I believe most wifi thermostats need this, but they don't advertise this fact bc it may prevent people from buying their products. I have no electrical/HVAC experience but was able to install a Common Wire from the AC to the thermostat after a few hours (MAKE SURE YOUR POWER IS OFF WHEN MESSING WITH ANYTHING ELECTRICAL). My Nest stopped working after a month UNTIL I installed this wire. Overall very satisfied.

Posted .Hi there KIKI, thanks for letting us know about the issue you are having with the Nest Learning Thermostat and your heating system. A code E74 indicates a no power problem from the power wire (Rh) of your heating system.
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try out to see if it might be helpful with the issue:
- Ensure that your heating system is fully compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostat by using the Compatibility Checker tool here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246656
- Make sure the power to your system is on. The power switch will usually be in your breaker box or fuse box, but in some homes it will look like a light switch near the heating or cooling equipment.
- Check that the wires from your heating system are inserted correctly in the thermostat.
- If you’ve completed all the troubleshooting steps above and your thermostat still isn’t working correctly, we recommend contacting a Nest certified Pro technician for more help.

Although nest claoims you don't need it, mine did not work without one. If you dont have one you can buy a 24 volt transformer wall plug to substitute the common wire.

Replaced a old Honeywell non programmable thermostat. Love the features and the wireless connectivity through the Mobile app. Easy to check the history along with the monthly report they send. This thermostat has saved me money already and will pay itself off. So easy to install and it blows my mind how intuitive this thermostat is. I love being able to control my temperature when I am not at home. Highly recommend.
