    Terrible - RMAs every unit!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Allow me to regale you with the saga of my ongoing tryst with the Google Nest—an experience that can only be described as a comedy of errors, though not the kind one willingly signs up for. In the span of four months, I've exchanged pleasantries with the Google Nest team no fewer than four times through the RMA process. Alas, the recurring protagonist of this tale is an error code that appears to be as persistent as it is unyielding, steadfastly refusing to yield to my earnest attempts at resolution. The primary function of any technological device, especially one graced with the Google moniker, is to seamlessly connect to WiFi. Regrettably, this Nest seems to have enrolled in the School of Selective Connectivity, demonstrating a penchant for obstinacy that rivals the most intransigent of algorithms. Troubleshooting has become an unwelcome pastime, eclipsing the actual utility of the device. In my quest for a harmonious relationship between the Nest and my router, I have traversed the labyrinth of customer support, diligently following each prescribed step in vain. One might be forgiven for assuming that this device, in its sheer audacity, harbors a disdain for the very concept of a wireless connection. In the realm of smart home technology, where reliability is paramount, this Google Nest has managed to distinguish itself—not for its prowess, but for its uncanny ability to elude the embrace of WiFi. It's as if the device has chosen a path of technological asceticism, abstaining from the digital communion it was designed to facilitate. If only the Nest were as adept at fostering connections as it is at generating error codes, we might find ourselves in a state of technological bliss. Alas, the reality is one of perpetual frustration, prompting me to consider alternative means of communication—perhaps carrier pigeons or smoke signals would prove more dependable. In conclusion, the Google Nest, with its error-ridden escapades, has earned a dubious position on the roster of ill-fated purchases. Here's to hoping that future iterations will be more inclined towards harmonious cohabitation with WiFi networks, sparing others the exasperation that has defined my own journey.

    Short Cycling

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Since I've bought this in 2023, I've had to execute warranty two times. -2 new display heads, and now I have a broken base which is short cycling my AC. This is a massive design flaw. The voltage flickers to the AC after switching from heat to cool. Google stopped providing these bases. Two choices here are - find a used one on EBay or dump it in the garbage. I'll choose the latter. DO NOT BUY this on clearance, parts are limited when you will inevitably need to repair it very soon. Google dropped the ball when purchasing Nest. I won't buy another Google product ever again.

We have purchased 2 of these and both failed, their warranty replacement failed and we had to purchase 2 new ones. Both of those had to be replaced and both have failed. Not one of the 8 total have not lasted a full calendar year. Google has sent us replacements until the original warranty runs out then they tell us we have to buy a new one. I will no longer be purchasing these thermostats. The hard ware keeps failing.

    Google messed up Nest

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have 3 Nest thermostats from a couple year ago and November 2021 I purchased a 4th which is now Google. Horrible setup, took me over an hour, no instructions (had to go online to find), messed up menus are confusing, forces customer to use tracking apps, and the scheduling flexibility is gone (used to be able to pick on/off times and temps anytime on any day. Now you get sleep or two others which don’t match everyone’s life patterns. I’ve yet to figure out the ad-how control which was one push on the original Nest devices. Horrible user controls. It was such a nice interface until Google messed them up. If it were not because I have 3 other Nests I would send back this trashy expensive device. Don’t buy unless you like being frustrated and less than satisfied.

Nice Hardware, horrible apps. Apple users beware.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This was a nice product until google bought nest. App is clunky and theres no home kit with iOS. No quick actions, no favorites, have to manually click into the thermostat every time you want to adjust the temp. Easier to just walk up and change the temp manually which removes the features/benefits that make this better than a traditional thermostat. Doesnt work well with the temp sensors you can buy for $100 for 3 areas. Wish I could just return it and get my money back but its outside the return window. If you own an apple device AVOID this as google UX is horrible. They addeded features for androids but failed to add them to the iOS app.

    Dead on arrival.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Got a nest for Christmas. Just got home from Christmas travels hours from this post and installed the nest. Unit is compatible. I checked multiple sources including the wizard on Nest that facilitates that process and the compatibility was no surprise as my heating/cooling systems are not unique - standard and common units. Upon installation of the nest the unit did not boot. No green blinking light, no red light, nothing. Just a dead unit. Uninstalled the Nest and reinstalled my old thermostat. The old thermostat is working perfectly again. Just like it did before I uninstalled. It. Maybe it works for other folks but between installation, trouble-shooting, and re-installation of the old thermostat. I am now hours into tinkering with a dead Nest. Plus I am now going to spend more of my time taking this thing back to best buy. Don't know about you but I don't have hours in my day. Like everyone, we are busy and this ate up a large chunk of time. I don't have anymore time to waste. Not taking it back for a replacement. Taking it back to get rid of this thing. If you are super busy with work and family responsibilities like me, I would recommend you avoid this product as you could spend time you don't have trying to get someone else's product to work.

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've experienced when installing the Nest in your home. It's possible that there may have been a wire connected to the base that isn't connected to the control board which could prevent the screen from activating. It's also possible that the Nest may have been activated in the packaging causing the Nest battery to die before installation which could be resolved by plugging the display into a micro USB cable for 30 minutes.

Feel free to reach out to us through Social Media if you'd like us to look over this with you before sending it back.

Being able to adjust the temperatuere anywhere is awesome. However, after only 3 years the unit stopped connecting to my WiFi (which is the Google WiFi system.) Restarted, reset, removed from app then added back, nothing fixed it. For this price I expect a better life from this product and this is completely unacceptable quality.

    DANGEROUS

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The learning system in this thermostst is atrocious and even though it says it lets you “disable” it it does not actually disable it. My first thermostat decided to keep my house heated to 79 degrees, with no consent from me in the app or settings. The second one has decided to set my house to cool to 55 degrees at 4 am every night. These temperatures arent just uncomfortable, theyre bordering danger. Additionally, the wifi app controls work less than 10% of the time. Truly an awful product, i could not be more disappointed. Buy literally anything else, even a 20 dollar themostat.

Worked great for 3 years and then the wifi module went out and it will no longer connect to the network. Contacted support after resetting and troubleshooting. Google will not stand by the product and only has a 2 year warranty. This is a known problem when searching the internet for solutions. Disappointing that after spending over $200 it breaks just out of the warranty period. Will not purchase a nest device again.

    Constant issues, no company support

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this thermostat precisely two years ago; I was never able to connect it to WiFi. About a week ago, the thermostat died completely - it will not charge while it is on the wall. I've been having to take it off the wall, charge it with a USB for 8 hours, then can return it to the wall. It is precisely 3 months out of warranty, and yet Google will do nothing. Not only did they make me go through a painful 2 hour troubleshooting session (despite doing most of the steps myself previously), they did not even offer a discount for a replacement. Unless you think this thermostat is worth $125/year, stay far away.

Hi caremedy, we hear you and thanks for letting us know that your Nest Learning Thermostat isn’t maintaining a charge while it’s on the wall. We’d like to help.

Nest thermostats power issues may occur when your system wires can't deliver enough power to keep the thermostats charged up. As a result, they start draining the batteries and disconnect from your Wi-Fi and sometimes. Poor Wi-Fi connectivity can also cause the battery to drain faster. Your Nest thermostat uses the voltage from your system’s wires to keep its internal battery charged. If the power to your system is switched off or there’s a blackout, the battery has enough capacity to keep working for a while but will eventually run out. Your thermostat will also turn off features like Wi-Fi to preserve battery life before it must turn off completely.

We understand it can sometimes be difficult to deal with this kind of issue. We’d like to have another opportunity and figure out a way that may help improve your experience if you can contact us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

I followed all set up instructions including the compatibility instructions for it to cause my a/c not to work. I can not access the nest.com site for support due to it being down and that includes the app. I called and was on hold for 25 minutes for the guy to tell me their network issues would not be resolved for a couple of hours and to hang up mid way through the call. His first question was, “Did the a/c unit work prior to installing the thermostat?” Seriously? If my A/C didn’t work prior I would be spending money to fix that, not on this useless product. Now I’m back on hold hoping I don’t get hung up on again while my 3 kids, dog and cat live in a house that is 83 degrees and rising. Thank you Nest.

Your better off with a standard thermostat. This stupid thing makes my house too cold or too hot. I set the heating to 67 degrees, it won’t turn on until 65 degrees (its freaking cold) then when it finally turns on it heats to 69 degrees (Waaay too freaking hot to sleep it wakes us up) so I’m constantly turning the temperature up and down when it’s supposed to be doing it for you. It sucks dont buy it, I’ve had this too long to return it. Now I’m stuck with this expensive p0s thermostat.
