nest app. This is rather unfortunate and confusing as this is advertised as a Nest camera. I believe I made the mistake of plugging in the camera to charge and not immediately setting up the camera since I had to tend to more immediate matters. When I came back to set it up, I had difficulty with the setup and required resetting the camera. I found instructions on resetting the camera, but the instructions were slightly misleading. There is a subtle button on the back of the camera and it requires a surprising amount of pressure to activate. I waited for the confirmation tone to release the button, but instead I had to wait for the yellow light to turn off to release the button before the confirmation tone would occur. This is tricky since the light is on the front of the camera and the button is difficult to push on the back. Once I had it reset, it took another couple tries to get it into the Google Home app. What's nice about this camera is that it's WiFi based, so you can place it anywhere your WiFi reaches. This is opposed to Arlo Pro or Eufy where it's dependent on the location of the base station. So this Google Nest Camera Battery gives you a little more placement flexibility if you have a strong WiFi coverage for your home. The video is clear but is limited to 1080 or lower. Some competing systems can give you 4K. Recorded audio is clear and the 2-way audio is better than I expected. Most other systems event recording is set for a particular amount of time. The Google Nest Camera records for the duration of the event or up to 3 minutes. But the tradeoff is that the recording is only available for 3 hours unless you purchase the subscription package. There are two levels of subscriptions at $6 or $12 per month with a small discount for annual plans. These plans are set up for unlimited devices. For my situation, I'm better off with another brand of cameras. The Google Nest Camera Battery doesn't have any features that make it head and shoulders above any other camera system. The premium pricing of just one of these cameras coupled with the proprietary charging cable could get me into a 2 or more camera system from other brands.

Hi bzm3j81, we appreciate you sharing your experience with the Nest Cam (Battery). We’re sorry to learn that your Nest camera didn’t meet your expectations.

Our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. Our teams are working on enabling the ability to setup and control older Nest cameras in the Home app so users will have one app to control all of their devices, and we’re working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app because we wanted to create an integrated experience with other Nest and smart home devices.

You can extend the battery life of your camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. This link might be helpful: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10901611

As for the image quality, you can adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use. Pixel count is only one factor that impacts video quality, and it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing a camera. The new Nest Cam has HDR video quality that’s optimized for a clear view in bright sun or dark.

We always listen to our customer’s feedback as it helps us better understand our customers’ needs and preferences. If you have any questions or if you need any assistance, please let us know and we’d be happy to help: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest
