The wait for 2nd gen has paid off!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was always very interested in the original Nest Protect. I always loved the idea, but didn't feel the cost was justified given the negative reviews and early issues. Although they have been able to gradually improve the Nest Protect through software updates, I figured if I was patient enough, I could wait until they released a whole new hardware refresh. I'm glad I waited! Compared to the Nest Protect 1st gen, this one has an improved smoke chamber (fewer false alarms), smaller physical footprint, App Silence feature (silence alarm through app via Bluetooth), and other hardware improvements that extend the stated lifespan to ten years (up from seven)! All very good improvements. But does it work? Well, my house hasn't done the ultimate test of becoming engulfed in flames yet, but I did do some basic false alarm testing. Steam from a nearby bathroom, and light smoke from a candle, both failed to trip the alarm. So it seems their claims of fewer false alarms are true thus far. *Setup* Getting this set up was very easy. You can really tell they put a lot of work into the presentation and setup. The box is easy to open, and very welcoming with its simplistic and well-designed instructions. Everything in the manual is accompanied by very good pictures to help you along the way. Basically, the steps are: 1) Download app (Android and iOS compatible) and create a free account 2) Open Nest Protect box and remove hardware 3) With app ready to pair device, pull plastic tab from Nest Protect unit to power it on 4) Unit goes through some brief testing where you will be left with absolutely no doubt the alarm works (LOUD!) 5) Unit will pair with your phone so you can enter in wifi network info, after which it will connect to wifi 6) Remove old smoke detector and mounting plate 7) Disconnect old smoke detector wires and reconnect new wires included with Nest Protect 8) Screw in Newst Protect mounting plate and snap in other end of new wires to unit 9) Twist in unit to new mounting plate 10) Finish with another test and make final configuration changes via app. Done! This was the first time I had ever replaced a smoke detector, and I found it very easy. *Mobile App* The app is very well-designed and works well on both my phone and tablet. It also integrates with a ton of other home automation gadgets, which is really cool (Nest Thermostat obviously, Philips Hue bulbs, Skydrop sprinkler controller, and many others). Here's some of the things you can do from the app: - Change mode between Home and Away (not really relevant to CO detector, but good for other devices) - Iniitiate Nest Protect sound test, checkup - Silence alarm - Change Protect location (family room, bedroom, etc, for accurate communication) - Adjust Nest Sense: - - Toggle Pathlight to light your way when you are under Protect at night - - Nightly Promise (Unit self-tests and gives green "OK" light each night) - - Steam Check (reduce false alarms on steam, good for units near bathrooms) - - Heads Up (less loud & annoying pre-alarm warning when rising CO levels detected) - Adjust unit LED brightness (low, medium, high) - Change language (English, English (UK), Spanish, French, French (CA), Netherlands) - View unit status (model, serial, software version, battery status, replace date, last update time, wifi MAC/IP addresses) - Add/remove devices to your account - What To Do (advice on preparing for CO/fire alerts) - Device History (logs on alarms and updates) So overall, the Nest Protect is an expertly-designed device and I love it so far. It has everything I could expect from a smoke/CO detector. Although it would be awesome if it could double as a wireless access point or security camera! I will definitely update this as I get more time with my Nest Protect 2nd gen units, especially if I get false positives, or actual positives. But so far I am loving my Nest Protect.

Expensive But Worth It
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Of course you know this, these are expensive compared to all the other combo smoke / carbon monoxide detectors around. They are worth every penny. They talk to you - tell you which room has a problem. They don't just blindly beep or scream, they calmly tell you there is a problem. Eventually they do beep loudly, but warn you first. They look beautiful - way better than anything on the market (way better than the non wi-fi versions). They are similar looking to the First Alert Onelink - however, I have owned a Onelink. They do not function anywhere nearly as well, are far harder to set up, and their support is not nearly as good. If you have a Nest thermostat, there is just no reason to buy anything else. It works seamlessly with that system. Setup is pretty easy - I set up 5 of these in about 10 minutes. Before you go to the store, check to make sure you have an electrical box if you are replacing existing detectors. By code your existing wired detectors will be on a single dedicated circuit. There might be other live wires in the box that pass through (use a live wire checker to be certain there is no electricity in the box). And there will likely be a red wire in the box to connect the old detectors together - you won't need that wire, cap it off. The included hardware works just fine over an electrical box. It isn't great, just don't tighten the screws too tight - you'll strip through the recessed screw hole. No electrical box - buy a battery version. They all last about 10 years. These all use lithium ion disposable AA batteries. The bonus, path lighting works nicely in a very dark hallway. Not so great in a bedroom if you are a very light sleeper. The lighting can be turned off with the app.

Finally a way to easily silence an alarm
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love the nest smoke and carbon monoxide detector. It's easy to setup and install. Love the nightlight feature. The ease of silencing a false alarm via your smart phone, especially at night, is worth its weight in gold. I've been waiting for a false alarm but it doesn't seem to do it like those old models. It lets you know when you turn out the lights that the alarm is in good working order with enough backup battery to make it through the night..genius! Go nest! Bring on more great products.

Excellent Quality/Features - Easy Installation
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pricy compared to the competition, but worth it. Check out the features. Most important to me was the ability to monitor operating condition, battery life and silence false alarms (of which I have had ZERO in the first month of use) from my iPhone. very easy to install and connect to network/iPhone. Installation would have been even easier if Nest were to provide common connectors to adapt their connector to legacy connections (rather than having to use the wire nits included) – very small quibble.

No 3am wake up for low batteries!!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not the first time I have purchased these as I have installed them in two homes now (previous home install was about 3 years ago with a total of 6 units; current home installed a total of 9 in about 2 hours). They are easy to install using existing wiring in your house to your current smoke detectors. The night light feature is perfect for setting up in your hallways or areas of your house that could use them (not recommended for bedrooms though). Monthly automated tests are great too with updates directly to your phone are nice, but make sure that you have everyone's phone setup to your Nest account so that it will know when there is no one in the house to perform the test (my son freaked out one day because they all started beeping and I forgot to setup his phone). Finally, the best option is that you will not be woken up at 3am by that annoying little beep that all smoke detectors have leaving you to wander around your house with a broom trying to figure out which one you need to knock off the ceiling so you can go back to sleep!! The on phone notification of your batteries getting low is by far the best feature. Yeah, they are a bit on the expensive side, but I really enjoy my sleep!!

An expensive but elegant and technical solution
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My wife was dismayed at the prospect of spending a $100 on a dual carbon/smoke detector, since generally we get these for about $20 a pop for our rental units and since I wanted to install 5 of them, well it was a pricey project but one I feel was worth the cost. First, this unit has the same 10 year life span as the cheaper units we use; however, this Nest can detect both fast and slow burning fires, and a nifty little feature which I'll touch on later is the night light. Installation is simple and the Nest comes with a wiring diagram, screws, wire nuts, and an easy to follow networking guide if you're planning to install it to your network. I paired all 5 of the Nests to various rooms, hallways, and downstairs areas to my wife's and my phone. Labeling and identifying each one was a breeze. One of the unexpected features and one that both my wife and i have come to love and appreciate has been the nightlight. When the Nest detects movement at night a soft white ring glows which is enough to light up the hallway in a very soft glow. My son has night terrors and sleep walks and will sometimes wake up in the hallway and he used to get scared since it was so dark. The night lights we used to use were harsh and too bright; however, the nest is very soft and gentle and much to our delight our son doesn't get freaked out walking down the hallway at night any more. Overall it is an excellent product, albeit somewhat pricey, but one I do recommend especially if you're working on automating your home.

Excellent device but very pricy
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is easy to install. It works as advertised. It is not as ugly as others. It connects nicely with my IOS in the Nest app. The advertised features are useful. I like the blue night light feature which is triggered at night when someone walks below the device. The history feature is very helpful. The alarm is loud enough and the notification feature is excellent. Ironically, I hope this device is never used in my house to notify me of a real incident. I am concerned that I have not been able to add this device to my IOS Google Home. In reviewing various posts on the Internet, it seems that multiple folks have complained or asked questions about integration with Google Home. I am also concerned that the device, though great, is very pricy. There are other feature laden, effective and excellent devices on the market that are not as pricy.

Excellent Smoke Alarm
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These were additions to two other Nest smoke alarms I already had in my hour. I've now replaced all of my traditional smoke alarms with Nest Alarms. I like knowing these can alert me to issues when I'm not around, and the fact that they are more intelligent than simple smoke alarms. So far, they've been excellent. The first two have been operating for about 12 months. I get monthly reports and they all perform a monthly chime test. One of the things I really like is the nightlight - I have that feature turned on for the ones in hallways, stairs, etc., so when you stumble out of the bedroom at night to use the bathroom, they automatically glow to light the way just enough. The newest ones I just added no longer have the Nest logo in the center - Google has now officially assimilated them into their collective. They are expensive, but I like having some piece of mind that I can actually check the status of them anytime from my phone, and that they can alert me when away from home.

Easy install / Easy setup
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed to replace my old hardwired smoke detectors and was thrilled with this high-tech option. The setups and installations went smoothly (Yes, you should set them up before the install). Had to call support to see if the units needed to be grounded, which they don't. The whole experience from setup, support, and installation showed that someone had taken the time to make sure that this was a well designed experience and product. Love the Ad-hock network and access from my mobile devices. Nothing for Alexa to control and the device is not voice interactive, but who wants to converse with a smoke detector? So one question: Is it worth spending $120 on a smart smoke / carbon dioxide detector when a standard smoke detector runs $14? So far it is. It isn't just the dual detection or the smart home integration. It isn't even the smart nightlight features, automatic self-testing, or even the app. Having the remote insight and knowledge that my family is safe is worth the money. What is your peace of mind worth?

Nice and easy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. They are expensive! However they will last for 10+ years 10 years is the recommended replacement time. The set up was very easy just follow the basic instructions the installation was also extremely easy weather wired or battery operated. They work in conjunction with each other the nightlight is a wonderful feature especially in the hallways in dark locations in your home. Also it’s nice to be able to turn off the night like future if it’s in your bedroom because it will since movement and turn itself on. I love the fact that it speaks to you before it sets off an alarm giving you Time to locate or find the false alarm. I love the fact that it tests itself once a month and it’s not allowed test to simple beep that it will transfer to each unit in your home I have six of them

Great household detector
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My kidde alarm broke after 4 1/2 years, would set itself off randomly in the middle of the night and wake my small children who were scared of the noises. We called to have the house checked for CO, all readings were negative. Found it was a bad alarm, replaced with the Nest. Works perfectly. I like that it does monthly self tests and reports back to the app. The nightlight feature is great for my 4 year old who gets up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It's been installed for a month now and so far so good, no false alarms. Easy to install, the directions make sense and are easy to read through.

Best Fire Alarm
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best fire alarm you can get for the $$! Little pricey. But extra features like acces from app on phone and night light setting are awesome! Works great! Very high end looking product. Works great with nest thermostat.

Yes!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love how low batteries don’t chirp at me in the middle of the night or sirens go off during false alarms. It talks to you, and you can test it from your phone vs having to get a ladder and physically test each one individually. You can silence it with your phone vs. trying to waive it down with a towel or newspaper. If something is wrong, you can figure out which one it is vs. going around the house trying to figure out which one is chirping at you. Another great feature is you can program it to your nest thermostat, and if it detects carbon monoxide, your heater will shut off to prevent further carbon monoxide from coming out

Important Tech Upgrade
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Compared to most smoke detectors that you never notice (if you are lucky) until the battery goes dead and you wander around at 3:00 in the morning wondering which one has a dead battery...THE NEST smoke detectors monitor battery usage all the time and alert you in plenty of time. They also have a nice low level night light that guides the path so I don't need to switch on hall lights. I also was able to trash the carbon monoxide detector...which also had its own battery issues. I love the app that tells how they are performing, and the connection with the NEST thermostat is amazing.

Love my nest devices!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was pretty easy to install. I was replacing a previous wired smoke detector, and by following the instructions that come included with the nest protect I had this done in about 10-15 minutes. Using the Nest app on my iphone I easily paired it to my WiFi and configured everything without a problem. I wish they weren't as expensive as it will cost a small fortune to replace every smoke detector I have, but I do like the functionality. Also, I realized when installing this that they have 10 year expiration dates at which point you have to replace them. So every 10 years you have to pay another $100 to replace it! This is why I wish they were priced less.

Seamless
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very straight forward install process. This replaced two connected older smoke detectors. These will also be connected to one another if hazard detected with one device all devices will audibly notify. Looks sleek and sturdy. You will be able to silence from device or app, there is a hard setting that if the hazard saturation is too high you can’t silence until it’s dissipated, which doesn’t sound good if you’ve got a handle on things but protects against bad actors. If you have a nest thermostat, this product, when enabled will turn off air circulation until you physically turn it back on and alarm can be silenced. Quite a quality product.

It does a good job at what it's advertised to do.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I pulled a light fixture to wire this in, quick and easy install. I was pleasantly surprised to find a night-light feature illuminates when you walk in the room at night. It's not much, but it helps. Currently its only compatible with the nest app, it doesn't show on Google Home. Support is on the road map but no ETA. For the price I wish the door bell would ring through it or I could cast music, but it is advertised as a smoke/co2 detector and it does that job well.

Must have for any home
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My wife and I just moved into our first house, which uses gas for various appliances and the fireplace. We have two dogs, so we were very worried about making sure nothing happened while we were not at home. The Nest Protect gives us great peace of mind knowing that if something does happen, we will be notified immediately. It was extremely easy to install, setup, and it looks great! The night light feature works great at coming on when it senses motion and keeps us from tripping over things. The fact that it integrates with other Nest devices and it has an app is a good bonus.

Everything I want from a smart smoke/CO alarm
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Did you know that after 10 years, a smoke/CO alarm becomes less and less reliable and viable and should be replaced? I didn't. My old Nest Protects did and they told me so. I like that sort of info as opposed to an alarm that just starts beeping for no reason and makes you guess why. My Nest app not only notified me but it gave me an explanation why with valuable information. This is yet one of the reasons I decided to not only stick with the platform and replace them but also to buy an additional unit for the basement. I like how they're all integrated and aware of each other so the alarms all go off but announce where the issue is. I have one hardwired and two battery units; one for each floor. I don't like how they aren't supported in the new Works with Google program but I'm hoping they'll be moved over soon. Until then, they live in the limbo between the Nest app and the Google Home app, but I'll trade that for the moment for the feeling of security I get and the ease of dealing with them. No false alarms, no going off when you burn toast. That included 'night light mode' that not only goes off when you're walking around in the dark but also guides you in case of smoke! One note: if you're still running a 1st gen Protect, be aware that the mounting system and wiring harness have changed. Minor inconvenience, but it's not a direct replacement.
