The Nest would have been an easy installation if it weren't for the previous owners to wire the old thermostat incorrectly. I had called Nest customer service and the person I spoke to was very thorough and helpful in helping me wire the nest thermostat.

Did I need this? No. But I wanted it. Works great, but I suspect the “learning thing” is more hype than real function. The main benefit over the programable unit that I replaced is that I can control from anywhere via cell or WiFi.
