spent hours on the phone with customer support - this doorbell never rang on interior doorbell or on my phone. All of the software settings were correct and the installation was correct. I had no idea when someone was at the door - completely useless. customer support was not help and gave up on fixing the issue. Now BB won't let me return. Don't waste your time or money.

Hi Timm, thanks for sharing your feedback on Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). We appreciate that you find the camera and night vision great, but are sorry to learn of your poor experience with the audio.

You can adjust your Nest camera and doorbell audio settings to turn the microphone off or on, change the microphone sensitivity, and set up audio notifications. When the microphone is off, audio is not streamed or recorded. It's off by default during setup. Here’s what to expect when you turn audio recording off for your camera:
      - Audio isn't saved with your camera’s recorded video, which means that any footage saved in your video history while audio recording was turned off don't have sound.
      - You can still get audio in your camera’s live video stream.
      - The app doesn't send you any sound alerts.
      - Follow the app instructions for your camera or doorbell below to turn audio recording on or off.

Hello there, EusaV. Thanks for posting a review about the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). We understand that having a wider camera view can be ideal for you. However, unlike some other video doorbells, Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) has a 145° diagonal field of view at 3:4 aspect ratio. It is intended so you can see people from head to toe, and packages left on the ground.

While the newer model offers improved features like increased resolution, better night vision, and a sleeker design, we acknowledge the trade-off in field of view. We're constantly evaluating user feedback and exploring ways to optimize future models to balance desired features with a wider field of view. In the meantime, you may be able to adjust the viewing angle slightly within the Home app settings for better coverage depending on your porch layout. Or if possible, consider mounting the doorbell slightly higher or at a slight angle to capture a wider area.

If you have other concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

    Google is ruining Nest

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

After Google bought Nest, they improved the specs on the camera doorbell yet largely ruined the product. With my old Nest doorbell, I could purchase an inexpensive subscription to see two months worth of captured video 24x7. This product does not work with the legacy Nest app, which is far more user friendly than Google Home. Furthermore, it doesn't benefit from that existing subscription and provide no obvious way to purchase a new one. All I can see is events and only those that happened within the last 3 hours; returning home from work, most of the day is already erased. So while it is a technically better product, in terms of being truly useful, it is actually far worse. Minor additional gripe - the addition of the google logo on the front of the doorbell is also tacky. Who wants a corporate logo on their doorbell?

Promising but falls short with performance/support

I was excited to upgrade my old traditional doorbell with this one when purchasing my home a year ago. It looked sleek, installed well, and the alerts were pretty accurate. I had no complaints for the first few months until winter came. Suddenly, the device was plagued with battery/power issues (despite being hard-wired). In below-freezing temps, the device would often go hours at a time without being able to record footage. I reached out to Google support, who told me this is inherent in the design of the doorbell; ultimately, it is a battery-powered device that periodically charges itself by pulsing the chime wiring. At certain cold temperatures, the battery simply cannot hold a charge/charge quickly enough, thus the hard wiring claim is misleading. I was surprised to hear Google Support admit this so freely. I chose the hardwired model specifically because I need constant recording given the area I live in. Google Support's parting advice was to temper my expectations in cold weather (which is a third of the year where I live)--and that they were very sorry to hear of my difficulty, of course! Then, recently the doorbell was ripped off and stolen from its mount. I learned Google offers replacements for stolen devices and was thankful to hear this. I did everything requested of me: filed and received copy of police report for the incident, kept the device registered to my Google account, saved final footage, etc. After half an hour of submitting my case to Google Support, I received a message informing me that I would NOT be receiving a replacement doorbell, given that the submitted police report mentioned the doorbell being damaged rather than stolen, which technically is considered customer-inflicted damage and not theft by Google. Wait, what?! Why wasn't this advertised in the procedures for requesting a replacement? I had problems with another Google camera device and received similarly unhelpful/disappointing support. Google Support's mantra might best be described as "Our default is to shift blame as much as possible, but we're very sorry to hear about your problem!" If Google won't stand by this expensive product that is subject to so many types of damage, I'm not going to waste my energy and money replacing it, only to be disappointed by it again. If cold temperatures and theft are concerns, I'd recommend considering a hardwired camera near the doorway instead.

    A quality upgrade

I first started out with an Arlo wireless doorbell, and after having it die constantly I switched to the gen 1 Nest Hello. I've had that for a few years, so I decided to upgrade to this doorbell, and I have to say I was impressed. The camera quality is good, the fact that it can see a package coming from the end of my driveway is a feature I absolutely love, especially since FedEx has a habit of literally throwing packages over my fence. The familiar faces feature is great as well. I'm glad I decided to upgrade my existing doorbell to this one.

Coming from the nest hello wired 1st gen I was a little skeptical about the resolution and camera view being less than the 1st gen. I can tell you the resolution with hdr on the nest hello 2nd gen still looks amazing. The view angle could be a little wider but all that was required was to mount a little further over. Whats amazing about this camera is the ability to get the name of the person walking up before the door bell is even pressed. The 1st gen would announce the names a couple seconds after the doorbell was pressed or not at all. This 2nd gen will notify with name the first step into frame and the announcement on the google homes and phones are instant. I also enjoy the option to be notified if animals cross the activity zone and the A.I is very quick on this camera when it comes to lights and specific faces.LOVE IT! Highly recommend.

    Inferior software to previous generation

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

For owners of a 1st gen doorbell looking to upgrade, this is a warning so that you don't have unpleasant surprises. The software/cloud features of this doorbell are inferior to the 1st gen version. In short: • There is no more video library. If you want to save clips, you must download them and store them somewhere. You no longer have quick, date-sorted access to all your important clips, stored in the cloud. You must manage all that yourself. • You can NOT create arbitrary clips from your video. You can only save pre-created clips that the camera selects based on what it sees in the camera. If it didn't pick something up but you want to save a clip of it, too bad. • Downloaded clips do NOT contain timestamps. The old Nest software would add, as subtitles, a timestamp. This extraordinarily useful feature no longer exists. The camera itself is fine, no complaints. But the software experience is vastly inferior to the previous version. The new Google Home app, which you must use, vs the old Nest app, is simply not very good. The good news is that this is a software issue, so can be fixed without needing a new camera. The bad news is that there's no reason to think it WILL be fixed. If the software is ever upgraded to be on par with the old Nest software, then this is a 5-star camera.

Hey there, Rawdog. Thanks for writing us feedback about the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). We hear your concern about its app integration. We understand that longtime Nest users enjoy viewing their Nest camera/doorbell feeds from the Nest app. However, our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. We’re working on bringing full functionality to the Home app as we want to create an integrated experience with other Nest and smart home devices. And while the new Nest cameras and doorbells are exclusive to the Google Home app, users with previous versions of Nest cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cams. Meanwhile, we suggest having the latest version of the Google Home app that may improve camera playback controls to make it easier to play, pause, and navigate between events from the camera history view for cameras set up in the Google Home app.

If you need guidance with using the camera effectively in the Home app, please feel free to let us know and we’ll gladly help: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest
