It’s outside my bathroom door but not right outside. Apparently the cheap one that I replaced this with doesn’t have that problem. I’m going to have to figure out how to relocate. Would be grateful if they could figure out a way to disable the monitor and mf-ing beeps without having to remove the batteries. Tried using app but that’s not a possibility. Also terribly disappointed that my downstairs monitor went off too late when an actual fire started on my stovetop. I started to smell something funny while in my living room and then walked into the kitchen and saw my oven mitts were on fire on the stovetop. Quickly put it out and then that’s when the monitor went off. Right outside my kitchen and yet it would not have gone off until things most likely would have been really bad.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Nest Protect. We’re really sorry to know that one of your Nest Protect is sounding an unexpected alarm due to the shower steam while the other triggered an alarm too late during a critical event. This is something we do not take lightly.
Steam can trigger unexpected alarms in many smoke alarms. Common household sources of steam include showers and humidifiers. To help lower the number of unexpected alarms caused by steam, Nest developed Steam Check. Steam Check helps Nest Protect tell the difference between steam-related events and real fire or smoke events. While Steam Check helps Nest Protect distinguish between steam and smoke, it won't stop all steam-related alarms. If Nest Protect observes steam that appears similar to real smoke or fire, the alarm will sound. The best way to eliminate steam-related unexpected alarms completely is to move Nest Protect away from sources of steam like bathrooms and home humidifiers.
Steam Check is on by default, but you can enable or disable Steam Check with the Nest app or on the Web at any time. Select the Nest Protect that you want to change, go to Settings then select Nest Sense and turn Steam Check on or off. Once complete, it can take up to 24 hours for the settings on your Nest Protect to be updated.
Regarding your downstairs Nest Protect, a good reason why it went off late is that the smoke chamber may have excessive dust in it. You may want to clean it by simply wiping the outside of your Nest Protect with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

Expensive, but worth the piece of mind

Have a couple of nice feature like path light at night and constantly testing themselves. They integrate well with the rest of the Nest products.

We havent had a fire to put it to the test.

It gives us a level of comfort with the pets being at home alone if something were to go wrong. We had a “accidental test” of the system and it worked GREAT! Definitely recommend.

We have tried other talking smoke alarms but they were not loud enough. When I heard this one is connected to your smart phone and goes off when there is an alert, makes it that much better since he can hear his phone going off, especially when he is asleep! Defiantly will be getting more of these in the future!

A good fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector on their own would cost about the same. It's a bonus that it's a smart detector and that it communicates to others in the house and the Nest thermostat. Great quality and price!

My old smoke det went out and didn't like that I had to plug in my CM detector. Mounted on side wall and looks great. Plan to buy a couple more for the home.

I like the path light feature for some light at night when it detects motion. Also setup was super easy since it can use my other nest products to assist with that.
