We can have a little smoke in the kitchen and it will talk to us and state, "heads up, there is smoke on the main floor". If it continues to detect it, it will send a message to the other 2 and state the alarm will be going off. You can shut it off and when it does not detect any more smoke, even after it was shut off, the device will state the warning has ended. Our other smoke detector did not even pick up the smoke.

I was fast asleep and at 1:00 AM it detected smoke from a log that rolled out of the fireplace. None of the other regular smoke alarms in the house went off, but the Nest smoke alarm...which wasn't even in the same room....came on with a smoke warning. It wasn't an annoying alarm but rather a smoke warning in a booming announcement that is very loud. I'm a deep sleeper and it woke me right up from across the house.
