Even better than 2nd Gen - The best of the best

I had a two second gen Nest Thermostats which were awesome but these are even better. Bigger screen and brighter and more capabilities plus the White (Home Depot carries white) bezel is awesome and blends with my wall colors. Do it!

Very unhappy-backplate died right as warranty did

We've owned two of these thermostats and they seemed to be pretty good products... Until one night, the main thermostat showed an E103 error code on Y1, which was to kick on the air conditioning. Thankfully, it was a cooler night and the house only got to about 78 degrees. The HVAC guy came out and we did some troubleshooting, and it ended up being a bad backplate. I swapped the backplate from the other thermostat I had and things started working again. I had no idea about how long my warranty was good for, but after talking to support, I was a few months out of warranty and they would do absolutely nothing to help. No prorated discount, no nothing. If this keeps up, I'm moving to ecobee.

    Not a very “smart” thermostat

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I’ve had my Nest thermostat for over a year and was SHOCKED to find my energy costs going UP and increased maintenance required on my Lennox Furnace system. I spent so much money on this system because I thought it was “smart,” but honestly it’s got some of the dumbest, unintuitive features and settings. I started paying more attention to why my furnace was working so hard and found out it was short-cycling. Meaning that even though I have my furnace on a schedule, the heat clicks on throughout the day for about 1 minute, shuts off for 2-3 min, then turns BACK on for another min, and so on. (The schedule I have set is supposed to heat to 68 degrees at 9 am then drops to a set temperature of 62 degrees during the day, then heats back to 68 degrees at 6 pm and drops to a set temperature of 62 degrees overnight - sidenote: if you choose to set a temperature schedule through the nest, you can’t set a different temperature on the schedule within an hour of the initial set temperature, otherwise I would have my house heat to 68 at 9 am and then drop to 62 at 9:30 am, but no, the earliest I can set the next, lower temperature, is 10 am, a full hour after the house heats and has been maintaining the initial set temperature, so dumb!) After I realized my system was short-cycling due to the nest thermostat, I spent hours searching through convoluted “help” articles from Nest. This is how I found out that the thermostat is constantly trying to heat the house and keep it set to the TENTH OF A DEGREE. Meaning that if I set my thermostat to heat to 68 degrees, the thermostat will assign a temperature of 68.6 degrees Fahrenheit. After it heats to that temperature, anytime it drops down to 68.5 degrees Fahrenheit, the whole system clicks on and heats the house back up to 68.6 degrees. Ideally, you’d be able to set the “hysteresis” or a timer on the thermostat (especially on a $200+ thermostat equipment) so that the temperature could be set to something like 72 degrees, heat to that temperature, and then not switch back on to heat the house for a set period of time or until the temperature in the house drops to a certain temperature like 68 degrees. This lack of intuitive settings on the Nest is costing me a FORTUNE between furnace maintenance and increased energy costs (kind of crazy when the Nest is supposed to be so “eco friendly”!) and I’m considering switching back to my $15 Honeywell thermostat which is insane. Until they add this feature to the Nest thermostat, I warn you to steer away from this equipment!

    Google messed up Nest

I have 3 Nest thermostats from a couple year ago and November 2021 I purchased a 4th which is now Google. Horrible setup, took me over an hour, no instructions (had to go online to find), messed up menus are confusing, forces customer to use tracking apps, and the scheduling flexibility is gone (used to be able to pick on/off times and temps anytime on any day. Now you get sleep or two others which don’t match everyone’s life patterns. I’ve yet to figure out the ad-how control which was one push on the original Nest devices. Horrible user controls. It was such a nice interface until Google messed them up. If it were not because I have 3 other Nests I would send back this trashy expensive device. Don’t buy unless you like being frustrated and less than satisfied.

it was a good product but not anymore

I have two nest units at home, one on the first floor, one on the second floor. Both products were good for the first 10 months. After 10 months, they start to offline randomly, particularly when I am trying to control it on my iphone. What was worse, recent update introduced a new feature that can locate your phone to determine the stay & away status. Ever since then, I have been cooked to WELL DONE several times just because I AM HOME with my phone AT HOME but both nest become away for whatever reason I don't know. Me and my wife are both using iphones and we have separate accounts under the family. Both of us were at home! And the NEST are trying to cook us! PLEASE AVOID this product. I started to use nest products since early 2013. It was really good. It helped me to adjust the setting of the AC and saved my energy bill. I hate to say it but ever since it was acquired by Google, it has been going downwards.

    Anything but “smart”!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do not use the Google Nest Thermostat unless you want your utility bills to double! I leave the thermostat set at 72 year-round. In the summer, Google Nest will readjust the temperature to below 70 on its own. In winter it will readjust the temperature to 75 on its own. There is a “lock” option but this only keeps other humans from messing with it - it doesn’t stop the thermostat itself! The ONLY way I can get the thermostat to stop doing this is to turn the air or heat OFF which isn’t a good option when it’s an extreme temperature outside. This thing is not “smart” in the least and has not helped us “save money” on our utility bills at all, it has only driven the bills up. So stick with your current “stupid” thermostat as at least it will follow your instructions and stay at the temperature you set it!

Hey there, AnneK420. We hear your concerns on needing to keep your Nest Learning Thermostat at a specific temperature. Here’s a few things to try so you can get the most out of your device:

First, turn off Auto-Scheduling learning: When you turn off Auto-Schedule, your existing schedule will remain but your thermostat will stop learning from your future adjustments.

Second, turn off Automatic switching with presence sensing: If you've enabled Home and Away routines or Home/Away Assist, your thermostat might still switch to its Eco Temperatures automatically when it senses that everybody has left the home. If you don't want it to do that, disable Eco Temperature auto-switching for your thermostat.

      Here’s a guide with more details: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9209007?hl=en-GB&ref_topic=9361874&sjid=16868515096229767063-NC

We have purchased 2 of these and both failed, their warranty replacement failed and we had to purchase 2 new ones. Both of those had to be replaced and both have failed. Not one of the 8 total have not lasted a full calendar year. Google has sent us replacements until the original warranty runs out then they tell us we have to buy a new one. I will no longer be purchasing these thermostats. The hard ware keeps failing.

Unreliable after a few years (both failed)

I bought two of these for my home (downstairs and upstairs). Within 2yrs the first one disconnected from Wifi and wouldn't connect. It's a known issue with the Wifi chip apparently. Google replaced it. Yesterday (a year or two after the first was replaced), the upstairs thermostat no longer connected to Wifi. I contacted tech support after going through the normal troubleshooting and I figured it was the Wifi chip and would need to be replaced. It still remembered the programming that I had manually scheduled and let the tech know that after so many years I couldn't find the receipt. He assured me that using the serial number they could look it up and asked me for it. I had sent all the tech info before I chatted with this tech so I sent it again. He had me go through the same stuff I had already done and told me there was one more step that needed to be done and that was to factory reset it. I let him know that I didn't want to lose my programming and he insisted that I had to do it. I let him know this wouldn't fix the problem and again he insisted..... so I did and lost all my programming. The tech then let me know that my warranty expired several years ago and I could use it manually now that I lost all the programming. I cannot believe the unprofessionalism from the technician and have pulled both Nest thermostats from my home and thrown them away. Absolutely flabbergasted by how I was treated for a known issue with the Wifi chips in these.

    Do not buy

I am a very informed consumer. Before I purchase any item for my home, I thoroughly researche it. When I purchased two Google nest thermostats from Amazon, I had the intention of being able to control the temperature at my home while I was away. Google has been a trusted company to me up to this point. I hired a professional HVAC technician to install the device. The units that provided were faulty. I have a zone system and they fried my circuit board. I have spent literally hours on the phone with Google support with no satisfaction or solution. They will not help me with the issue and I am stuck with two malfunctioning Google nest thermostats. And I had to pay for the HVAC technician and to replace Circuit board so that I would have heat. All of this occurred in the middle of a Wisconsin winter. The amount of red tape that Google was having me go through, was ridiculous. They transferred me, they would say that a supervisor would call which they never did, I have yet to reach a resolution on this issue. Do not buy this product

    Short Cycling

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Since I've bought this in 2023, I've had to execute warranty two times. -2 new display heads, and now I have a broken base which is short cycling my AC. This is a massive design flaw. The voltage flickers to the AC after switching from heat to cool. Google stopped providing these bases. Two choices here are - find a used one on EBay or dump it in the garbage. I'll choose the latter. DO NOT BUY this on clearance, parts are limited when you will inevitably need to repair it very soon. Google dropped the ball when purchasing Nest. I won't buy another Google product ever again.

Hello there, MM17. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Nest Learning Thermostat. It’s unfortunate to hear about the frustration you've encountered with connectivity and battery issues.

Here are some steps we recommend to address the concerns you've raised:

      For connectivity Issues:
      - Restart your router and thermostat. This can often resolve temporary connection problems.
      - Check for network interference. Move your router and thermostat away from other wireless devices that might be causing interference, like cordless phones or baby monitors.
      - Ensure you have the latest software. Both the thermostat and your phone's app should be updated to the latest versions.

      For sensor disconnection:
      - Re-pair the sensors with your thermostat. Follow the instructions in the user guide to re-establish the connection.
      - Check sensor batteries. Ensure the batteries in your sensors are fresh and properly installed.

We also hear your feedback about the inability to remotely restart the thermostat and the recommended device replacement for a low battery. We are actively working on improving our products and appreciate your suggestions for further development. And if the above steps don't resolve the issues, please feel free to contact our customer support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

Google fan boy but I now detest Nest

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've had a Nest 3rd generation for about 18 months. Early, during that time, I decided to take it off of auto-schedule because it created some bizarre schedules on it's own. The end result of this was that it was no smarter than a $60-$90 smart thermostat, it just cost more. After 18 months it decided that it would not follow it's schedule. It would go into Econ mode, during the week when I left for work, and would not come out of that mode until it detected motion inside the house. The programming was for it to cool or heat 30 minutes before I got home. I had 6 phone calls with Nest support. The first 3 were with level 1 support. The latter 3 with level 2 support. The first 3 were about an hour each. The second 3 were about 2 hours each. I was given homework of resetting, reprogramming, and rebooting. Then Nest sent me a replacement and I was tasked with removing the old one, and removing it from the account, and replacing, setup, and reprogramming, as well as mailing the old one back to Nest. I have about 12-13 hours investing in troubleshooting this labor saving device. I've asked Nest for either a fix or refund, and they cut contact with me, on Case number 03923464.

    Dead on arrival.

Got a nest for Christmas. Just got home from Christmas travels hours from this post and installed the nest. Unit is compatible. I checked multiple sources including the wizard on Nest that facilitates that process and the compatibility was no surprise as my heating/cooling systems are not unique - standard and common units. Upon installation of the nest the unit did not boot. No green blinking light, no red light, nothing. Just a dead unit. Uninstalled the Nest and reinstalled my old thermostat. The old thermostat is working perfectly again. Just like it did before I uninstalled. It. Maybe it works for other folks but between installation, trouble-shooting, and re-installation of the old thermostat. I am now hours into tinkering with a dead Nest. Plus I am now going to spend more of my time taking this thing back to best buy. Don't know about you but I don't have hours in my day. Like everyone, we are busy and this ate up a large chunk of time. I don't have anymore time to waste. Not taking it back for a replacement. Taking it back to get rid of this thing. If you are super busy with work and family responsibilities like me, I would recommend you avoid this product as you could spend time you don't have trying to get someone else's product to work.

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've experienced when installing the Nest in your home. It's possible that there may have been a wire connected to the base that isn't connected to the control board which could prevent the screen from activating. It's also possible that the Nest may have been activated in the packaging causing the Nest battery to die before installation which could be resolved by plugging the display into a micro USB cable for 30 minutes.

Feel free to reach out to us through Social Media if you'd like us to look over this with you before sending it back.
