Frustrating Setup Process

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Like everything Nest these days, these cameras have a frustrating setup process that causes confusion - which App do I need, the Nest app or the Google Home App? Why does it say it needs an "assisting device"? How can I access the video feeds? Google has royally screwed up their acquisition of Nest, and these cameras (and all other Nest products) should be avoided until they figure out what the heck they're trying to do.

The Nest Cam (indoor, wired) is exclusive to the Google Home app. To set up, the app takes you through the steps. You need the Home app to connect your camera to Wi-Fi and get recorded video, so you should always use the app to guide you through setup and installation. Once connected to Wi-Fi and paired to your Google Home app, you can use the app to stream the live view without significant delay, look back on what happened (free 3 hour event-based video history), get activity alerts sent to your phone when something happens, save video clips, and more. Stopped working just after 2 months

I bought a Nest Protect from Best Buy, a Nest Outdoor Cam from Amazon, and this Nest Wired Cam from Best Buy. I bought this 10/12 and it stopped working today, 12/31. I've reset it, gone through all the tech troubleshooting and it still won't work. I'm going to try to bring this to my local store to see if they'll exchange it for a working one... fingers crossed because it says my return window closed at the end of 10/2023.

Google has ruined Nest

Replaced my original DropCam with this new Nest Cam because after 8 years it finally gave out. 1st off, I couldn't add it with the Nest app and had to download and install it with the Google Home app (WORST THING EVER! DO BETTER GOOGLE!). Once it was installed, I could see it and my other 2 cameras through the Home app but could only see my 2 existing cameras on my Nest app. Camera seemed to be fine... for about 6 hours. Then the video crapped out and started showing dark horizontal lines that seemed to "walk" up the screen. I tried to record the transition so I could send to Google and guess what! You can't record clips on the Home app unless it detects an "event"... again, TRASH! I've spent thousands of dollars on Nest products just so Google could come along and ruin it all. Looking into other solutions and this Google Nest branded stuff is going right into the garbage where it belongs!

Bad quality video compared to previous Nest cam ve

Quality of the video is worse. And this cam is not supported by the Nest app. It must be connected to Google Home. Now I’ve got cams on both apps. Annoying!

We understand that longtime Nest users enjoy viewing their camera feeds from the Nest app. However, our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. We’re working on bringing full functionality to the Home app as we want to create an integrated experience with other Nest and smart home devices. And while the new Nest cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Google Home app, users with previous versions of Nest cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cams.
You can adjust your camera's video quality that may improve the resolution. The higher the video quality setting you choose, the sharper and more detailed your footage can be, but it also uses more of your internet bandwidth. This setting lets you choose the maximum video quality for your camera. But whichever level you pick, your camera will automatically adjust its resolution and compression according to how much bandwidth is available. Do not buy.

I bought this as an additional camera. Now if you have an Apple product you have to download bluestacks and then Google Home. They do this so they can track everything you do, see or hear. Do not buy this piece of junk.

ONLY WORKS WITH GOOGLE HOME APP NOT NEST APP

Horrible ‘upgrade’ from Nest IQ

We have the Nest IQ cameras. They are 8 megapixel. This ‘new’ one is 2! The night vision is non existent. The quality of this camera is AWFUL. I don’t know why they would downgrade so much. Also, the new one is not compatible with the best app. You will have to set it up through Google Home to view the camera, but if you have older cameras, those will stay in the nest App. I really hope someone in product development at Nest realizes they made a horrible product and revert back to what they offered before.

We chose to transition to the Home app because this app is designed for the future of the smart home, a single place to set up, manage, automate, and control your home. Most home devices are controlled across multiple apps, but we’re working on making the Google Home app the central controller across all your home devices, including Google devices and devices from other brands.
Here are some other benefits you can get by using the Google Home app with your Nest Cam:
- Automatic security protections such as Suspicious activity detection, 2-Step Verification and Security Checkup.
- Your Google Nest devices and services will work together. For example, if you have a Nest Cam and a Nest Hub, just say, ""Hey Google, show me the backyard camera” to cast your camera stream to your display without any additional setup.
- One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps.
- Your homes and home members will be aligned across the Nest and Google Home apps.
Google Nest cameras’ night vision uses high-power infrared (IR) LEDs to illuminate the scene when it's dark. When night vision is set to Auto, Nest cameras wait to switch between normal and night modes only when the light gradually changes. For instance, at dusk or dawn, when the lighting is marginal. If there are any light sources in the area, your camera may be able to see even farther.
You can adjust your cameras’ video quality that may improve the resolution. A range issue or wireless interference can affect the performance of your doorbell. Sometimes it may pass the connection test during setup, but will struggle to stay connected if it’s just a bit too far away. If you're experiencing a spotty connection or weak signal, we recommend checking your Wi-Fi network to see if your bandwidth is congested. Which may happen if you have too many devices connected on the same bandwidth or if your network package is not enough to handle the data traffic on the network. If your doorbell is mounted too far from your Wi-Fi router, you may need to extend your Wi-Fi network’s range using an extender, boosters or additional Wi-Fi access points.
Here are some steps that may also help:
- Plug your Nest camera into a different power outlet to rule out power issues.
- Turn off other devices connected to your WiFi to see if this is about network traffic.
- You can also try restarting your router to reset your internet connection. You should also restart any Wi-Fi range extenders or repeaters that you have.

White screen on video

If the camera was turned off and then back on, the video would work for maybe a few days and then the video would be white again.

Not great as previous Nest Cams

I have previous Nest cams and the software was awesome, I'm not sure why google didn't expand on that software and made it better. They created their own which is terrible. This new cams use google and it doesn't even give you an option to look at your cameras through your laptop or desktop.
